Serving Others – Going the Extra Mile
Going two miles is a Commandment to do more than what is expected.
Mat 5:41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.
We again see the ways of the Lord, putting the needs of others first and sacrificing our lives, embedded in many Commandments, as it is in the Commandment to “go two miles”.
Php 2:4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.
Php 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
Giving more is giving all of ourselves, as our lives now belong to the Lord, and He has put us into the ministry of the Gospel, being His witnesses.
Mar 10:43 But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister:
Mar 10:44 And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.
Mar 10:45 For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many
The reason the Lord raises shepherds and brings them through the door that is the Commandments is so we become ministers. We receive the gift of God so we, in turn, can minister it to others and thus spread the Gospel, the love of God, to all mankind. We are stewards of God’s grace and cast the living Bread of Life into the waters, knowing it returns to us in due time.
1Pe 4:10 As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
Ecc 11:1 Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days.
Some of the immutable sayings in the Scriptures are “It is more blessed to give than to receive” and “one reaps what we sow”. When we bless others and minister and give to them, it is returned to us as we grow in the grace and knowledge of God.
Pro 11:25 The generous soul will be made rich, And he who waters will also be watered himself.
Luk 6:38 Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”
We bear the burden of our brethren; we help them to carry the cross of Jesus Christ.
Gal 6:1 Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.
Gal 6:2 Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
Mar 15:21 And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross.
We love all men, not just those who love us. We do good to all men and witness as Christ did to all in the world. Loving our neighbor as ourselves is loving the Lord with all of our hearts and minds. The good works we do in ministering to all men are seen as doing them for Christ.
Luk 6:31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.
Luk 6:32 For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them.
Luk 6:33 And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same.
Mat 25:40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
Going two miles does not mean we engage in carnal reasoning and bondage to the sins and unbelief of others. We are serving up spiritual things that help raise and grow children for Christ. Loving God with all our hearts requires us to separate and have no fellowship with the works of darkness. Do not mix up the Commandments to be set apart and touch not the unclean with placating the whims and desires of those bound by their carnal minds.
2Co 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
2Co 6:15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?
2Co 6:17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
We are to redeem the time wisely and not by taken into the snare of those who are outside the faith and fornicate with their father the devil.
Eph 5:11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
