“The Five Visions”

Key Verses:  Amos 7:1 – 7:6

Chapter 7 begins with the Lord showing Amos the first two of five different visions regarding the nation of Israel that is symbolized by Jacob. It is us, God’s people, who will first wrestle with the Lord as we are the first to supplant the man of sin with the Lord from heaven.

Amo 7:1 Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me; and, behold, he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and, lo, it was the latter growth after the king’s mowings.

Amo 7:2 And it came to pass, that when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord GOD, forgive, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.

Amo 7:3 The LORD repented for this: It shall not be, saith the LORD.

Amo 7:4 Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me: and, behold, the Lord GOD called to contend by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and did eat up a part.

Amo 7:5 Then said I, O Lord GOD, cease, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.

Amo 7:6 The LORD repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord GOD.

These prophecies and visions are not to be taken as history lessons. There are admonitions and ensamples (1Co 10:11) for us, the Israel of God, and the true Jews (Rom 2:28, Gal 6:16), which words we shall live by in the appointed time (Mat 4:4). Each of these visions is a vision of judgment for the transgressions of the people. Here is the end of our judgment and what the Lord says after showing all five visions to Amos. This is why judgment is the blessing as it is what redeems us and saves us from our sins.

Amo 9:8 Behold, the eyes of the Lord GOD are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth; saving that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, saith the LORD.

The fact that there are five visions reminds us that the scourging grace of the Lord is what brings salvation. The number five signifies grace through faith as it used in Scripture. Each of Amos’s visions reveal the chastening of the Lord to come, the very experiences that are teaching us righteousness (Heb 12:6, Isa 26:9).

Tit 2:11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,

Tit 2:12 Teaching (i.e. chastening – paideuō) us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;

The Vision of the Grasshoppers:

Amos tells us that it is the Lord Himself, the Potter, who is forming these spiritual grasshoppers. There is a reason “grasshopper” is the word used here and not the word locust. Outwardly in the physical, grasshoppers are very similar, yet different than locusts and the same applies in their spiritual application (Rom 1:20).

Unlike their cousins the locusts, these grasshoppers shoot up in the latter stages of our growth versus the early stages of our being drawn to Christ. The “latter growth” of the grass is a reference to our day of the Lord when we are being made into mature sons of the Lord by judgment.   The biggest differentiator between grasshoppers and locusts in the natural, is how they socialize and move around. Grasshoppers are more solitary, much more finite versus the much more numerous and more gregarious swarming behavior of locusts. Locusts spiritually signify the lies and false doctrines of Babylon in our heavens (mind), that for a time completely cover the earth and blot out all the true light (Exo 10:15). Here is a partial description from Revelation 9 that links these locusts to the father of all lies as Isaiah 9:15 (the false prophet being the tail) confirms.

Rev 9:10 And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months.

Rev 9:11 And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.

Grasshoppers by their very name are linked to the earth and the flesh (Isa 40:6 – all flesh is grass) and speak to the secret or hidden sins that arise with our continued unbelief. Our failure to overcome these sins, leads us to doubt the Word and lean on our own understanding.  The word for grasshopper in Amos 7:1 is “gob” which is H1462 which is found in only one other verse.

Nah 3:17 Thy crowned are as the locusts, and thy captains as the great H1462 grasshoppers H1462, which camp in the hedges in the cold day, but when the sun ariseth they flee away, and their place is not known where they are.

We looked at this verse in Nahum Part 10 – The Great Grasshopper.  Strong’s connects the root word for grasshopper to be H1461 or “goob” that means husbandmen, signifying those that dig in the earth and work in the Lord’s fields. The Elect go forth with great zeal to serve the Lord but we will first be overcome with wine (knowledge) just like a famous husbandman, named Noah whose nakedness was discovered.

Gen 9:20 And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard:

Gen 9:21 And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent.

There is also another prime word for grasshopper and by taking the SUM of the word (Psa 119:160) it helps us understand what grasshoppers represent and the Lord’s purposes in sending them.   The other word for grasshopper is “chagab” or H2284 in Strong’s and is found five times in the bible.

2Ch_7:13

Until we grow in faith, our sins will make us doubt the Lord and even our ability through Him in overcoming the giants in the land.  This is part of the torment (Rev 14:10) we are enduring to learn patience and lose confidence in ourselves and come to our wits end and then cry out for deliverance. After seeing the land, we are given to possess, the men sent to spy out the land spoke of their carnal fears and doubts which the grasshoppers create that bind us in unbelief.

Num 13:33  And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers [H2284], and so we were in their sight.

The grasshoppers are used of the Lord to humble us and destroy the pride of life within us.  Only the meek, the humbled shall inherit the earth and be given dominion over sin (Mat 5:13).  The Lord sends them to devour the strength of the flesh to turn us in repentance.

2Ch 7:13  If I shut up heaven that there be no rain, or if I command the grasshoppers [H2284 – locusts] to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people;

2Ch 7:14  If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

As we mature and are chastened with grace, we eventually are given the strength and the faith to overcome them and they become edible food for the new man.

Lev 11:22 Even these of them ye may eat; the locust after his kind, and the bald locust after his kind, and the beetle after his kind, and the grasshopper [H2284] after his kind.

These appearances of spiritual grasshoppers are the manifestation of our secret sins and idols that come to the light that destroy our pride and humble us. We must be humbled before we can be exalted and this turns us back to our first love. The Lord deals with our sins at the appointed time by bringing fire upon the earth that reveal all things.

Rom 2:16 In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.

Dan 2:22 He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.

Grasshoppers camp out in the hedges (Nah 3:17) we build with lies, doubts and false doctrines on “the cold days”.  These hideouts allow these sins to remain waiting the due time for being exposed.  There are days of spiritual winter when we don’t progress and little fruit is found in our land and we are lukewarm at doing the Words of the Lord. These days are ordained of the Lord and all part of the plan for us to learn good and evil and become like our Lord (Gen 3:22).

Gen 8:22 While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.

When the Sun (Truth, Word) arises, and as the seals on the Word that blinded us are being removed, the grasshoppers go into hiding behind our hypocrisy and self-righteous garments, hiding in the rocks and mountains of Babylon (Rev 6:15-16).  Said another way, secret sins hide behind the leaven of the Pharisees which is our hypocrisy. Saying one thing but thinking and doing something completely different.

Luk 12:1 …. Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

Luk 12:2 For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known.

Unlike false doctrines (locusts), that can be vanquished quickly with Truth, purging our secret faults require us to seek judgment desiring it (Thy kingdom come) with prayer and fasting.

Psa 19:9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.

Psa 19:10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

Psa 19:11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.

Psa 19:12 Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults.

The day will come when the Lord raises up evil within our house in response to our secret sins as the story of David’s sin with Bathsheba shows. Our judgment and our adulterous behavior will be done in the Light of the Sun and shall no more be hidden.

2Sa 12:12 For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.

Isa 28:17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.

Eph 5:13 But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.

The grasshoppers will cut us down to size and devour all of our strength which is a blessing we will look behind and understand in our day of the Lord.

Amo 7:2 And it came to pass, that when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord GOD, forgive, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.

We cannot be strong for the Lord when flesh is strong.  It is only when we are weak in the flesh that we are strong for the Lord and that is the purpose for all the oppression and calamity the Lord sends our way.

2Co 12:10  Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

When the flesh remains strong, our flesh is being put into great distress when the Lord begins tearing down our image of being SELF righteous before Him.

2Ki 19:26 Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded; they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as corn blasted before it be grown up.

This is all by design of our Maker who is purposefully withering our grass and destroying the comfort of the old man.

1Pe 1:24 For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:

1Pe 1:25 But the word of the Lord endureth forever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.

The Lord is going to kill the old man with a famine and remove the food that keeps him and the beast alive. To be saved we must learn to eat strong meat and get beyond herbs and green things. The green grass represents the immature things (mixed multitude within), which only gets us so far. To move on, we have to learn to eat strong meat (Heb 5:14).

Joh 6:53 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.

The Lord uses spiritual moths, worms and even grasshoppers to expose our sin and self-righteousness and eat up our clothing, devouring the crop and destroy our false peace (1Th 5:3). God’s elect are these shameful husbandmen who have wasted the fields and been led of the Lord and allow these grasshoppers to spoil the crop.

Joe 1:11 Be ye ashamed, O ye husbandmen; howl, O ye vinedressers, for the wheat and for the barley; because the harvest of the field is perished.

It is only those made hungry by the Lord who will in due time be filled and satisfied.

Mat 5:6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Amos begs the Lord to forgive and remove the chastening and at the appointed time, when the Word has accomplished its purpose in teachings us, the Lord repents.

Amo 7:3 The LORD repented H5162 for this: It shall not be, saith the LORD.

This verse along with Amo 7:6 needs to be put into proper understanding using the SUM of the word. The Lord does not repent in the way that word is meant in the New Testament. The Lord’s plan has been declared from the beginning (Isa 46:10), including every minute detail of our lives (Psa 139:16). This immutable fact is still the truth.

Heb 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.

Mal 3:6 For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

1Sa 15:29 And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent.

Jas 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

So, when we read the rest of the verses such as Amo 7:3 and 7:6 along with Gen 6:6, Exo 32.14 and others that say the Lord repented; we need to understand what the Lord’s repentance means. As recent studies in Isaiah and the email thread on God’s wrath reminded us, the Lord is not saving the old man and never intended for flesh and blood to inherit the kingdom of God (1Co 15:50). His wrath is for the specific purpose and when that purpose is fulfilled He repents of that wrath and we move on to the next experience of evil that is maturing us.

Psa 34:19 Many are the afflictions (evils – ra) of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.

Ecc 1:13 (CLV)  I applied my heart to inquiring and exploring by wisdom concerning all that is done under the heavens: it is an experience of evil Elohim has given to the sons of humanity to humble them by it.

The word translated “repentance” in the Old Testament reveals the two-edged sword of the Lord. The Lord repenting of the evil He afflicts us with, teaches us and is used to grow our faith and comforts the new man. The same word for repentance is the same word for comfort.

“It shall not be” says the Lord, that Jacob who is small will not arise. Contrary to our carnal doubts expressed through Amos, Jacob, will arise as that is the promise of the Lord. We are raised up only as Christ within us is resurrected. That arising process includes us first conceiving chaff and building on another foundation first.

Isa 33:10 Now will I rise, saith the LORD; now will I be exalted; now will I lift up myself.

Isa 33:11 Ye shall conceive chaff, ye shall bring forth stubble: your breath, as fire, shall devour you.

1Co 6:14 And God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own power.

The Vision of Fire in the Deep:

The Lord continues giving Amos further vision or spiritual understanding into His process with the second of the visions.

Amo 7:4 Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me: and, behold, the Lord GOD called to contend by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and did eat up a part.

The great deep represents our flesh, which is also symbolized by the seas in Scripture. It is our baptism into Christ, by judgment, that breaks up this deep and delivers us from the miry clay of our flesh and our bondage to sins.

Gen 7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

Psa 69:14 Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink: let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters.

Job 41:31 He maketh the deep to boil like a pot: he maketh the sea like a pot of ointment.

The Lord created our heaven and earth in the beginning and made the spiritual darkness first so He could come again to call Light out of that darkness. Our whole life in clay vessels is integral (alpha and omega) to the Lord’s plan of bringing the light forward and dividing it from the darkness.

Gen 1:2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

Gen 1:3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. .

1Pe 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

Only the Lord’s fire poured into the deep can pull up the serpent (leviathan – Job 27:1) that lives there and destroy the beast that lives there and is given power over our flesh.

Rev 16:10 And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain,

The devouring of the spiritual sea within by fire is how the sea is burned up and ceases to exist. This signifies salvation and the destruction of all flesh. In this age, the elect see this in down payment form as a new heaven (mind) and earth (walk) are being formed within us as we stand above the sea gaining dominion over the flesh (Rev 15:2). Yet the end of this age at the end of the outward millennium reign, when the last enemy death is destroyed, there will be no more flesh as the sea shall be no more.

Rev 21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

The harlot rides the beast (Rev 17:3) who ascends out of the great deep and is ruled by our father the devil. The same fire that is burning up the flesh (sea) will likewise destroy the harlot and be the causation of the melting of our old earth that is passing away.

Zec 9:4 Behold, the Lord will cast her out, and he will smite her power in the sea; and she shall be devoured with fire.

2Pe 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

The vision reveals it is by fire that the Lord is contending/pleading with His people.  Once this fire is casted to our earth (Luk 12:49), then the trumpets begin to blow and the seven bowls of wrath are being poured out and the doom of our old man and man of sin is set.

Rev 16:1 And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.

Amos and all the Lord’s prophets, will first naturally in our unbelief beg the Lord to stop and to cease with the burning and to remove the fire that is devouring the deep.

Amo 7:5 Then said I, O Lord GOD, cease, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.

Amo 7:6 The LORD repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord GOD.

We see through Amos, that judgment is a process. Judgment comes to us by the Word which we can only understand and apply when able to bear it (1Co 10:13, Joh 16:12). The Lord is destroying Jacob, yet not totally destroying Jacob. The old is being destroyed so the new can come forth.

Jer 30:11 For I am with thee, saith the LORD, to save thee: though I make a full end of all nations whither I have scattered thee, yet will I not make a full end of thee: but I will correct thee in measure, and will not leave thee altogether unpunished.

Amo 9:8 Behold, the eyes of the Lord GOD are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth; saving that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, saith the LORD.

This fire eats up the portion assigned and this comes little by little by the process of winnowing. The Lord always (is, was and will be) has something against us until we are perfected on the third day (Rev 2:14, Rev 2:20, Mar 10:18).

It is natural for us to cry out to the Lord and for salvation. Coming to our wits ends requires the deep within to be stirred up and the waves (lies/unbelief) overtake us. We have to come to the place of total helplessness and have exhausted all other avenues of saving ourselves.

Psa 107:24 These see the works of the LORD, and his wonders in the deep.

Psa 107:25 For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof.

Psa 107:26 They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble.

Psa 107:27 They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits’ end.

Psa 107:28 Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.

It takes us time to grow in faith and fully trust in the Lord’s promises. We learn to stand in faith and do not despair knowing that those ordained to be saved, will be saved in this age.

Rom 9:27 Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved:

Rom 9:28 For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth.

The Lord will “repent” by turning away from our carnal nature that is rebelling against Him for the purpose of destroying that mindset and the man of sin. Our house and old way of life is being left to us desolate by design (Rom 8:20-21).

Mat 23:37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

Mat 23:38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.

Next week Lord willing, we will start with the third visions regarding the plumbline.

Amo 7:7 Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand.

Amo 7:8 And the LORD said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more:

Micah Part 7 – The Secret Place of the Lord

By Pete Wilson

The study of Micah has once again shown us the value and hidden wisdom of digging deep into the symbols and meanings of names and places.  It is a wonderful reminder and an awestruck revelation to know that all these words were written exclusively for the admonition of the Elect, upon whom the ends of our carnal age have come now.

1Co 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

The promises given to Abraham and all physical Israel in type and shadow are the spiritual promises given to the true Jews, the Elect which is also the Body of Christ. The promise of salvation and the inheritance of the land is all about Christ ruling the cities and nations within us.  A prophet of the Lord like Micah comes and speaks to us in all these cities we are studying and if we have been prepared of the Lord to receive a new truth, we are given to hear and OBEY and that is how we mature with time.

Isa 55:11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

We will first study our tenth city, the city of Mareshah.  Our victory in Christ is completed as we overcome these ten enemy nations within us that represent the power of the flesh and the carnal mind.

Gen 15:18 In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:

Gen 15:19 The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites,

Gen 15:20 And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims,

Gen 15:21 And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.

Ham, Noah’s son  was the father of Canaan who in turn was the father of many (spiritual) nations and these last three cities listed in the land of promise given to Abraham all tie back to Canaan.

1Ch 1:13 And Canaan begat Zidon his firstborn, and Heth,

1Ch 1:14 The Jebusite also, and the Amorite, and the Girgashite,

These Canaanites nations, especially the Jebusites are most difficult to overcome and relate to the strength of the flesh. The flesh will however serve Christ and bow down by this very process we endure.

Gen 9:25 And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren.

These Canaanites nations, especially the Jebusites are most difficult to overcome and relate to the strength of the flesh.  Living flesh always has a beast that “yet is” and such are the Jebusites within us.  The Elect (Judah and Benjamin) will always face struggles/trials in overcoming these spirits so long as we are still in these clay vessels.  Here is why we should always take heed, examining ourselves and stay connected to the Body who are there to watch over us.

Jos 15:63 As for the Jebusites the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the children of Judah could not drive them out: but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Judah at Jerusalem unto this day.

Jdg 1:21 And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.

Many interesting connections exist between the Jebusites and Jerusalem.  Jerusalem was also known as Jebus because of the Jebushites that dwell there.

Jdg 19:10 But the man would not tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus, which is Jerusalem; and there were with him two asses saddled, his concubine also was with him.

The root of Jebusites links them [H947] to the polluting of ourselves (Eze 16 harlot sisters) and trampling underfoot the truth by wicked pastors (Jer 12:10).  We must take heed to the Jebusite spirits and have no confidence in the flesh while we occupy clay vessels created in sin.  We must never forget the ongoing need for diligence and vigilance to keep going straight and not veering to the right nor to the left.

Pro 4:25 Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.

Pro 4:26 Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.

Pro 4:27 Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.

The only way to avoid evil is to walk straight, following the Lord and His Doctrines.

Luk 13:24 Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.

And we always seem to be learning, FEW are given to do it, many fall away having walked with the Lord for a season.  We can only do this by abiding IN THE BODY and submitting to its governance as the Scriptures declare.  Any other way will lead us astray.

Eze 1:9 Their wings were joined one to another; they turned not when they went; they went every one straight forward.

Eze 1:12 And they went every one straight forward: whither the spirit was to go, they went; and they turned not when they went.

We have just witnessed some breaking ranks with us by no longer joining their wings with the Body and turning off the straight path of eternal life.  With this humble reminder, let us move on towards maturity and review our final two cities mentioned in this one verse.

Mic 1:15 Yet will I bring an heir unto thee, O inhabitant of Mareshah: he shall come unto Adullam the glory of Israel.

10. Yet will I bring an heir unto thee, O inhabitant of Mareshah:

Mareshah is where we begin to stop having confidence in the flesh.  This is where we make the transition in our heavens and the ruling dominion of flesh vs spirit switches.  The victories come little by little, city by city lest we get puffed up and the deep seated beastly nature (PRIDE) increases upon us.

Deu 7:22 And the LORD thy God will put out those nations before thee by little and little: thou mayest not consume them at once, lest the beasts of the field increase upon thee.

Jesus Christ is the first and the last.  Christ in us and thru us is the alpha (beginning) and the omega (the end) and all points in between.  A minister of grace commissioned in Moreshethgath is followed by us then being snared in the lies of Achzib.  All part of His plan to teach us good and evil and conform us to His image through many tribulation experiences.  I particularly liked the God’s Word translation of Micah 1:15 because it brings home an important point.

Mic 1:15 God’s Word – I will again bring a conqueror against the inhabitants of Mareshah. The glory of Israel will come to Adullam.

The fleshly mindset that we are overcoming of our strength is destroyed at Mareshah.  We learn that this overcomer within us is responsible for the victories and it is through His Spirit and not our own might or strength (Zec 4:6).

1Jn 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

Rev 6:2 And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.

When we are in Mareshah we have come far and our training for our roles as Kings and Priests, judging and ruling the world (threshing) ratchets up as we mature.  If we are truly Christ’s, then we are the true heirs to the promise given to Abraham.  The righteousness of faith is how we become heir of the earth which earth we are.  Killing our spirit of self-righteousness is indeed only done by the destruction of the Canaanite nations within us that so much want to share in God’s glory by delivering ourselves.

Rom 4:13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

We learn to wait and be patient on this long journey and must finish the race. The city of Mareshah, like Gath, Lachish, Addulam and even Hebron are of the 15 cities (3 process of judgment x 5 chastening grace thru faith), the King of Judah (you and me), build for the defense of the Holy City.  We saw this last week but is worth being reminded. Experiencing all these cities is how we are matured in the Lord’s timing.  Living by every word includes these words!

2Ch 11:5 And Rehoboam dwelt in Jerusalem, and built cities for defence in Judah.

2Ch 11:6 He built even Bethlehem, and Etam, and Tekoa,

2Ch 11:7 And Bethzur, and Shoco, and Adullam,

2Ch 11:8 And Gath, and Mareshah, and Ziph,

2Ch 11:9 And Adoraim, and Lachish, and Azekah,

2Ch 11:10 And Zorah, and Aijalon, and Hebron, which are in Judah and in Benjamin fenced cities.

2Ch 11:11 And he fortified the strong holds, and put captains in them, and store of victual, and of oil and wine.

But the problem with Rehoboam was the same problem his father King Solomon had and you and me have on our way to becoming mature.  Getting all the gifts of the Lord and receiving great spiritual knowledge is not enough to satisfy our carnal lusts.  We want more as the beast within has an insatiable appetite for gain including knowledge, reputation, a following and certainly wants some of the glory. With this spirit of discontentment, we are unfaithful to our One Husband Christ.  In our immaturity, we lust after and seek after more spiritual wives and this is how we continue to play the harlot well after we have been abiding in the Truth.  We are not faithful to our Husband Christ nor our true wife which is the Body of Christ.  We do well for a time and a season even being given many victories; but that inward pride reveals itself and our harlotry will come out in our day of the Lord.

2Ch 11:23 And he (Rehoboam and in type all the kings of Judah) dealt wisely, and dispersed of all his children throughout all the countries of Judah and Benjamin, unto every fenced city: and he gave them victual in abundance. And he (you and me) desired many wives.

The city of Mareshah represents the completion of our fleshly dominance, our headship and the moving on to the more mature way of walking.  We learn to wage spiritual warfare and try the spirits, knowing how easy it is for our deceitful hearts to be led astray.   Mareshah comes from H4762 “Marashah” and will be linked to the headship and the principalities in our heavens.

Formed like H4761; summit; Mareshah, the name of two Israelites and of a place in Palestine: – Mareshah.

The root word for Mareshah is H4761

mar’âshâh

principalities, 1 Jer_13:18

Jer 13:18 Say unto the king and to the queen, Humble yourselves, sit down: for your principalities [H4761] shall come down, even the crown of your glory.

And right here we see the link of Mareshah to the principalities that are in our heavens that keep us prideful and puffed up which will need to brought low.

Isa 2:12 For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low:

The story here in Jeremiah 13 is the Lord showing these sins and our marred condition outside of Him.  The very people He drags into Jerusalem become drunk as they seek after knowledge and gain instead of doing the Word.

Jer 13:13 Then shalt thou say unto them, Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will fill all the inhabitants of this land, even the kings that sit upon David’s throne, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, with drunkenness.

But our deep seated carnal rebellion driven by the principalities in our heavens will not hear and will remain proud and our light will be turned into darkness.

Jer 13:15 Hear ye, and give ear; be not proud: for the LORD hath spoken.

Jer 13:16 Give glory to the LORD your God, before he cause darkness, and before your feet stumble upon the dark mountains, and, while ye look for light, he turn it into the shadow of death, and make it gross darkness.

And this is how heresies the Lord brings to the Body are used to winnow down the flock and only leave the remnant that will again be subject to more burning and chastening.

Jer 13:17 But if ye will not hear it, my soul shall weep in secret places for your pride; and mine eye shall weep sore, and run down with tears, because the LORD’S flock is carried away captive.

These lying spirits must be spoiled and overcome within us.  This is accomplished by being vigilant about our doctrine and guarding our gates.  We must put on the whole armor of God daily knowing the war of thoughts we battle in the pulls of the flesh vs the Spirit.

Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Mareshah means summit as can be confirmed by looking at the underlying root of Principalities [H4761] which is head, or top [H7218] in the vast majority of its use.

Isa 30:17 One thousand shall flee at the rebuke of one; at the rebuke of five shall ye flee: till ye be left as a beacon upon the top [H7218] of a mountain, and as an ensign on an hill.

Exo 17:9 And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top [H7218] of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand.

Mareshah is where we are given to overcome the principalities of pride and self-righteousness so we can then stay joined to the Body and go straight without wavering.  Few make it and the rest are led astray by false prophets that come to us looking like members of the Body of Christ.

Mat 7:14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

Mat 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

Here are the eight places Mareshah is referenced in Scripture.  These are not history lessons but are rather words you and I shall live by everyone (Mat 4:4, Luk 4:4).

mareshah, 8

Jos_15:44, 1Ch_2:42, 1Ch_4:21, 2Ch_14:8-10 (3), 2Ch_20:37, Mic_1:15

The people of Mareshah are the sons of Caleb.  Caleb was the great grandson of Judah born of Tamar’s son Hezron and known as Chelubai (1 Ch 2:18-19).

1Ch 2:42 Now the sons of Caleb the brother of Jerahmeel were, Mesha his firstborn, which was the father of Ziph; and the sons of Mareshah the father of Hebron.

The sons and house of Caleb has many witnesses to actions outside of faith (sin).  Mesha the first born of Caleb, became the king of Moab who helped Israel build a temple made by hands of men.  Likewise, Nabal, an evil man, who did not submit to Christ in David was also said to be of the house of Caleb (1 Sam 25:3).

The Strong’s definition of Caleb has a most revealing insight into the spirit of Caleb.

 H3611, keleb’ keh’-leb

From an unused root meaning to yelp, or else to attack; a dog

A dog is someone outside the covenant of faith.  A dog has confidence in the flesh and by extension linked to some other bad things.

Rev 22:15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.

The Lord’s people are to beware of dogs in our midst who have confidence in the flesh of men.

Php 3:2 Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision.

Php 3:3 For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.

Hebron is the offspring of the sons of Mareshah. The root of Hebron is the same word translated as charmers and enchanters H2267.

Psa_58:5

The Lord’s people are to stay far away from such “charming” activities and not be talking with either the physically dead and spiritually dead.

Deu 18:10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,

Deu 18:11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.

This spirit of Caleb is indeed a DOG Spirit that leads us into rebellion to the house of the Lord.  It puts us in alliance with the Canaanites within, joining us together to peddle the things of the Lord for ungodly gain.  Jehoshaphat, King of Judah (you and me) did just that.

2Ch 20:35 And after this did Jehoshaphat king of Judah join himself with Ahaziah king of Israel, who did very wickedly:

2Ch 20:36 And he joined [H2266, root of 2267 – charmed] himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish: and they made the ships in Eziongeber.

It is in Mareshah that we are delivered and rebuke this merchandising spirit and learn to be content with where the Lord has us.

2Ch 20:37 Then Eliezer the son of Dodavah of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, Because thou hast joined thyself with Ahaziah, the LORD hath broken thy works. And the ships were broken, that they were not able to go to Tarshish.

The last story we will look at to confirm the process of maturing thru Mareshah is the story of King Asa of Judah who battled the Ethiopians.  Like an Ethiopian and even a leopard we can’t change anything of ourselves.  We are helpless and at the mercy of the Lord for our salvation and anything in our life.  This battle against the Ethiopians within also takes place “in a valley”, one called Zephathah.  In Mareshah a conversion of our headship is made and we have a great victory in this valley.

2Ch 14:2 And Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God:

2Ch 14:4 And commanded Judah to seek the LORD God of their fathers, and to do the law and the commandment.

2Ch 14:9 And there came out against them Zerah the Ethiopian with an host of a thousand thousand, and three hundred chariots; and came unto Mareshah.

2Ch 14:10 Then Asa went out against him, and they set the battle in array in the valley of Zephathah at Mareshah.

2Ch 14:11 And Asa cried unto the LORD his God, and said, LORD, it is nothing with thee to help, whether with many, or with them that have no power: help us, O LORD our God; for we rest on thee, and in thy name we go against this multitude. O LORD, thou art our God; let not man prevail against thee.

2Ch 14:12 So the LORD smote the Ethiopians before Asa, and before Judah; and the Ethiopians fled.

Mareshah is where we find the valley of Zephathah.  An important valley we must learn to walk thru on the way to maturity.  Doing spiritual warfare and being obedient watchmen is essential for us to become the mature man in Christ.

Eze 3:17 Son of man, I have made thee a watchman [H6822] unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me.

We saw in Steve’s recent study on Proverbs 31, the role the Body as a whole and us as members play as faithful watchmen over the flock.

Pro 31:27 She looketh well [H6822] to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.

So we can begin to see Mareshah is directly associated with maturing us into able warriors of spiritual warfare.  It takes time for us to be trained up as warriors starting in our own walk but also becoming a helper of other’s joy in the Lord. Agape love is our obedience.

We have been talking about valleys.  What is a valley?  It is generally defined as a low area of land surrounded by hills or mountains typically a river or water running through it.  Valleys are most commonly formed through the erosion of land by rivers or glaciers.  Some very interesting Romans 1:20 applications here.  Spiritual valleys are where we are shaped and formed by the living waters that flow out of the mouths of God’s Elect here in the Body of Christ.

Joh 7:38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

That is what shapes the earth and erodes the high points and ultimately matures us.  The valley of Jehoshaphat and the valley of Zephathah are the valleys of decisions and where the heathen nations within us (the earth) is judged and where we learn righteousness.

Joe 3:14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision [Gold or Diligence]: for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.

It is the Kings and Priests of the Lord who are our lake of fire in this age, who speak the Word that roars out of the Holy City.  This shakes our heavens and earth and is the method by which all things are made new.

Joe 3:16 The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.

This tenth city in this journey, Mareshah represents the completion of our flesh and maturing in our ability to wage war and the watchmen over the flock of the Lord.  This comes in an “is, was and will be” process of winnowing and the remainder repeating the process.  We move on from here to receive our inheritance a much more mature man and useful to the Lord in many ways.

11. He shall come unto Adullam the glory of Israel.

We addressed Adullam in Part 3 to show where this journey was going to end up.  This is the last of these 11 cities and the one from where our inheritance comes.

Mic 1:15 Yet will I bring an heir unto thee, O inhabitant of Mareshah: he shall come unto Adullam the glory of Israel.

As we saw in Part 3, Adullam is best known for being a cave of safety, a place of refuge for Christ and His people.  This is the Body of Christ in type and shadow and where the glory of the Lord is found in His cloud of witnesses.  David hid himself in this cave from both Achish King of Gath (think beast) but also from Saul (old man) who was persecuting him.  This too is where we find refuge from a world waxing worse and worse.  It is in this secret cave where the army of the Lord is assembled from what the world thinks is foolishness.

1Sa 22:1 David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father’s house heard it, they went down thither to him.

1Sa 22:2 And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men.

This is who the Lord chooses as His warriors.  The pride of life and all these Philistine and Canaanite spirits must be burned out of us before the glory of the Lord truly shines forth in our walk.  The story of Adullam and the assembling of the army of David reminds me of who the Lord assembles in His army choosing ones the world esteems not (Isa 53:3).

1Co 1:26 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:

1Co 1:27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;

Our coming to Adullam is us finding our true spiritual home and place of refuge to endure our lives where we have been appointed to suffer and bear afflictions.   Only the few chosen that are faithful will find this cave and thrive in it.

Psa 91:1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

Psa 91:2 I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.

Psa 91:3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.

Psa 91:4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

A cave is a dark place to the world and is often associated with death and burial in the Scriptures. It is thru darkness and death (to the old man and carnal mind) that new life comes forth.  Jacob and his fathers were buried in a cave (Gen 49:29) and like Lazarus we are resurrected in new life when our old man is found dead in cave.

Joh 11:38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave (of Lazarus). It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.

Like all words of Scripture there is both a light and dark side (Exo 14:20) of the Word, a two edged sword (Heb 4:12).  The prophets of the Lord are fed by other prophets in a cave and that cave represents the Body of Christ.

1Ki 18:4 For it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD, that Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.

The Lord is assembling His true people in this and each generation who will be and are His instruments of salvation and judgment.  This journey has winnowed down the remnant and few are left walking the straight and narrow road.  It is from this inheritance given at Addulam that we go out in strength and make war and the noise in the hearts and minds of those given salvation.

Mic 2:12 I will surely assemble, O Jacob, all of thee; I will surely gather the remnant of Israel; I will put them together as the sheep of Bozrah, as the flock in the midst of their fold: they shall make great noise by reason of men.

Isa 55:12 For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.

Adullam is said to be the glory of Israel and is the last city mentioned on this progressive journey.  It represents our reaching maturity such that the light of Jesus Christ is seen in us by our DOING THE WORD and being a servant. The disintegration of the fleshly perfection we achieve in our self-righteousness is the outcome of the entire 11 city journey.  This transfiguration is complete when we love the Lord and His Christ with all our heart, mind and strength.

1Jn 3:14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.

Isa 60:1 Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee.

We grow in our ability to minister grace as we mature.  We are now a more able Ambassador, having been sent (Rom 10:15) and having been proved in the fire of tribulations and engaging in daily warfare in our heavens.   The glory of the Lord appears in us and on us and we are now a light unto the world.

Mat 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.

Mat 5:15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house (The Body)

Mat 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

We are now coming to see the Lord’s plans and purposes in greater detail.  We have been prepared for the walk of a disciple and now thru that walk will be brought onto completion and prepared of the Lord for every good work.  At Adullam we are past the point of boasting knowing how we got to this point and why the Lord has brought us here and given us an inheritance.

Eph 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

We still have a journey; the race is not over. Yet we have been matured, we have been prepared for the ongoing process of refinement, the winnowing that never ends while we live in clay vessels.   But now we have the maturity and knowledge to endure this with patience.   We now know what to expect (Amo 3:7) and are laying down our life to the Lord more each day.

Next week Lord willing, we will complete Chapter 1 and have a quick recap of the eleven cities and the lessons we learn and things we overcome on our way to maturity.
