Nahum Part 11 – The trees of the field clap their hands

by Pete Wilson

This Scripture like all Scripture is about you and me if we are proven to be God’s sons and found faithful in the end (Rev 17:14) i.e. end of our ages in each of our lives. Our carnal instinct is to put these words off on someone else, perhaps on the people still in Orthodoxy or maybe some babes that just came into the fellowship of the saints. But they certainly cannot apply to us we want to believe. But oh yes, they do and we had best remember these Words of fire.

Rev 22:19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

We cannot take away these words of Nahum and not apply them to ourselves. It is only by living them that the man is blessed and brought to life in this age. That is the prize and upwards calling of Christ that comes to so very few. The story of King David as a type of Christ yet in a marred vessel of weak flesh is our story. Like David, we will fall down hard into sin at times in order to be taught the righteousness of Jesus Christ (Isa 26:9). We (you and me and all men) in our own turn, are the man who does these evil things and we are paying the consequences as the wages of all sin is death. Like David found out, having the truth in an outward form of godliness is not enough. We must do the truth in order to have power over sin.

A prophet of the Lord “is, was and will be” sent to God’s Elect and they are speaking words that reveal our rebellion and sin against the Lord. We all claim our righteousness yet still “oppress the poor and kill Christ” as the story of 2 Samuel 12 conveys. Having been told of this egregious sin we become indignant and seek vengeance on the oppressor not aware that we are the man. The Word will prick our hearts in that day which is now on His House.

2Sa 12:7 And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;

Having been given all the gifts of God and possessing our Master’s House in the Body, we still seek to save our life in the flesh and despise the Lord’s commands.

2Sa 12:9 Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.

Yet our day of judgment has come, now the Lord who was delivered through our offences, will be raised again through our justification (Rom 4:25). It is both a wonderful and terrible thing to have a sword abiding on our house. The Lord will use it to raise up evil from within us as Nahum has prophesied to reveal our wickedness to ourselves.

2Sa 12:10 Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.

2Sa 12:11 Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.

Our justification will be done before the Body of Christ; before the Sun of Righteousness.

2Sa 12:12 For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.

We will come to see ourselves as natural reasoning beasts in far greater depravity than we once thought and we will continue to be humbled by and through this process. That first born child of our adulterous fornicating relationship of Truth and carnal lusts must die for the true man child to come forth. We come to see our sin and are given to see our continued fornication with this world WITHIN AND WITHOUT. The great grasshoppers within that kept us from being diligent are removed from our vision and the yet carnal child shall surely die within us.

2Sa 12:14 Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die.

As horrible as all of this sounds, it is very necessary for us to endure the words of the prophecy of the Book of Nahum. It is the only way we learn good and evil and are brought forward to maturity where our fruit can abide and be used for the Lord. The Lord truly makes free!

Heb 5:1 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Ecc 1:13 I applied my heart to inquiring and exploring by wisdom concerning all that is done under the heavens:it is an experience of evil Elohim has given to the sons of humanity to humble them by it.

Here are the final two verses of the Book of Nahum.

Nah 3:18 Thy shepherds slumber, O king of Assyria: thy nobles shall dwell in the dust: thy people is scattered upon the mountains, and no man gathereth them.

Nah 3:19 There is no healing of thy bruise; thy wound is grievous: all that hear the bruit of thee shall clap the hands over thee: for upon whom hath not thy wickedness passed continually?

This prophesy ends very abruptly. Where is the beautiful ending where the war is over and everyone is happy and joyous and there is peace in the land? This prophesy ends with the fatalistic prognosis that the wound is grievous and there is not going to be any healing.   There are not many secular studies on Nahum and it is easy to understand why. Those without “ears to hear and eyes to see” are totally unaware of what the Scriptures say and mean and do not have a clue to the strange act of the Lord in bringing forth new life through death.

Prophets such as Nahum in type and shadow and all of God’s sons [those who have the Spirit of Christ] are being sent to prepare the way for the fire to come. We know what the Lord is doing in this regard before He does it so we are being prepared to endure it.

Amo 3:7 Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.

If we know the definition of LOVE (Agape) and keep in mind it means obedience to the Lord’s commandments (1 Jo 5:3), then the love chapter of Corinthians takes on a whole new meaning. Being blessed with all this knowledge and understanding (riches, treasures of the Temple) and being placed in the Body of Christ, amount to nothing without love and our ministry is nothing more than a clanging gong.

1Co 13:1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.

1Co 13:2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

Last’s week’s sobering message reminded us that we must endure to the end and take heed of the things we know and be diligent, lest we drift away. Here is another admonishment of the same.

Heb 2:1 Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.

Heb 2:2 For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward,

Heb 2:3 how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him,

My hope is in the commands of Christ in me and you, and that the Lord will turn and heal us every day so that His commands overtake the prophet’s words.

Zec 1:4 (NLT) Don’t be like your ancestors who would not listen or pay attention when the earlier prophets said to them, ‘This is what the LORD of Heaven’s Armies says: Turn from your evil ways, and stop all your evil practices.

Nah 3:18 Thy shepherds slumber, O king of Assyria: thy nobles shall dwell in the dust: thy people is scattered upon the mountains, and no man gathereth them.

To slumber is to not work. The working of the wicked one, the messengers of Baal within us, is silenced in the purging of our carnal mindedness. The king of our fleshly kingdoms within (the King of Assyria) which shall dwell in the dust and the carnal shepherds which are those great grasshoppers will be scattered on these mountains or kingdoms where the spiritual harlot within us sits. We see this same sequence in our latter stage of judgment as the religious beast we are and the great harlot within are judged.

Dan 2:35 Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold were crushed together, and became like chaff from the summer threshing floors; the wind carried them away so that no trace of them was found. And the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.

Those false shepherds will no longer work in our heavens as they will be scattered (decreased) by the whirlwind of the Lord’s judgment brought by the feet of brass “is, was, and will be” every day. This was in our first study where we saw that we, the Body of Christ, the great cloud of His witnesses are the dust of the Lord’s feet.

Nah 1:3 The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.

When the true saviors, the Body of Christ are sent within (Obe 1:21), there will be no slumbering or sleeping. We are to be like our Lord who was like His Father and THEY were always working in the kingdom of God (Joh 5:17). When the armies of the Lord come within and without us, they come quickly and they come without any slumbering (Isa 5:26-28).

Without a shepherd to lead us the Lord causes us to return to His house.

2Ch 18:16 Then he said, I did see all Israel scattered upon the mountains, as sheep that have no shepherd: and the LORD said, These have no master; let them return therefore every man to his house in peace.

We that hear the Word and enter through the door are the shepherds of the sheep not like the hirelings who flee when the wolves come.

Joh 10:2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

We are all scattered when the shepherd within us is smitten.

Zec 13:7 Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.

Zec 13:8 And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the LORD, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein.

Zec 13:9 And I will bring the third part (the latter judgment) through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.

The carnal man will not be gathered back, the Assyrian King will dwell in the dust being an inherent part of the beast that “was, is not but yet is” as long as we occupy the clay vessels.

But the wheat representing His Elect will be gathered back from the four winds of heaven.  This baptism of fire (Mat 3:11) is orchestrated by the fanners which are the Lord’s Elect and through the Words we speak.

Mat 3:12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

Mat 24:31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

Rev 14:18 And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe.

Nah 3:19 There is no healing of thy bruise [H7667]; thy wound is grievous: all that hear the bruit of thee shall clap the hands over thee: for upon whom hath not thy wickedness passed continually?

The affliction of the old man with his carnal mind is the bruise that will not be healed. The old man is being destroyed and that is all by the Lord’s design (Jer 18:4, 1 Cor 15:50, Rom 8:20). The word translated as bruise is the Strong’s Hebrew word H7667 “sheber”. This is most often used as destruction and interestingly enough is the word translated hurt, from which Babylon heals us superficially in Jeremiah 6 and 8.

Jer 6:14 They have healed also the hurt (destruction) of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.

It is the other jesus we falsely believe wants to stop this “destruction” within us when the reality is He is the One causing it.

This bruise is the same breach in our walls for whom the Lord looked for someone to stand in the gap but found none (Eze 22:30). The old man is not being saved period. In fact the old man is instead purposefully being destroyed. The marred vessel of Jeremiah 18 is this destroyed vessel in the hands of the Potter who is working ALL THINGS.

Jer 18:4 And the vessel that he made of clay was DESTROYED/marred [H7483]: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter in the hand of the potter to make it.

Notice that all we do (you and me), both good and bad, either spirit led or carnally minded was done in the hand of the Potter. The Lord uses it all to bring about good in the end.

Jer 30:11 For I am with thee, saith the LORD, to save thee: though I make a full end of all nations whither I have scattered thee, yet will I not make a full end of thee: but I will correct thee in measure, and will not leave thee altogether unpunished.

Jer 30:12 For thus saith the LORD, Thy bruise is incurable, and thy wound is grievous.

Jer 30:13 There is none to plead thy cause, that thou mayest be bound up: thou hast no healing medicines.

Our true healing will come only to the new man. He IS BEING healed and all the nations within us by abiding in the heavenly city of Jerusalem with time.

Rev 22:1 And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.

Rev 22:2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

The head of the serpent within us is given a deadly wound from which there will be no recovery. The ten horned seven headed beasts of our father the devil are given this deadly bruise by the feet of the woman which is the Bride of Christ in type and shadow. We just have to be patient and wait for the Lord to accomplish the incurable bruising of the serpent’s head (Gen 3:15).

Rom 16:20 And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

Practically speaking this all happens by the old man being smitten by the new man within us. Jesus Christ, when He appears in our heavens, does not bring peace but a sword. He comes to divide and the old man will indeed be cut off by the symbolic beheading of our carnal mind. This is the only way to be given the mind of Christ (1 Co 2:16, Rev 20:4).

The payback of “Spiritual Babylon” representing those in the Body of Christ is a double judgment. Our old man is first slain by the Rock that is Christ but then it is also necessary for the head of the beast to be cut off spiritually speaking. That is the purpose of this second coming and our baptism by fire. We see it here in type and shadow in the story of David killing Goliath. We must have the sword in our hands, IN OUR WORK for the Lord to shed the mind of the beast by cutting it off.

1Sa 17:50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.

1Sa 17:51 Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.

For us to not worship the beast anymore, recognizing the beast “was, is not and yet is” (Rev 17:18), the head must be cut off and that is exactly what is being concluded here in Nahum.

Clapping of Hands

Our last verse tells us that all that hear the report or fame of our carnally minded old man/beast will clap their hands over us as this state of being is destroyed within us. This was confusing to me and took a lot of digging to come to the knowledge of what is really being said here. It turns out there is both a positive and a negative to every word of Christ including references to the clapping of hands.

To clap our hands physically we must bring our right and left hands together to make a sound.  That is what happens in the Spirit if we apply Romans 1:20.  Knowing that “Christ” is the right hand of the Lord and “Satan” the left hand. Job chapter 1 and the coming together of the Lord, Satan and the sons of God illustrates this.

Job 1:11 But put forth thine hand (The Lord’s) now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.
Job 1:12 And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand (Satan’s). So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.

Spiritually speaking clapping hands is what we do when this war of the carnal mind vs the spirit is waging.  A noise is made and as we will see it is linked to the sounds of a trumpet and the blowing of trumpets that bring forth victory and salvation. Both sides of the sword come into view in looking at the spiritual significance of hand clapping.

According to my review of several Jewish or religious history sites, unlike our modern traditions the clapping of hands in ancient times was a custom to show disdain, disagreement and generally a negative attitude about somebody or something. A quick run through of these four verbs translated at times as the word CLAP will show this.

H5606 – smite, striketh, smote, clap

Num 24:10 And Balak’s anger was kindled against Balaam, and he smote his hands together: and Balak said unto Balaam, I called thee to curse mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast altogether blessed them these three times.

Job 27:23 Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of his place.

H5221 – smote, smitten, kill, slew, clapped

Eze 22:13 Behold, therefore I have smitten mine hand at thy dishonest gain which thou hast made, and at thy blood which hath been in the midst of thee.

2Ki 11:12 And he brought forth the king’s son, and put the crown upon him, and gave him the testimony; and they made him king, and anointed him; and they clapped their hands, and said, God save the king.

The intent of clapping was to express their intent to smite and destroy the wicked Queen Althaliah, replacing her with the rightful king, six-year-old Joash. Here is a third word only found three places but always translated as clap and includes a most famous passage.

H4222 – clap, clappeth, A primitive root; to rub or strike the hands together (in exultation): – clap.

Eze 25:6 For thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast clapped thine hands, and stamped with the feet, and rejoiced in heart with all thy despite against the land of Israel;

Isa 55:12 For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.

Finally, the word translated as clap in our focused verse of Nahum 3:19 comes from H8628.

H8628, taw-kah’

A primitive root; to clatter, that is, slap (the hands together), clang (an instrument); by analogy to drive (a nail or tent pin, a dart, etc.); by implication to become bondsman (by handclasping): – blow ([a trumpet]), cast, clap, fasten, pitch [tent], smite, sound, strike, X suretiship, thrust.

Total KJV occurrences: 69

Of the sixty-nine occurrences of this Hebrew word, it is only translated clap twice. Here is the only other place it is used as clap.

Psa 47:1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm for the sons of Korah. O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph.

Psa 47:2 For the LORD most high is terrible; he is a great King over all the earth.

Psa 47:3 He shall subdue the people under us, and the nations under our feet.

This clapping of hands like the use in Nahum 3:19 is associated with subduing the enemies of God within us which means gaining dominion over the pulls of the flesh and carnal mind. What is very instructive to extract the parable of the clapping of hands is to look at how this word H8628 is used in the majority of the cases. Here we see words that continue the linkage with actions like smite, smitten and slay when one considers what the blowing of trumpets and the bringing of judgment represent.

Eze_7:14

Clapping of hands whether in a positive reference (the coming forth of the new man), or a negative reference (the destruction and death of the old man and carnal mind) are one in the same. The dream is ONE and both represent the work of the Lord bringing salvation to His people.  This is through the war in our heaven (Rev 12:9). It is “Christ” who does the work of the Lord within and without so we use our hands to cast light on the wicked and to bring forth praises for the good work of the Lord in ourselves and in our brethren. Both sides of this transaction are worthy of clapping!

The clapping of hands and the breaking out of the hills and mountains with joy, is the new man coming forth within us as the Word is working its work in the kingdom of God within us. Here are a couple examples of the hands of the Lord at work using H8628 (the same word translated clap in its more frequent translation as blow or blew).

Eze 33:3 If when he seeth the sword come upon the land, he blow the trumpet, and warn the people;

Jos 6:16 And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests blew with the trumpets, Joshua said unto the people, Shout; for the LORD hath given you the city.

Amo 3:6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it?

And who is it that brings this judgment? The Body of Christ (The Elect) are the saviors that come upon Mt. Esau to judge the nations within and without (Obe 1:21) in the times appointed. As Steve’s Awesome Hands series has so adeptly taught us, the Body of Christ, are the hands of the Lord through which He does His work on the earth including being His Battle Axe.

Joh 14:12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

Men represent trees in Scripture (Mar 8:24). The trees of the field shall clap their hands is part of the process of salvation coming to all men. These trees smite the hands of the wicked by clapping of their hands and they also clap their hands with joy for the coming forth of Christ as He is gloried and raised up within us. The war of the flesh versus the spirit in our day of judgment creates the sounds of salvation which is the clapping of the hands of the trees of the field. This is all accomplished by the Word, the fire of God, working in our heavens.

Isa 55:11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

Isa 55:12 For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.

Isa 55:13 Instead of the thorn shall come up the fir tree, and instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree: and it shall be to the LORD for a name, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.

Clapping of hands is the blowing of the trumpet and bringing the Lord’s judgment to those prepared to hear it. That is what saves us and how we learn righteousness as we have reminded ourselves constantly in this series.

1Co 11:31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.

1Co 11:32 But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.

Christ comes only for the sick and the lame, not to those without a need for a spiritual physician. Coming to see that the bruise of the flesh king within us will not be healed is essential for this process to complete its course. As bad as all of this sounds, it is truly the prerequisite for the coming of Christ within us the SECOND time for salvation without sin.

Mat 9:12 But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.

The clapping of hands are the praises of men who have had their cries for deliverance from their enemies answered by the Lord from heaven.

Psa 98:8 Let the floods (River) clap their hands: let the hills be joyful together

Psa 98:9 Before the LORD; for he cometh to judge the earth: with righteousness shall he judge the world, and the people with equity.

This Psalm speaks to the trees of the field that clapping having been delivered by the implanted Word that is bringing forth lasting fruit unto the Lord. With the King of Assyria within us no longer working (slumbering), then the conflict with the Lord’s work in bringing forth fruit can move forward speedily within us as we mature having experienced both good and evil. When Christ in us sees Satan as lightning falling we return with great joy.

Luk 10:17 And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.

And here is what that produces in us in increasing quantity.

Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

Gal 5:23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Conclusion

This entire prophecy has been about the burden we all carry being carnally minded, being created subject to vanity, and seeking to serve the Lord. This must be burned out of us through many trials and tribulations for us to find the true rest that remains for the people of God (Heb 4:9).

The natural enmity of the carnal mind will war against the law of Christ in our minds (Rom 7:23). It requires Christ coming a second time to “Nineveh”, the great city and capital of Assyrian and Babylon WITHIN us (Luke 17:21). Until Christ brings this war in our heavens via the fiery judgments (Rev 12), we are incapable of obeying the Lord in Truth and in spirit. There is a process of spiritual progression and maturity required to implant the Lord’s ways into our hearts and minds. Only once the field is planted with good seed, will it bear fruit for the Lord and this prophecy explains this in its three short chapters. The titles of the eleven studies illustrate this progression yet there was no conscious design on my part to do so.

  1. The Burden of Nineveh – Nah 1:1 The burden of Nineveh
  2. He rebukes the sea
  3. No more of thy name be sown
  4. Then Shall the Wicked Be Revealed
  5. The goodness of God brings repentance
  6. Devouring the devourers
  7. Behold I am against thee
  8. Shaking by a Mighty Wind
  9. You are yet Carnal
  10. The Great Grasshoppers
  11. The trees of the field clap their hands

The study taking eleven parts is all the Lord’s work yet that is very telling also as it confirms the prophecy. Eleven representing the destruction of the perfection of the flesh (10) and being one short of the number twelve which represents our spiritual foundation. So when our flesh is as good as it can be; it is still no good to God and it must be destroyed (Mar 10:18, Ecc 7:20). The Law is good but still a shadow of good things to come.

Of course being remade and our achievement of salvation is all an earnest deposit of the fullness to come. So we are not physically being killed but what must take place is our carnal mindedness needs to be destroyed [we are being led as lambs to the slaughter]. The carnal mindset is death and this must change for us to be of service to the Lord, even in down payment form.

Rom 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

Rom 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

Rom 8:8 So then they that are in the flesh (“yet carnal”) cannot please God.

The carnal mind makes living and abiding in the Word so burdensome and so frustrating.  We complain, gripe, and go on emotional roller coasters as we respond to the scourging grace the Lord is injecting into our lives. These fiery trials are a huge burden to carry if we think about them and respond to them as a natural man would. The burden is heavy and the yoke is truly oppressive when we strive with our Lord and remain outside of the true rest before we surrender the ghost in down payment form and submit to Christ. There is great gain to be had when we are content with what the Lord is doing in our lives (1 Ti 6:6). When our obedience is complete we lack nothing.

Thankfully nothing is impossible for our Lord and He is causing chastening grace that always increases when sin abounds (Rom 5:20). And as we progress more and more onward to maturity, being dragged there, the yoke becomes easy and the burden is truly light.

Mat 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

Mat 11:30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

So we all learn patience in waiting for these things to be fulfilled in our heavens. We have faith [a gift] but we also are being taught patience and to watch and pray continuously.

Pro 10:25 As the whirlwind passeth, so is the wicked no more: but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.

Luk 21:33 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.

Luk 21:34 And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.

Surely this study and these words are not comforting to our flesh and carnal mind. But they are a comfort to the NEW MAN and if we recall Study #2, we will remember that Nahum’s name means to comfort. So I hope this study has stirred me and you up to be more vigilant about our walk and bring a measure of patience to endure what the Lord has written in each of our books (Psa 139:16) from the foundation of the world, our days before they even were.

Nahum Part 10 – The Great Grasshopper

(click title to print, view or download in PDF)

by Pete Wilson

Last week we reviewed the spiritual significance of cankerworms and their eventual transformation into moths. After the study there was great input in the discussion to follow that led me to retrace some steps and cover some additional points and have that in the study record for the benefit of all who may be led to read. Romans 1:20 and the truth of how the physical manifestation speaks to the spiritual reality is absolutely true and is utterly amazing when one begins to drill into specifics. So we are going to regroup around these two verses that reference cankerworms and moths before we move on.

Nah 3:15 There shall the fire devour thee; the sword shall cut thee off, it shall eat thee up like the cankerworm: make thyself many as the cankerworm, make thyself many as the locusts.

Nah 3:16 Thou hast multiplied thy merchants above the stars of heaven: the cankerworm spoileth, and flieth away.

The Lord of course is working all things and causes these cankerworms to manifest and multiply within us which represent our works of the flesh and our fornication with this world. We saw in an earlier study the word WORMS [H8438 “tola”] is the same word translated as “scarlet and crimson” and represents the mixture of red (old man Adam) and blue (new man Christ). Similar to the discussion thread on the email list regarding Jonah and the gourd; the Lord works this evil for our good and the end result will be the exposing of our self-exalted state so the Lord can burn it out of us.

Here is a synopsis of the “fall season cankerworm” (there is also a spring season) that reminds us what cankerworms do and their various stages of metamorphosis. Remember we are the trees of the field that bring forth vegetation for the Lord.

The fall cankerworm has four life stages, egg, caterpillar, pupa, moth (adult). The adult male is a small brown moth and the adult female grey, with reduced wings, and unable to fly…… Fall cankerworm tiny caterpillars emerge in the early spring when leaves just begin to open (around late February) and feed immediately. As a tree’s young leaves and buds are destroyed, plants may respond with new buds and leaves. Cankerworms generally don’t kill trees, but this defoliation can drain a tree of some of its energy and may make it weaker.

This is exactly what spiritual cankerworms do to the trees of the field. They eat our vegetation and weaken us and make us weary. This is the burden of Nineveh, the very title of this prophecy.  This is the heavy burden and oppressive yoke we bear until our baptism is complete and we enter into the true rest that remains for the people of God “is was and will be” every day of our lives.

The final stage of a cankerworm is a moth that flies away and that is exactly what Nahum prophesies regarding these cankerworms in our heavens in our day of the Lord. They spoil our vegetation we bring forth for the Lord, then fly away and still defile our heavens as we progress through our baptism. These spiritual moths while flying in our heavens do what moths do which is to eat and make holes in our spiritual clothing. This exposes our nakedness, the very purpose the Lord causing us to err from His ways and the moths defiling our garments. The saints of God will not be wearing defiled holey garments; they will be wearing the fine linen given them by enduring through this baptism. As Christ tells us, moths bring corruption versus the purity and cleanliness required by God. When we seek riches, which means knowledge that feeds the pride of our flesh, then those riches will corrupt and bring out the moths.  The moths will corrupt and spoil our wedding garments. The moths defile the treasures we lay up upon our earth.  Yet  we are told to lay up riches IN HEAVEN where the moth’s cannot corrupt them.

Mat 6:19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

Mat 6:20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

Iron is associated with the works of the flesh and our carnal state of mind. It is not usable in the service of God.   When combined with water (the Word) iron will rust and corrode much like the moths do to clothing. We are told these things to impart spiritual understanding.  The Word of God is pure and undefiled. When we are yet carnal, we will mix deep seated beliefs and thoughts that have the appearance of wisdom yet they exalt themselves against the Word. This makes us the adulterers that James says we are while already in the Body of Christ (Jam 4:4). The Lord uses the moths to expose us and eat up our garments of self-righteousness (Isa 64:6) and show us the vanity of using our supposedly godliness for gain.

Psa 39:11 When thou with rebukes dost correct man for iniquity, thou makest his beauty to consume away like a moth: surely every man is vanity. Selah.

Moths are similar to the locusts which are false doctrines and lies that blot out the Truth but they do not swarm and are found in far fewer numbers. But as we have been discussing the moths represent a latter point in our maturity in the Lord and manifest when Christ brings the fire needed to make us into doers of the Word after having come into knowledge of the Truth.  Moths are the mixing of Truth with our carnal reasoning and this too must be purged via the progressive judgments of the Lord.

The dream is truly one. Moths and worms are all part of the same process of transformation.  This is our personal metamorphosis from a carnal sinful man to a spirit led man of Christ bearing fruit and maintaining good works.

Isa 51:7 Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings.

Isa 51:8 For the moth shall eat them up like a garment, and the worm shall eat them like wool: but my righteousness shall be forever, and my salvation from generation to generation.

Moths easily creep in and defile our garments when we do not keep watch. Those in the Body with pure doctrines must be vigilant to work out their own salvation with fear and trembling and be like Paul and examine ourselves lest we be found a castaway. Only those with undefiled will walk in white wearing the white raiment of Christ. We must not forget how we have gotten to this point; we must hold fast our confession and DO THE WORD.

Rev 3:3 Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.

Rev 3:4 Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy.

Rev 3:5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

The beast is still sitting on our throne when these moths are defiling and eating our garments.

The man that shows up at this feast not wearing the proper wedding garment (Mat 22:12) is not permitted to stay eating at the Lord’s Table. We must endure to the end and if we are not given to endure our circumcision (in earnest deposit), we will be made uncircumcision. Having been given such great knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of God, it is easy for us to not be aware of the worms and moths that can grow unheeded in our heavens and spoil our fruit for God. We best take heed not only to our doctrine but examine our walk often.

2Co 13:5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?

The Lord uses the worms to expose our sinfulness and to humble us via judgment. We are covered with worms, they are our spiritual garments when we are puffed up in our hearts and self-exalted in the congregation of the saints.

Isa 14:11 Thy pomp is brought down to the grave, and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee.

Isa 14:12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

Isa 14:13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:

Bringing us to our wits end is the work of the worms in their various forms (Job 7:3-5). The cankerworm and the grasshoppers represent the later stages of our judgment necessary to complete the work of the Lord and mature us. When we come to see our inability to be holy and righteous on our own, then and only then does the Lord steps in to save us.

Isa 41:14 Fear not, thou worm Jacob, and ye men of Israel; I will help thee, saith the LORD, and thy redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.

Isa 41:15 Behold, I will make thee a new sharp threshing instrument having teeth: thou shalt thresh the mountains, and beat them small, and shalt make the hills as chaff.

The work of these spiritual bugs is to impede our walk and expose our nakedness which will be used of the Lord to humble us at the appointed times. We have to see that we truly are an “abomination of desolation” defiling the temple of God when we in our self-righteousness are sitting on the throne of our hearts. The Lord hardens our hearts through them to bring the trials of our faith and to teach us patience and usher in our own transformation or transfiguration.

2 Corinthians 3:18: But we all with unveiled face, beholding and reflecting like a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord Spirit.

With a more complete view of the cankerworm life cycle and spiritual purpose, let’s pick back up with Nahum 3:17 to complete today’s study.

Nah 3:17 Thy crowned are as the locusts, and thy captains as the great grasshoppers, which camp in the hedges in the cold day, but when the sun ariseth they flee away, and their place is not known where they are.

Interesting that again, this word for crowned is only found in Scripture this one time.

H4502, minnezâr, min-ez-awr’

From H5144; a prince: – crowned.

Total KJV occurrences: 1

The two horned religious beast of Revelation 13:11 that looks like a “lamb yet speaks like a dragon” is God’s Elect when we are crowned with our deep seated carnal beliefs and ways. The Lord uses all of this to cause us to separate ourselves from Him and to set up idols in our own heart that are then used to deceive us and hold us in bonds awaiting our day of the Lord (Eze 14:7-9). These idols are the captains or the thoughts that rule and reign over us until the fire comes to purge the heavens within.

Locusts in high numbers (swarms) blot out the Truth and keep us from seeing or understanding the Scriptures. In our days in the apostate churches that represent orthodoxy, the locusts are very many (Rev 9:16) and totally blot out the Truth and eat up any vegetation that may grow.

Exo 10:4 Else, if thou refuse to let my people go, behold, tomorrow will I bring the locusts into thy coast:
Exo 10:5 And they shall cover the face of the earth, that one cannot be able to see the earth: and they shall eat the residue of that which is escaped, which remaineth unto you from the hail, and shall eat every tree which groweth for you out of the field:

So as adulterers and adulteresses (Jam 4:4) in the Body of Christ, we have made our princes that govern in our mind in this self-righteous state as the locusts. It is the same event just at a later time with differing details. Standing in true doctrine, we still mix truth with lies, allowing a little leaven to leaven the whole lump. We have not guarded or kept the gateways into our mind pure and undefiled. We ARE NOT KEEPING WATCH.

Pro 4:23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life

Mat 26:41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

The carnal mind left to its innate natural devices will readily depart from following the Lord.  The carnal mind will quickly appoint that beast as the captain (the chief grasshopper) and we will unwittingly be led back into the ways of the world and not obey the command to be separated FROM this world within and without. Inwardly this is our tiring of the trials and tribulation of walking a narrow road. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak yet we must endure to yield the fruit unto salvation.

Gal 6:9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

Our old man aka carnal mind, will seek to hide from this blistering sun and get away from the heat, it is a natural carnal reaction of ALL FLESH. So it is within us even as we move on to maturity.

Num 14:2 And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness!

Num 14:3 And wherefore hath the LORD brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt?

Num 14:4 And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.

This is how we can easily turn grace into lasciviousness even after knowing true doctrine and tasting of the heavenly gifts. The deceitfulness of our sin knows no bounds. We are given many examples of Israel falling down and being destroyed for our admonition today so we will learn this admonishment well. We must take heed and beware we do not depart from the living God. That is why we have a BODY and have this frequent fellowship because we must exhort one another daily and we are told why.

Heb 3:10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.

Heb 3:11 So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)

Heb 3:12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.

Heb 3:13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

And if there is one takeaway I want all of us to get from the Nahum study it is this: We must endure; we must strive to the very end. Nobody has arrived.

Heb 3:14 For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end;

The Lord often repeats His Words to us to get our attention and ensure we know the importance of His commandments. Here in Nahum 3:17 we get a double back to back repeated use of the Hebrew word “gob” that is translated as grasshopper.

Nah 3:17  Thy crowned are as the locusts, and thy captains as the great H1462 grasshoppers H1462, which camp in the hedges in the cold day, but when the sun ariseth they flee away, and their place is not known where they are.

The grasshoppers are of great significance and we best take heed and be watchmen on the wall examining ourselves for anything that operates in the kingdom of God within us that is contrary to sound doctrine or the Lord’s commands. Grasshoppers and locusts are nearly identical in the physical but there are some distinct differences.

The main difference is locusts swarm in huge numbers whereas grasshoppers are independent and loners. Locust also has the ability to cover much greater territory where grasshoppers are more localized. This fits well with the progression of our judgment. We have millions of locusts that swarm and block out the sun (Truth) when we are in Babylon and spending time under the influences of the world and its ways. But as we enter the Body, come into sound doctrine, the swarms are gone, we have Truth but we are yet carnal and immature and the Lord still has some things to deal with us and expose deep seated lies and carnal mindedness within us.

Rev 2:4 Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.

Rev 2:5 Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.

Let’s recall the origins and use of this word for grasshopper. The word translated as grasshopper in Nahum is H1462 or “gob”. It is only found three times in Scripture twice in Nahum 3:17 and also in Amos 7:1

Total KJV Occurrences: 3

grasshoppers, 2

Amo_7:1, Nah_3:17

great, 1

Nah_3:17 (2)

Here is how H1462 is used in context in Amos 7:1.

Amo 7:1 Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me; and, behold, he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and, lo, it was the latter growth after the king’s mowings.

So again we see the grasshoppers on the scene later in the maturation process than the locusts. This is something we live out while in the Body of Christ. So we see the grasshoppers within eating the green grass and consuming the immature crop of the land within us.

Amo 7:2  And it came to pass, that when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord GOD, forgive, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.

Amos discusses with the Lord how Jacob (you and me) shall be saved and given to prosper. Then the Lord reveals the method and shows Amos the plumb line.  The Law of Christ is the measuring stick and holding us to that measure via judgment is how Jacob will be prospered and these high places we are making in our heavens with these grasshoppers will be made desolate.

Amo 7:8  And the LORD said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more:

Amo 7:9  And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.

Amos 7:1 is merely a continuation of Amos 6 and we see the Lord declaring judgment on those that are in Zion but are at ease. We know Zion represents the Body of Christ and we can see it is those yet carnal that trust in the mountain of the flesh (Samaria) to whom this judgment is declared.

Amo 6:1 Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!

We also saw in Part 9 that the root word for H1462 links the grasshoppers to the word husbandmen.

H1461, gûb, goob

A primitive root; to dig: – husbandman.

Total KJV occurrences: 1

This root is only used this once place in 2 King 25:12 and is translated as husbandman

2Ki 25:12 But the captain of the guard left of the poor of the land to be vinedressers and husbandmen [H1461].

A husbandman is simply an old name for one whose business is to cultivate the ground.  Husbandmen dig in the ground and the earth to tend fields and bring forth crops. The word “husbandmen” like all words of Scripture can either be positive or negative. God’s Elect are the Lord’s husbandmen, we are being given the keys to the kingdom of God and are given to tend the fields and bring in the harvest and to drink of the wine and eat of the grapes.

The story of Uzziah, a king of Israel, is a story of us who also are given a love for husbandry.

2Ch 26:9 Moreover Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the corner gate, and at the valley gate, and at the turning of the wall, and fortified them.

2Ch 26:10 Also he built towers in the desert, and digged many wells: for he had much cattle, both in the low country, and in the plains: husbandmen also, and vine dressers in the mountains, and in Carmel: for he loved husbandry.

But we get drunk with the vine of the vineyard. We wax fat of the cattle, the dream is one. We get puffed up initially in our work and we use our godliness for gain.

2Ch 26:15 And he made in Jerusalem engines, invented by cunning men, to be on the towers and upon the bulwarks, to shoot arrows and great stones withal. And his name spread far abroad; for he was marvellously helped, till he was strong.

When we are weak, only then are we strong (2 Cor 12:10). But knowledge puffs up and the moths do indeed come and corrupt those riches.

2Ch 26:16 But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction: for he transgressed against the LORD his God, and went into the temple of the LORD to burn incense upon the altar of incense.

This first rejected anointed king within us will be completely cut off in the day of the Nahum prophesy and we will see the end of the matter next week in our last verse Lord willing.

It is in these later stages of maturity, where we are walking with sound doctrine in the Body, when the baptism of fire comes to us as Nahum describes. It is here that we have the law of Christ written on our hearts. That comes living through and enduring these fiery trials and having the new man come forth from the death and destruction of our carnal mind.

Jer 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.

Grasshoppers represent the idols of our hearts, the deep seated beliefs that are not many yet are giants of our carnality and false doctrines that need to be purged. They hide out in hedges and keep out of the sun because the Sun of Righteousness (Mal 4:2) would quickly expose them.  When the Sun rises within us, when Christ is resurrected with power, then the grasshoppers flee away and are no longer seen.

Having come through the flood already, we must still come through the fire. It will be like both the days of Noah (water) and the days of LOT (the fire). We are Noah and we too will begin to be “a husbandmen” and plant a vineyard as we wait further instruction and fiery judgment from the Lord as our grasshoppers and our inward nakedness is exposed by the fiery light of the Word.

Gen 9:20 And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard:

Gen 9:21 And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent.

The crowned locusts are also the crown of pride that is worn by us, the drunkards of Ephraim, as our outward beauty fades away as these moths, worms and grasshoppers expose our sin and self-righteousness and eat up our clothing and devour the crop.

Isa 28:1 Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a fading flower, which are on the head of the fat valleys of them that are overcome with wine!

God’s Elect are these shameful husbandmen who have wasted the fields and allowed these grasshoppers to invade the land and spoil. God’s Elect do this when we seek after our own gain and not that of our brothers and sisters.

Joe 1:10 The field is wasted, the land mourneth; for the corn is wasted: the new wine is dried up, the oil languisheth.

Joe 1:11 Be ye ashamed, O ye husbandmen; howl, O ye vinedressers, for the wheat and for the barley; because the harvest of the field is perished.

Jesus Christ gave us some parables that speak of this same process likened to a husbandman tending to a vineyard of His Master. We will review the Luke version for brevity sake.

Luk 20:9 Then began he to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time.

Our earth is the vineyard and we as a babe in Christ are the husbandmen tasked with tending to the Lord’s crop.

Luk 20:10 And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty.

In due season, i.e. harvest time, the Lord sends His servants to us asking for the fruit but we do violence to the Word and send the servant away empty as we ourselves have been emptied by these insects and have no lasting fruit to give. The process repeats itself three times with the same result, no fruit and our mistreating His servants (not obeying God 1 Joh 5:3).

Luk 20:11 And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty.

Luk 20:12 And again he sent a third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out.

Finally the Lord sends Christ and His Army that brings the baptism of fire. Certainly we will fear Him when we see Him?

Luk 20:13 Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him.

But no, we will go beyond what is written and reason in our heavens that we can keep the old man alive and still honor God and reap the inheritance. We can cloth ourselves, call ourselves by His Name and we get to eat at His altar we will reason.

Luk 20:14 But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.

So we kill Christ within us and cast lots for His clothing through the lies and vanity of being carnally minded.

Luk 20:15 So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them?

But thankfully, the Lord Himself comes with flaming vengeance to render recompense and take back His temple and His vineyard. The first husbandman is destroyed as are the grasshoppers in the Lord’s fury for His Temple.

Luk 20:16 He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid.

Spiritual grasshoppers hide from the bright sun and hide out in the hedges, the cold places on the mountain. This is where we drift in the Body, we don’t maintain fervent fellowship and we just want to warm ourselves by the fire that is “Christ”. When these great grasshoppers are manifesting in our walk we will seek to separate from the Body because we cannot stand the heat. The spoken Word of Truth is uncomfortable when we harbor ungodly thoughts and actions. Our natural reaction is to begin to separate because “the heat of the sun is uncomfortable”. When the heat of the Word rises up, we as carnal men flee away from that heat.

Isa 33:3 At the noise of the tumult the people fled; at the lifting up of thyself the nations were scattered.

Isa 33:4 And your spoil shall be gathered like the gathering of the caterpiller: as the running to and fro of locusts shall he run upon them.

It is what the carnal man/mind does when the Sun is shining the heat of “that day” upon us.  As the tables are turned, these devourers are devoured, the spoilers are spoiled. In the same way the locusts and caterpillars gathered unto us, we shall be gathered back.

Conclusion

It takes a repeated process of falling down and being scourged by the Lord’s grace to purify our heavens. The king of the bottomless pit and his sibling is our beast and neither easily departs and this is all by design of our Maker. When salvation has come to the house of the Lord, there will be no doubt who has done this marvelous thing. Like Jonah we learn this the hard way and are brought to our wits end in the belly of the beast.

Jon 2:9 But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.

Jon 2:10 And the LORD spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.

And like Jonah who was sent to prophesy to Nineveh as was Nahum, we too will be dealt with for our self-righteousness. The Lord will use worms, moths, caterpillars, locusts and grasshoppers in their varied metamorphosis states to accomplish His fury within us and usher in our salvation. This process is, was and will be until the third day and we are in resurrected bodies.

I hope you have been edified and coming to see the Lord’s continued work in us via judgment well after we have come to the knowledge of Truth. The fact is our being dragged to Christ is only the beginning of our day of the Lord not the end. That process of cutting off the old and purifying the heavens and the earth continues to the last day we shed these clay vessels.  Paul’s Words have taken on greater significance to me as we abide in the fire that is Christ the Word.

2Ti 4:5 But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.

2Ti 4:7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:

2Ti 4:8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

And Paul goes on to tell us that not many have remained faithful, even Demas and Titus had forsaken the Body and only Luke is still with him in the one mind of Christ. All this bad stuff we have been studying must be endured. We must keep the faith all the way to the end.

Mat 24:13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

Next week the Book will be complete as we cover the final two verses.

Nahum Part 9 – You Are Yet Carnal

(click Post Title to view, download or print in PDF)

by Pete Wilson

We are going to learn about cankerworms and grasshoppers in this study and learn their association and role of us (God’s Elect) in our immature, puffed up, attention seeking state, hearing but not doing the Word. This is our yet carnal Corinthian state where we have been given the things of Christ but have not yet exercised them through the trials to learn to be a doer of the Word and produce the righteousness of the Lord, the fine white linen. We are still waiting for this baptism of fire to work its work in us.

1Co 3:3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?

1Co 1:7 So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ:

We always put these verses on those carnal people over there in the orthodox harlot churches and forget all about “Mystery Babylon” WITHIN. This is the Babylon that is inside of us, it is stamped on the harlot’s head, whose head is the head of the beast (Rev 17:13), that we all are as carnal men and women.

Rev 17:5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.

Yet we know our baptism with fire, the second coming of Christ for salvation apart from sin (Heb 9:28), will not come until we see ourselves for what we truly are in these vessels of clay.

2Th 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

2Th 2:4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

I suspect Paul had a hard time getting this point across to the church at Thessalonica as he infers they have been told of this before and should remember as it applies to the Body of Christ.

2Th 2:5 Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?

This state of being is the epitome of our worshipping the image of the carnal and fleshly beast that all men are (Ecc 3:18). As foolish as it seems to the natural man, the way the Lord saves us from our sins, is to first cause us to err from His ways (Isa 63:17) which means to sin. He then uses that occasion to bring judgment to our heavens and earth by way of the implanted Word as the end of our carnal age has come. Those of us that do not obey the Word which is ALL MEN, are judged in “that day” which is also known as the last day or as the sum of thy Word tells us, the end of the age or AION.

Joh 12:48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

We are taught by experience by which a loving Father chastens us via the fiery judgments of His Word when we miss the mark and sin. Another way of saying this is: “our own wickedness is used to correct us” (Jer 2:19). The Lord manifests evil from the rod of the Assyrian or Babylonian king within us to wreak havoc to the hypocritical nation we have become hearing but not doing (1 Ki 10:5-6). To become like our Lord we must learn good and evil and the only way we learn is through experience. That experience is obtained by going through this judgment that must come first on the house of the Lord.

Gen 3:22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

Heb 5:14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

We ended Nahum Part 8 with verse thirteen and we need to keep the same context as we continue this week’s study.

Nah 3:13 Behold, thy people in the midst of thee are women: the gates of thy land shall be set wide open unto thine enemies: the fire shall devour thy bars.

Fire has “suddenly” come to devour the strongholds (bars) of the flesh. These bars represent our carnality. These bars are the chains that keep us in bondage to our flesh and the principles of this world being carnal babes in Christ. We show up in the Body as babes despite what we may think otherwise and we have a lot of burning out to do to become the mature man in Christ.

Galatians 4:3 Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world:

This is where we sit in the shadow of death, being carnally minded (Rom 8:6) bound by these bars of the flesh and being both a rebel and a hypocrite and not obeying the Lord. We also saw last week the shaking of the fig trees by a mighty wind that represents our immaturity in the Lord, being a babe and being yet carnal. The lasting fruit that remains is not produced until after we endure through our baptism with fire.

Heb 12:11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

Christ chooses us and appears to us to teach us righteousness and make us into fruit producing trees whose fruit can easily withstand the storms of life (Joh 15:16). Disciples indeed are those who produce such fruit but to be such a disciple we must continue, which means to abide in His Word and not our carnal mindedness i.e. DYING TO SELF.

Joh 8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue [Doer of the Word] in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

When our vessel of clay is being remade, the entire foundations on which we stand are being completely done over. Instead of trusting in the carnal mind and the principles of the world we are taught to walk only by faith in the Word and to not even think above what is written (1 Cor 4:6). This is the baptism of fire that brings forth a new man and it is accomplished on the Lord’s coming this second time to Nineveh.

As we live through the prophecy of this book of Nahum, our faith will be growing and we are beginning to acknowledge in deed and in Word that the Lord is really the Lord and apart from Him we can do nothing. Here are the four verses we will cover today. It will take another segment to complete the final two verses of the book and provide a summary and conclusion to this very interesting and detailed prophecy we all live by at the appointed times.

Nah 3:14 Draw thee waters for the siege, fortify thy strong holds: go into clay, and tread the morter, make strong the brickkiln.

Nah 3:17 Thy crowned are as the locusts, and thy captains as the great grasshoppers, which camp in the hedges in the cold day, but when the sun ariseth they flee away, and their place is not known where they are.

Doing these studies has given me a much greater appreciation for patience and how we are made to wait on Him to accomplish His work in us. We all want to be delivered fully right now but the Lord makes us wait.

Psa 40:1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.

Psa 40:2 He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.

Rom 8:22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.

Rom 8:23 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.

This study is focused on the less attractive side of God’s Word, the judgments of the old man and our carnal way of life. Nobody’s flesh is going to like this process it is indeed torment.   It pains us when we fall down and still sin, missing the mark of the higher calling. As Ezekiel tells us, this is the mark of a godly man that groans and sighs over the abominations committed in the city within us.

Eze 9:4 And the LORD said unto him, Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof.

Yet we press on, we get right back up (Pro 26:16) because we are not saved by our performance, we are saved by HOPE. So before we get into the study verses, I wanted to give some encouragement because I know we all struggle with our failures and we want to be delivered of all of our enemies immediately.

Rom 8:24 For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?

Heb 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

We must wait on salvation because otherwise we get puffed up even more than we already will. The carnal thoughts and lust we wage war against in our members, are only delivered into our hands little by little lest the beast that “was, is not and yet is” would take credit for it (Exo 23:29-30). At the heart of this process is us coming to see our truly wretched position without Christ working in us. Coming to the conclusion we truly are vile and wicked and being able to say what Paul quipped “oh wretched man that I am”, takes many trials and falling down into sin, erring from the Lord’s ways.

Enduring through this war, the process of our judgment and being tormented is how the old man is decreased and the new man is increased. This is the patience of saints and how we are caused to keep His commandments as our judgment progresses.

Rev 14:11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

Rev 14:12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

Let’s look now at the individual verses.

Nah 3:14 Draw thee waters for the siege, fortify thy strong holds: go into clay, and tread the morter, make strong the brickkiln.

The fury of the Lord is accomplished via the remaking of the marred vessel of clay that was created for the very purpose of being destroyed and remade (Jer 18:4, Rom 8:20). This remaking of the vessel from the one lump of clay is exactly what we are studying in Nahum.  First, the vessel of dishonor and then the remaking of us into the vessel of honor from the SAME lump (Isa 64:8, Rom 9:21).

As in the days of Noah, the end comes by a flood sweeping away the wicked and leaving only the righteous behind. Nahum is calling for the waters of the siege to be prepared.

Gen 6:17 And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and everything that is in the earth shall die.

The water and the fire are both needed to reshape and reform clay and is likened to the days of Noah and also the days of Lot.   The baptism of water washes away the false doctrines and carnality and the baptism of fire makes us doers of the Word.

Luk 17:26  And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man:

Luk 17:27  They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.

Luk 17:28 Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded;

Luk 17:29 But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.

Luk 17:30 Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.

These are baptisms of both water and fire yet they are the One Baptism. The washing of the temple/us by the Word and the fire and brimstone represented by our baptism in fire.

Eph 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

Mat 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

The Lord uses and sends His Body to be the saviors of the world (Obe 1:21) that speak His Word (Jer 5:14) doing the greater works of God (Joh 14:12). “Christ” is sent to the clay vessels prepared ahead of time (the lost sheep of Israel) and this brings the hail that causes the overflowing of the waters that consume the old man.

Isa 28:2 Behold, the Lord hath a mighty and strong one, which as a tempest of hail and a destroying storm, as a flood of mighty waters overflowing, shall cast down to the earth with the hand.

The house of the Lord must be built from within us as we are His temple (1 Cor 3:17). This requires the clay to be treaded with water and fire (heat).  The old walls must be demolished and everything is to be made new (Rev 21:5). There will be nobody found to repair the broken walls of “spiritual Babylon”, that great mother of harlots” within.  When the fire comes, this wound is indeed grievous and the old man shall not recover.

Eze 22:28 And her prophets have daubed them with untempered morter, seeing vanity, and divining lies unto them, saying, Thus saith the Lord GOD, when the LORD hath not spoken.

Eze 22:29 The people of the land have used oppression, and exercised robbery, and have vexed the poor and needy: yea, they have oppressed the stranger wrongfully.

Eze 22:30 And I sought for a man among them that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.

The walls of the true temple are built by the Israel of God as the story of Nehemiah illustrates in type and shadow. The waste places are rebuilt by the flesh of Jesus Christ, His Body. Jesus Christ is the one who draws the water from His well of living waters. These waters are drawn by the preaching of His Elect, who are His ambassadors (Rom 10:15). Out of our bellies will flow these waters and through them will salvation come to the Gentiles within and without at the appointed times.

Joh 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

The spoken Word will knock down and make breaches in the fleshly bars and walls we previously built in our false security thinking we have already arrived. These breaches enable the enemy to come in and be used of the Lord to destroy the wicked within us before they are in turn destroyed.

Lam 4:11 The LORD hath accomplished his fury; he hath poured out his fierce anger, and hath kindled a fire in Zion, and it hath devoured the foundations thereof.

Lam 4:12  he kings of the earth, and all the inhabitants of the world, would not have believed that the adversary and the enemy should have entered into the gates of Jerusalem.

Christ both wounds and heals, He destroys and He rebuilds.

Isa 58:11 And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.

Isa 58:12 And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.

The word for bricklin has its root the Hebrew word “Laban” which is H3835 which has this definition in Strong’s.

A primitive root; to be (or become) white; also (as denominative from H3843) to make bricks: – make brick, be (made, make) white (-r).

The fields are indeed white and ripe for the harvest at this stage of our walk; Christ has come with fire and with an army or laborers within OURSELVES and within the Body of Christ and the reaping of the harvest is underway.

Joh 4:35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.

Nah 3:15 There shall the fire devour thee; the sword shall cut thee off, it shall eat thee up like the cankerworm: make thyself many as the cankerworm, make thyself many as the locusts.

Cankerworms are voracious eating insects that start out as caterpillars and through a four step process morph into voracious eating moths that fly away as adults. This definition of natural cankerworms gives a good overview of what “spiritual cankerworms” also do.

“Spring and fall cankerworms are long-standing forest and shade-tree pests that defoliate forests. Both complete their life cycle by developing in four distinct phases: eggs, larvae (caterpillar), pupae (cocoon) and adults. Cankerworms are defoliating pests of many tree species especially hardwoods.”

The word translated cankerworm is the Strong’s word H3218 “yeleq”. It is always either translated as cankerworm or as caterpillars, which is one of the forms a cankerworm has during its life cycle.

caterpillars, 3

Psa_105:34, Jer_51:14, Jer_51:27

We can quickly see the commonality in how the Lord uses this word. The context of these worms or caterpillars is always the judgment of Babylon and the great harlot within us. Here we are again puffed up, in need of nothing thinking our godliness is a means for gain. The Lord fills us with these caterpillars that are used to bring the fire of the sword upon us.

Jer 51:13 O thou that dwellest upon many waters, abundant in treasures, thine end is come, and the measure of thy covetousness.

Jer 51:14 The LORD of hosts hath sworn by himself, saying, Surely I will fill [fill Adam] thee with men, as with caterpillers; and they shall lift up a shout against thee.

We saw in an earlier segment the word for “scarlet” is also used for worms and tell us of this raging war between the flesh and spirit, the red of Adam versus the blue of Christ.

Cankerworms and caterpillars bring the tainting of our thoughts by the mixing of the two and this is when we are living through the torment in the presence of the Lamb (Rev 14:11). We see the three stages of judgment represented also in the Words of the Lord in Mark chapter nine applying to the cleansing of our way of life, represented by our hands, our feet and our eyes. It is always better to cut off or pluck out the offending limb rather than stay in this “eternal” or better said age abiding torment. Thrice the Lord tells us this about the war raging in our heavens in the days of our judgment.

Mar 9:45 And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

Mar 9:46 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

The fire will keep burning, the strife and inner torment will continue until this wood, OUR CARNALITY is burned out of us.

Pro 26:20 Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.

Jer 5:14 Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.

Consistent with the theme of our immaturity, we are not gathering fruit or drinking wine of the increase of our work for the Lord when it is mixed with our fleshly and carnal ways. The cankerworms worms are eating it up!

Deu 28:39 Thou shalt plant vineyards, and dress them, but shalt neither drink of the wine, nor gather the grapes; for the worms shall eat them.

Psa 78:46 He gave also their increase unto the caterpiller, and their labour unto the locust.

Joe 1:4 That which the palmerworm hath left hath 1) the locust eaten; and that which the locust hath left hath 2) the cankerworm eaten; and that which the cankerworm hath left hath 3) the caterpiller eaten

I saw something very interesting I had not seen before in preparing this study. Three is the number for spiritual completion in Scripture. The locusts, the cankerworm and the caterpillar all represent differing degrees of our judgment and our spiritual completion. Specifically the cankerworm and the caterpillar are a later and more mature judgment of the Lord that we live out after already knowing true doctrine and already have come of out the Orthodox churches. The Lord’s people that come out of her are the ones that get a double portion of judgment (Rev 18:6, Jer 16:18)

We are already in the Body of Christ, the church of the living God, when we live thru this second baptism of fire. We take the Truth and work the earth ourselves being yet carnal [Cain], and it is the fruit of that increase we are initially unable to reap. We, like Noah, having come thru the flood get drunk from the fruit of our own vineyard.  We all are made drunkards as we work the earth.

Gen 9:20 And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard:

Gen 9:21 And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent.

Joe 1:5 Awake, ye drunkards, and weep; and howl, all ye drinkers of wine, because of the new wine; for it is cut off from your mouth.

We come into the Body yet carnal and immature, untested by the fire. I am making no judgment on anyone in particular in the Body except for my own self.

The cankerworms spoil the crop and vegetation brought forth for the Lord and later on the caterpillars eat even what is left over. These three stages of voracious insects devouring the crop is 1) our time in Orthodoxy or Babylon, 2) our carnal Corinthian days in the Body coming behind in no gift and 3) our day of the Lord that brings us to maturity and a perfect man in Christ that bears fruit that remains.

Trees represent men in Scripture and we will see a big nugget next week in closing the book of  Nahum, about “the trees of the field and the clapping of our hands”. Being untested in the fire, our green leaves that bud forth (mixture of heavenly blue and leprous yellow) will not remain but will fade away like a leaf.

Jer 8:13 I will surely consume them, saith the LORD: there shall be no grapes on the vine, nor figs on the fig tree, and the leaf shall fade; and the things that I have given them shall pass away from them.

Isa 1:30 For ye shall be as an oak whose leaf fadeth, and as a garden that hath no water.

Contrast this situation with the mature man in Christ that has been proven by trials having endured through the fiery trials.

Psa 1:3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

Rev 22:2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

So while locust represents lies and false doctrines that block out the truth and keep us is in spiritual darkness, before we are given eyes to see and ears to hear; the cankerworms and the caterpillars do something similar but at a more mature stage of our walk. They keep us fornicating with the world in our heavens, mixing our new founded truth with deep seated carnal reasoning. Cankerworms are carnal thoughts, lies and false doctrines even “spiritual chariots” we ride on that result in and consume our immature work in the Lord.

Thankfully these spoilers themselves end up getting spoiled. The devourers are themselves devoured after the Lord has used them to accomplish His purposes. We looked some at this mystery in Part six entitled the “Devouring the Devourers” (Jer 30:16, Pro 22:22-23). The carnal mind and the head of the beast is being cut off. The devourer will be devoured as salvation comes to the house of the Lord and we grow fruit that actually remains.

Mal 3:11 And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts.

Let’s look at one more nugget here in verse fifteen of the two sides of the sword of the Lord.

Nah 3:15 There shall the fire devour thee; the sword shall cut thee off, it shall eat thee up like the cankerworm: make thyself many [H3513] as the cankerworm, make thyself many [H3513] as the locusts.

The phrase found twice in this verse “make thyself many” comes from this Hebrew word H3513 and that translation only done here in Nahum really obscures the meaning as seen below in looking at the KJC.

It really has the meaning of heavy or heaviness in the negative and honor and glorified in the positive. Since we are dealing with a negative context, i.e. the judgment of the old man, here are some verses speaking on that context that use this same word and here it is “heavy”. The cankerworms and locusts are very many and the totality of these lies causes us to miss the mark and sin. This makes us “heavy” spiritually speaking.

Isa 24:20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy [H3513] upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.

Isa 6:10 Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy [H3513], and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.

Multiplying the merchants above the stars of heaven, is putting the lies above truth and failing to keep watch over the flock of the Lord. Like these insects which eat physical crops, we quickly multiply our carnal reasoning’s in this war to keep the old man alive and the beast sitting on the throne of our hearts. Seeking to save our life is a sure way to lose out on eternal life [knowing Christ and His Father]. But natural reasoning beasts will do anything, even making their own bread and making their own clothing to wrest away the judgment of God.

Isa 4:1 And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach.

Knowing the Truth but not yet doing the Truth, we sit down at the wedding feast but we are not yet properly clothed and have some torment to endure in outer darkness. Not just anyone can come to the feast; we must be of the very few called, chosen AND FAITHFUL (Rev 17:14) and be given to endure through this fiery process.

Mat 22:12 And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.

Mat 22:13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Mat 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen.

The same word “kabab” was in last week’s study as the word honorable in a positive way.

Nah 3:10 Yet was she carried away, she went into captivity: her young children also were dashed in pieces at the top of all the streets: and they cast lots for her honourable [H3513] men, and all her great men were bound in chains.

What this shows us is the other side of the two edged sword. The process of the old man being made “heavy” and multiplying lies and wearing defiled self- righteous garments is how the Lord is glorified IN US and how we are made to be His Honorable men. Here is yet another use of this same word kabab often translated as “glorify”.

Isa 24:15 Wherefore glorify [H3513] ye the LORD in the fires, even the name of the LORD God of Israel in the isles of the sea.

Nah 3:16 Thou hast multiplied thy merchants above the stars of heaven: the cankerworm spoileth, and flieth away.

He who exalts himself shall be humbled and this will be you and me and all men at their appointed time. The pride of man likes to be seen, heard or thought of highly by other men.   We all will do this even if secretly in our own mind and we will be humbled by the chopping down of our prideful tree.

Isa 14:13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:

Yet Christ says His Word and our doing it will not make us popular. Woe unto us when all men speak well of us! The worst harlots and offenders are God’s sons who are judged to a higher standard since they have been given much and thus much more shall be expected.  There is a reason Hosea was told to go marry a harlot!  Remember the Bible is written to and about the people of God, the Body of Christ. Here is what James has to say to us, the church of God, knowing the Truth but not obeying the Truth.

Jas 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

Jas 4:5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?

The Lord response to our sin is “to crank up grace”, the furnace of affliction.

Jas 4:6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

Knowledge of the true doctrines of Christ will inevitably puff us up. The pride of man cannot help but to exalt himself based on these riches and treasures. But such a man cannot enter the kingdom of God. We first learn these verses as applying to physical money but they apply so much more broadly. Seeking to be seen as righteous in the congregation is seeking riches.

Mat 19:24 And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

1Ti 6:9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.

The cankerworms are given us for judgment to burn these lusts out of us by eating our harvest and spoiling the carnal Corinthian. In due time we will cease from seeking after such folly. We all go through the learning and maturing process and that is through this furnace of affliction. With new ears and eyes, we will seek riches as that bring glory to the carnally minded. We will dig for knowledge in the vineyard and naturally think our godliness is a means for gain and we will wax rich.   This is the merchandising the harlot Mystery Babylon is insidiously good at doing.

Rev 18:3 For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.

Nah 3:4 Because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the wellfavoured harlot, the mistress of witchcrafts, that selleth nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts.

Our goal once in the truth should be contentment and to wait upon the Lord who in due time will lift us up as His will has determined. He is the HEAD of His own church!

1Ti 6:6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.

1Ti 6:8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.

The cankerworms once hatched and after eating up the crop, will multiply greatly and take flight in our heavens and will continue to impede our maturation. These must be purged from the heavens and these flyers must themselves be devoured. The Lord will humble us and burn out of us the desire to be rich and be wise in our own eyes. Our carnal mind will get the best of us when we seek riches to bring glory to ourselves. There is an interesting link between seeking riches and flying high like an eagle toward heaven.

Pro 23:4 Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.

Pro 23:5 Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

I had wanted so badly to get through verse 17 this week and complete the review of the insects in one study, but we must wait until next week to cover this verse and the final two in the Book of Nahum.

Nah 3:17 Thy crowned are as the locusts, and thy captains as the great grasshoppers, which camp in the hedges in the cold day, but when the sun ariseth they flee away, and their place is not known where they are.

We will see that grasshoppers are similar but not exactly the same bug as locusts and are indeed different than cankerworms. This applies in the natural as well as the spiritual as I hope to make clear in the next study. Just to plant a seed that will be covered in more detail let’s quickly review the definition and use of the word translated as grasshoppers and its root word.

The word translated as grasshopper in Nahum is H1462 or “gob”. It is only found three times in Scripture twice in Nahum 3:17 and also in Amos 7:1

Total KJV Occurrences: 3

grasshoppers, 2

Amo_7:1, Nah_3:17

great, 1

Nah_3:17 (2)

Amo 7:1 Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me; and, behold, he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and, lo, it was the latter growth after the king’s mowings.

The latter growth represents our more mature stages in our day of the Lord we will study out next week.  But the word for grasshopper has as its root H1461.  This is a real nugget. Here is the root word and its usage only one time in all of Scripture.

So there is a real gem in seeing that grasshoppers tie directly to being a husbandmen. Here is the definition of a husbandman from Easton’s Bible Dictionary.

Husbandman (NOUN): One whose business it is to cultivate the ground. It was one of the first occupations, and was esteemed most honourable ( Genesis 9:20 Genesis 26:12 Genesis 26:14 37:7 , etc.). All the Hebrews, except those engaged in religious services, were husbandmen.

So the word “husbandmen” like all words of Scripture can be either positive or negative. God’s Elect are the Lord’s husbandmen, we are being given the keys to the kingdom of God and are given to tend the fields and bring in the harvest and to drink of the wine and eat of the grapes.

We will see more confirmation that this time in our walk, the enduring of the baptism of fire, comes when we are in the Body as a yet carnal Corinthian coming behind in no gifts. Here we know true doctrine yet still cannot apply it consistently and are often mixing with the world and having a hard time coming out and being separated and touching not the unclean within specifically. We have a form of godliness but without the power thereof.

Grasshoppers represent our time of being puffed up, an eagle high in the tree, where we lust for knowledge and seek the riches of the kingdom ahead of being a doer of the Word that is obedient to the Lord’s commandments.

With that teaser, we will end this installment of the Book of Nahum. Lord willing, we will be able to complete the prophecy next week in ten parts.

Nahum Part 8 – Shaken By A Mighty Wind

(click above to view, download or print as PDF)

by Pete Wilson

We ended last week with verse seven where our despicable spiritual condition has been made known and we have become a gazing stock.

Nah 3:6 And I will cast abominable filth upon thee, and make thee vile, and will set thee as a gazingstock.

Nah 3:7 And it shall come to pass, that all they that look upon thee shall flee from thee, and say, Nineveh is laid waste: who will bemoan her? whence shall I seek comforters for thee?

When we see our despicable spiritual condition, we flee to the mountains to hide out and try to escape the wrath that has befallen our old man and carnal way of life. Everything we knew or thought we knew is turned on its head in this ongoing “is, was and will be” process until we come to the mature man in Christ. The mighty wind, the Spirit of God, is sweeping across the face of the earth and its waters (Gen 1:2-3) as “light is called out of darkness”.

Rev 6:13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.

Rev 6:14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.

Rev 6:15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;

We saw the call to “stand stand” and repent of our wicked ways in Nahum 2:8 but we are not standing at first. We flee to the safety of the crowd but the Lord searches us out.

Jer 46:20 Egypt is like a very fair heifer, but destruction cometh; it cometh out of the north.

Jer 46:21 Also her hired men are in the midst of her like fatted bullocks; for they also are turned back, and are fled away together: they did not stand, because the day of their calamity was come upon them, and the time of their visitation.

The words of Nahum speak of the same judgment, the same process by which Jesus Christ is revealed in us. The end of the old and ushering in of the new comes with this war and it comes by a flood of lies and false words that come against the house we first build on the sand of our self-righteousness when we hear but do not do the Word.

Luk 6:49  But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

Yet thankfully the Lord comes the second time and the day of the Lord is at hand and judgment is now on the house of God. It is vengeance for His Temple (1 Pet 4:17, 1 Cor 3:16). Here are the verses for today which will allow us to finish the Nahum study in nine installments and render a conclusion of the entire book next week Lord willing.

Nah 3:8 Art thou better than populous No, that was situate among the rivers, that had the waters round about it, whose rampart was the sea, and her wall was from the sea?

Nah 3:9 Ethiopia and Egypt were her strength, and it was infinite; Put and Lubim were thy helpers.

Nah 3:10 Yet was she carried away, she went into captivity: her young children also were dashed in pieces at the top of all the streets: and they cast lots for her honourable men, and all her great men were bound in chains.

Nah 3:11 Thou also shalt be drunken: thou shalt be hid, thou also shalt seek strength because of the enemy.

Nah 3:12 All thy strong holds shall be like fig trees with the firstripe figs: if they be shaken, they shall even fall into the mouth of the eater.

Nah 3:13 Behold, thy people in the midst of thee are women: the gates of thy land shall be set wide open unto thine enemies: the fire shall devour thy bars.

Let us also remind ourselves that the wisdom of Christ is foolishness to the natural “carnal” man (1 Cor 2:14). All this wrath coming against us and our old man and his wicked ways is actually the blessing of the Lord.

Rev 1:3 Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.

No man enters into Christ any other way. The writing of the law of Christ on our hearts, comes not by us inviting Christ into our hearts, but by the Lord bringing fiery trials to us and pouring out wrath upon our wicked carnal ways.

Rev 15:8 And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God, and from his power; and no man was able to enter into the temple, till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled.

1Pe 4:12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:

No man is able to obey the Lord until the Lord causes it to happen and that only happens by us DOING (living through) these very judgments we are reading about.

Eze 36:27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

Being brought to our wits ends requires all that we thought we knew to be shown for what it is i.e. (lies). We must go through this raging sea of our carnal mind in search of the truth in order for Christ to appear in the cloud that is “His Christ”.

Luk 21:22 For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled….

Luk 21:25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;

Luk 21:26 Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.

Luk 21:27 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

Luk 21:28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

And how are we redeemed? We need not speculate ( Exo 6:6, Mat 19:28, etc).

Isa 1:27 Zion shall be redeemed with judgment, and her converts with righteousness.

Here is our first verse to dig a little deeper.

Nah 3:8 (NKJV) Are you better than No Amon That was situated by the River, That had the waters around her, Whose rampart was the sea, Whose wall was the sea?

Despite what the thoughts of a carnal mind will tell us, there is no safety in numbers in escaping from God’s wrath against sin. Following the crowd is what flesh does to feel safe but it is no defense for our disobedience and the wrath of God that comes in our day of the Lord.

Exo 23:2 Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou speak in a cause to decline after many to wrest judgment:

Wresting judgment, the very thing that redeems us and blesses the new man, is what flesh will always think is right.

Isa 31:1 Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help; and stay on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the LORD!

The mind of the whore of Babylon is to trust in the safety of numbers and the billions they deceive by the two hundred million lies (Rev 9:16). But as we have seen time and time again it is a false peace that will suddenly be shattered when Christ comes to make war and brings a sword.

1Th 5:3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape

Mat 10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

Jer 51:8 Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed: howl for her; take balm for her pain, if so be she may be healed.

The sea is the wall of flesh that we trust in. We may know true doctrine but when the rubber meets the road we being yet carnal fall back and rely on the instincts of the flesh and all that we learn in Egypt. That wall falls as we saw in earlier studies because it is built with untampered mortar of slime, our filthy self-righteous works (Eze 13:10, Isa 64:6) and not the Word of Truth.

Nahum exposes this false security by asking if we are better than those in No Ammon which represents those that trust in the reasoning’s of the carnal mind and not the Word. The harlot like the people of No, sits on many waters which represent the flesh of all of mankind.

Rev 17:15 And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.

The strength of the harlot is the flesh and the carnal mind. The waters of the sea, which represent the flesh, are seemingly bottomless and this is where the seed of our father, the devil, lives deep in the DNA of these marred vessels of clay.

Rev 9:11 And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.

Only the Lord can draw out Leviathan and bring salvation by slaying the great dragon within.

Job 41:1 Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down

Isa 27:1 In that day the LORD with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea.

The Lord of course causes all things, even our days appointed in Nineveh and even putting Leviathan into this sea of the flesh to play. Seeing the works of the Lord, the wonder in the deep is very liberating.

Psa 104:24 O LORD, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches.

Psa 104:25 So is this great and wide sea, wherein are things creeping innumerable, both small and great beasts.

Psa 104:26 There go the ships: there is that leviathan, whom thou hast made to play therein.

Psa 107:24 These see the works of the LORD, and his wonders in the deep.

Our strength or rampart is the sea when spiritually we are in Nineveh. This word rampart comes from a word Steven reviewed in his Proverbs 31 (Link at end) study that means host or army.

H2426, chêyl    chêl, khale, khale

A collateral form of H2428; an army; also (by analogy) an intrenchment: – army, bulwark, host, + poor, rampart, trench, wall.

Total KJV occurrences: 8

The root of which comes from H2428 meaning a force and also includes the word translated as virtuous. As that study shows, we see that this force, this army, is associated with the word “pain” and in particular the context of childbirth, patience and coming through the whirlwind of  judgement.

Nah 3:9 Ethiopia and Egypt were her strength, And it was boundless; Put and Lubim were your helpers.

God’s people are called to truly be separate. Yet it takes us much travailing to learn these truths and become obedient. Our linkage to Egypt and the ways of the world run very deep.

No Amon (Ammon) is a place on the Nile River, also called Thebes, which was said to be the capital of Upper Egypt. These locations named here all pertain back to the land of Ham, Noah’s son, who was cursed for exposing the nakedness of his father.

Psa 105:23 Israel also came into Egypt; and Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham.

We first come see the power of the Lord in the land of Ham.

Psa 105:27 They shewed his signs among them, and wonders in the land of Ham.

Ethiopia comes from the Hebrew word Cush who was the son of Ham. Put is also a son of Ham and is what is translated as Libya in modern English (Gen 10:6). The word Lubim also ties to Ham and to Libya and is defined in Strong’s as follows.

H3864,  lûbı̂y   lûbbı̂y, loo-bee’, loob-bee’

Partial from a name probably derived from an unused root meaning to thirst, that is, a dry region; apparently a Libyan or inhabitant of interior Africa (only in plural): – Lubim (-s), Libyans.

I live in Africa and I will attest it is dry here. But in the spiritual, dryness refers to the absence of God’s rain, the doctrines and dew that drip from the heavens and water the earth. Dryness brings famine, parches the land and hinders the crops and trees from bearing fruit in seasons. Land that is dry is easily set ablaze and burned by fire as I have witnessed my first summer in Africa. These realities in the natural tell us in type and shadow how it works in the spiritual.

Rom 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

Via Nahum, the Lord is speaking to His Elect here in the whirlwind of our judgment. Now is that judgment on the house of God. Nahum is comparing us to the history of No Amon which was a very populated place in the world at that time. The references do not make much sense on the surface. How is a place surrounded by water, situated next to “the River” as some translations define it, given strength and helped by these four named places that are considered dry regions and devoid of green things?

The Lord destroys the old man within us, saving the remnant, Christ in us. He does this by turning those that trust in Egypt and its idols over to the king of Babylon within us. This is the occasion that brings judgment through the fire that is in our heavens.

Jer 46:25 The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saith; Behold, I will punish the multitude of No, and Pharaoh, and Egypt, with their gods, and their kings; even Pharaoh, and all them that trust in him:

Jer 46:26 And I will deliver them into the hand of those that seek their lives, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of his servants: and afterward it shall be inhabited, as in the days of old, saith the LORD.

The two hundred million lies of our carnally minded father the devil (Joh 8:44), are the innumerable grasshoppers/ locusts that cause us to err from the Lord’s ways and then endure wrath as we endure the death that is the wages of sin.

Jer 46:22 The voice thereof shall go like a serpent; for they shall march with an army, and come against her with axes, as hewers of wood.

Jer 46:23 They shall cut down her forest, saith the LORD, though it cannot be searched; because they are more than the grasshoppers, and are innumerable

Here is a second witness to how this multitude of No is cutoff in that day.

Eze 30:10 Thus saith the Lord GOD; I will also make the multitude of Egypt to cease by the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon.

Eze 30:14 And I will make Pathros desolate, and will set fire in Zoan, and will execute judgments in No.

Eze 30:15 And I will pour my fury upon Sin, the strength of Egypt; and I will cut off the multitude of No.

When we see Jerusalem surrounded by armies of  flesh, when we see our innate helpless state incapable of obeying God after having fallen down seven times, then salvation has come.

Today is the day of our salvation. We best not receive the grace of God in vain but step up and separate from the heathen and unbelieving. This applies within and without.

2Co 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

Here is our next verses

Nah 3:10 Yet she was carried away, She went into captivity; Her young children also were dashed to pieces At the head of every street; They cast lots for her honorable men, And all her great men were bound in chains.

Nah 3:11 Thou also shalt be drunken: thou shalt be hid, thou also shalt seek strength because of the enemy.

As the harlot wife of the Lord, when the Lord turns us over to the Assyrians within, the rod of His anger (Isa 10:5), we are bound in captivity to our carnality and fleshly way of life. We mix the old and the new wine and get drunk in seeking strength from the enemy who is yet thriving in our heavens. We are unable to deliver ourselves. This is how our own wickedness corrects us (Jer 2:19).

Isa 10:24 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD of hosts, O my people that dwellest in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian: he shall smite thee with a rod, and shall lift up his staff against thee, after the manner of Egypt.

The pride of man is very stubborn and it takes this baptism with fire to burn it out of us. Having Truth but not doing Truth is thinking we have already arrived (Phil 3:12-13).

Isa 28:1 Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a fading flower, which are on the head of the fat valleys of them that are overcome with wine!

After receiving the Truth until we are proven with trials, we will wax fat on the things of the Lord. But vengeance is still to come for the Temple of the Lord.

Deu 32:15 But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked: thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou art covered with fatness; then he forsook God which made him, and lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation.

Deu 32:16 They provoked him to jealousy with strange gods, with abominations provoked they him to anger.

But our self-righteous efforts of covering our sin and disobedience will fail; it will not keep us safe. We won’t be able to hide in the day of the Lord’s vengeance.

1Co 4:5 Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God

Being carnal and trusting in Egypt and the world is not believing on Christ. There is darkness still to be brought to the light and burned out of us.

Joh 12:46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.

Here is a great verse that we should use often to measure ourselves and examine our faith.

1Jn 2:9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.

The clay vessels we are will be dashed to pieces in the day of our remaking from a marred vessel of clay into the son of the living God (Jer 18:3-4).

Psa 2:9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.

Living by every word God spoke ensures we will not take heed to these warnings and will all will first be disobedient before we are caused to be obedient. That is how one learns [is, was and will be]! So we too will be taken captive in Nineveh by the harlot. We will be in bondage waiting for the armies of Christ to come deliver us on the Mt. of Esau (Obe 1:21, Luk 21:24) and the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled in our walk.

The immature must be tried in the fire, this furnace of affliction to become the mature man in Christ.

Hos 13:16 Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up.

In this immature still carnal and “marred” condition, we cast lots for Christ so we can wear His garments and not be righteously judged. This is how we twist the Word of God and pervert it, making our own bread (Isa 4:1) to take away our judgment.

Luk 23:34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

This is what we do, doing the opposite of being a watchman and we enable strangers to come in and take over the land. This is “buying and selling” we do in making merchandise in the Temple of God. It is all one and the same event.

Oba 1:11 In the day that thou stoodest on the other side, in the day that the strangers carried away captive his forces, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou wast as one of them.

Joe 3:3 And they have cast lots for my people; and have given a boy for an harlot, and sold a girl for wine, that they might drink.

Yet the Lord will have none of it and will not put up with this defilement of His Name forever. His righteousness is only acquired by enduring through the very fiery judgments we are studying.

Rev 19:8 And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.

Isa 26:9 With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early: for when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.

Overcomers will have had their old man and carnal mindedness dashed to pieces by the revelation of Jesus Christ within them.

Rev 2:26 (NKJV) And he who overcomes, and keeps My works until the end, to him I will give power over the nations—

Rev 2:27 ‘HE SHALL RULE THEM WITH A ROD OF IRON; THEY SHALL BE DASHED TO PIECES LIKE THE POTTER’S VESSELS’— as I also have received from My Father;

Our next verse 12 brings to mind the events of Revelation Chapter Six.

Nah 3:12 All thy strong holds shall be like fig trees with the firstripe figs: if they be shaken, they shall even fall into the mouth of the eater.

The Elect of God upon whom judgment first falls are the first fruits unto the Lord (Jam 1:18, Rom 8:23). Fig trees are fruit trees and represent men and in the negative sense the immature in Christ. Immature fruit including untimely figs and sucklings, will not enter into the kingdom of God. Such fruit must be destroyed and the immature must mature by this process.

Mat 24:19 And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!

Fig trees are green and represent the mixture of leprous yellow and heavenly blue.

Son 2:13 The fig tree putteth forth her green figs, and the vines with the tender grape give a good smell. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.

When we hold onto the strength of the world the fruit that is born for the Lord will not withstand the trial of our faith. There is not yet enough root and that tree and its fruit will wither in the heat of the day (Mat 13:6).

When the sixth seal is (was and will be) be coming upon us, the fruit produced by us being adulterers mixing the things of God with worldly things, will easily be shaken off the tree.

Rev 6:12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;

Rev 6:13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.

Our immature fruit, the figs, will fall to the earth and be devoured by the devourer as Nahum here proclaims when our day of the Lord is at hand. Our enemies will in due time become food for us, the bread of life as we mature in Christ via this process. This Nahum passage brings to mind Samson’s riddle which foretells of this mystery and the strange workings of the Lord.

Jdg 14:14 And he said unto them, Out of the eater came forth meat, and out of the strong came forth sweetness. And they could not in three days expound the riddle.

The meat represents the good that the Lord brings about from the evil and rebellion He works first within us for the counsel of His will. It is through our death, the death of the old man and our carnal ways of life, that bread is produced for the new man (Num 14:9).

The fig tree represents us and the fruit we bear for God in our immature state. We have not been tried by the fire. When tried in the fire, we will fail at first as this is how we are humbled in due time. The harvest comes in the fall so when we see the fruit appearing on our tree in our “summer” then we know judgment is nigh at hand.

Luk 21:29 And he spake to them a parable; Behold the fig tree, and all the trees;

Luk 21:30 When they now shoot forth, ye see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at hand.

Luk 21:31 So likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand. [that is entered only by judgment]

Like John we do not understand it until we can look back and see it in our walk and life (Rev 1:12). As we saw in Part seven, the Lord making us vile is how we are made to fade away as a leaf which is the same as a fig falling from its tree.

Isa 34:4 And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree.

Isa 34:5 For my sword shall be bathed in heaven: behold, it shall come down upon Idumea, and upon the people of my curse, to judgment.

Being hearers only and not doers, we are not founded on the Rock but instead rely upon the strength of our flesh, our carnal mind and the lies of the great harlot for our salvation. But the Lord will come once again to shake all things and identify what cannot be shaken.

Heb 12:25 See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven:

Heb 12:26 Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.

Heb 12:27 And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.

I find it interesting that when we come to see our sin (chief of sinners) our first inclination is to cover ourselves with the works of our hands (the flesh) yet this is using fig leaves.

Gen 3:7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

There are many parables about figs and fig trees, both positive and negative that we cannot possibly look at in this study. But we are on the negative focus here, the judgment of the great whore resulting in the beast and false prophet being tossed into the lake of fire.

Jer 5:17 And they shall eat up thine harvest, and thy bread, which thy sons and thy daughters should eat: they shall eat up thy flocks and thine herds: they shall eat up thy vines and thy fig trees: they shall impoverish thy fenced cities, wherein thou trustedst, with the sword.

Our time to reap what we have previously sown has come.

Hos 2:12 And I will destroy her vines and her fig trees, whereof she hath said, These are my rewards that my lovers have given me: and I will make them a forest, and the beasts of the field shall eat them.

Hos 2:13 And I will visit upon her the days of Baalim, wherein she burned incense to them, and she decked herself with her earrings and her jewels, and she went after her lovers, and forgat me, saith the LORD.

Here is our last verse for today.

Nah 3:13 Behold, thy people in the midst of thee are women: the gates of thy land shall be set wide open unto thine enemies: the fire shall devour thy bars.

Being hearers but not yet doers of the Word, the very thing that brings this baptism by fire; we are a woman playing the harlot. Casting lots for garments we are spiritual whores.

Eze 16:15 But thou didst trust in thine own beauty, and playedst the harlot because of thy renown, and pouredst out thy fornications on every one that passed by; his it was.

Eze 16:16 And of thy garments thou didst take, and deckedst thy high places with divers colours, and playedst the harlot thereupon: the like things shall not come, neither shall it be so

Eze 16:17 Thou hast also taken thy fair jewels of my gold and of my silver, which I had given thee, and madest to thyself images of men, and didst commit whoredom with them,

The locusts that bring darkness out of the bottomless pit within us are the lies and false doctrines of the carnal mind. The Lord turns us over to them as His way of bringing us the point of zero trust in our flesh (Php 3:3). We don’t go down easily as we have seen. James writes to the elect warning them of this continued adultery and fornicating with the world.

Jas 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

When we are turned over to the king of Babylon for the destruction of our flesh, our gates are opened in our heavens (mind) for us to be devoured by the lies and false doctrines of the world and Babylon. Being an enemy of God and knowing the Lord puts all His enemies under His feet, explains the painful process we are enduring. All enemies include death and most assuredly include our carnal mindedness which is death.

1Co 15:25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.

1Co 15:26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

Rom 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

Women also represent churches which we all are indeed FIRST as the harlot wife of the Lord.  As Mike’s study of the Book of Revelation showed, the relationship between a man and a woman is a type of the relationship between Christ and His church. The reason Nahum says those in the midst of us are woman is the same reason we are given these words from Revelation 9. Here we begin to be tormented in seeking death to our sins but not finding it because of the locusts that appear as women.

Rev 9:6 And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.

Rev 9:7 And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men.

Rev 9:8 And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions.

Women have long hair which gives the appearance of a wife subject to her husband, Christ, and His Word. But in reality we are still under the rule of another king named Abaddon and Apollyon (Rev 9:11), we are the adulterers that James says we are. The period of chastening and scourging that Nahum is speaking about is the same five months referenced also in Rev 9:10.

The Lord uses this occasion to bring fire within that devours the bars of flesh and copper that we trust in. We are being refined seven times in this furnace of affliction (Psa 12:6, Isa 48:10).

The end of the matter is we will not trust in our flesh or carnal mind anymore. We will live without walls and without these iron bars, trusting only in the WORD having no confidence in our flesh or the flesh of any man.

Eze 38:11 And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates,

Php 3:3 For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.

Next week we hope to complete the study of Nahum and cover the final six verses. It will be a continuation of the judgment of the great whore and the burning up of the beast and false prophet within. Unlike the superficial healing of our wounded head in Nineveh, the rising of the SUN within us, grievously wounds the head of the beast from which there will be no healing.

Here is a preview of next week and the very last verse of Nahum.

Nah 3:19 There is no healing of thy bruise; thy wound is grievous: all that hear the bruit of thee shall clap the hands over thee: for upon whom hath not thy wickedness passed continually?

Here are the verses for today’s study.

Nah 3:1 Woe to the bloody city! it is all full of lies and robbery; the prey departeth not;

Nah 3:2 The noise of a whip, and the noise of the rattling of the wheels, and of the pransing horses, and of the jumping chariots.

Nah 3:3 The horseman lifteth up both the bright sword and the glittering spear: and there is a multitude of slain, and a great number of carcases; and there is none end of their corpses; they stumble upon their corpses:

Nah 3:4 Because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the wellfavoured harlot, the mistress of witchcrafts, that selleth nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts.

Nah 3:5 Behold, I am against thee, saith the LORD of hosts; and I will discover thy skirts upon thy face, and I will shew the nations thy nakedness, and the kingdoms thy shame.

A time comes when the Lord declares vengeance for His Temple, which temple we are (1 Co 3:17). He is jealous for His elect, the very apple of His eye. War has been declared, judgment is, was and will be coming in heaven. The devourers, the carnal mind and its millions of thoughts and doctrines (Rev 9:16) that go against the Truth of the Word, are now themselves being devoured by the coming of Christ the second time for salvation without sin (Heb 9:28).

We will see the phrase “Behold, I am against thee” again in Nahum 3:5 after seeing it as our ending verse from last week.

Nah 2:13 Behold, I am against thee, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will burn her chariots in the smoke, and the sword shall devour thy young lions: and I will cut off thy prey from the earth, and the voice of thy messengers shall no more be heard.

“The Christ”, the roaring “Lion of the tribe of Judah” comes for vengeance to devour that which previously devoured. The carnal mind and worldly ways of the old man are being destroyed as salvation increasingly comes upon us via this process.

The phrase “Behold, I am against thee” as KJV translated is found fourteen times in Scripture. Three times in Jeremiah, nine times in Ezekiel and two times here in Nahum. Numbers have a profound meaning in Scripture. The number fourteen stands for our “spiritual progression” (see links to studies below) and is associated with us transgressing from the old man to the mature new man in Christ. This is directly associated with the shedding of our carnal ways.

The genealogy of Christ given to us in Matthew has great significance on the number fourteen and links to this process of judgment [spiritual significance of the number 3].

Mat 1:17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.

Christ is the alpha and the omega, the first and the last and all points in between (Rev 22:13).  Part of living by every word is coming to understand at our core that “in Him we have our very being” (Act 17:28). We can do nothing apart from Him. We have the Lord coming against us and our wicked ways fourteen symbolic times to work righteousness in us via progressive judgment.  This is how we progress spiritually in these clay vessels. Nobody has arrived.

Php 3:12 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.
Php 3:13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
Php 3:14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

When our day of the Lord has come and Christ is bringing our baptism with fire, the old man is not going to be having a good time. He IS being tormented in the presence of the Lamb and that is how our beastly nature is destroyed (Rev 14:10-12). The enmity purposefully put there by the Lord will be taken out of the way by this process that will spiritually complete and mature Christ in us.

Nah 3:1 Woe to the bloody city! it is all full of lies and robbery; the prey departeth not

We do violence in the city of God, His Temple, when we pervert the Word with false doctrines and steal from the Lord to bring glory to ourselves. Being carnally minded is death (Rom 8:6) and when we are yet carnal and under the influence of the lies of the adversary, there is plenty of prey for Satan and his messengers to feed upon as that is the serpent’s food (Gen 3:14).

Our adversary goes up and down, to and fro the whole earth (which earth we are) seeking whom they may devour.

Job 1:7 And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

1Pe 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

It is our carnal reasoning’s by which death comes and we do violence and kill the prophets of the Lord within. It is being tossed to and fro by every wind of carnal doctrine and REASONING that causes us to lie in darkness and the snare of the wicked one (Eph 4:14). Without the gift of faith and the coming of Christ, we truly are murderers and thieves of our father, the devil (Joh 8:44).  We all crucify the Lord of glory in our carnal ignorance.

Act 4:26 The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ.

As we mature and Christ increases we will stand more by faith in the power of God and less so in the wisdom of men, the things we learn our whole life.  The wisdom of God is a mystery, it is hidden from all but a precious few yet even God’s Elect first shed  the blood of our Lord.

1Co 2:7  But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:

1Co 2:8  Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

Lord willing we will not ever literally kill anyone in the flesh. So how is it that we are guilty of all this bloodshed and rightly charged as a murderer and a thief? It is by our fornication with the world and making of idols that we shed “blood in the city”.

Eze 22:2 Now, thou son of man, wilt thou judge, wilt thou judge the bloody city? yea, thou shalt shew her all her abominations.

Eze 22:3 Then say thou, Thus saith the Lord GOD, The city sheddeth blood in the midst of it, that her time may come, and maketh idols against herself to defile herself.

Eze 22:4 Thou art become guilty in thy blood that thou hast shed; and hast defiled thyself in thine idols which thou hast made; and thou hast caused thy days to draw near, and art come even unto thy years: therefore have I made thee a reproach unto the heathen, and a mocking to all countries.

It is our having respect of persons and blaming men and contending with the Lord, denying His sovereignty that we shed the blood of others. Even being angry at our brother or sister is considered murder in the Lord’s eyes.

1Jn 3:15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.

We all first hate the doctrines of Christ and those that bring them to us. Enmity between the two is all the Lord’s design (Rom 8:20, Gen 3:15). We kill Christ and His servants with our carnal reasoning in our attempts to keep the beast alive on God’s throne.

Mat 21:33 Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country:

Mat 21:34 And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it.

Mat 21:35 And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another.

Mat 21:36 Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them likewise.

Mat 21:37 But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son.

Mat 21:38 But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance.

Mat 21:39 And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him.

It is in spiritual Nineveh (Babylon) where we find this great inward city full of the blood of the prophets and saints.

Rev 18:24 And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.

Being hearers but not doers of the Word, we do this violence against our neighbor and to God’s sons. We claim to honor the Lord but we kill His prophets including the new man within, the man-child, with violence.

We, the people of true Israel, are guilty and it will be recompensed upon us via the death of our old man, dying daily with Christ.

Luk 11:49 Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute:

Luk 11:50 That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation;

Luk 11:51 From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, which perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation.

We will seek the death of these thoughts and cry out unto the Lord who will in due time bring deliverance but only after the process of showing us our wickedness and teaching us good and evil. We have to drink the cup of His indignation. All nations will surely drink of this cup.

Psa 139:19 Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, ye bloody men.

Psa 139:20 For they speak against thee wickedly, and thine enemies take thy name in vain.

Psa 139:21 Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee?

Psa 139:22 I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies.

We will look at the next two verses together.

Our covenant with death (being carnally minded) is not standing in our day of the Lord. It will be disannulled and that is what these verses are showing. It is the scourge of chastening grace in our heavens (Rev 12:9) that these symbols reveal.

Isa 28:18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.

Heb 12:6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

A jealous Lord comes to us, the merchandisers in His Temple, and utterly cleans it out. The whip is a symbol of the scourging and of chastening of grace (Tit 2:12), the fiery trials (1 Pet 4:17) by which we are caused to obey Him (Ezek 36:27) and ultimately are being saved from our sins. Here we see this in the parable of Christ cleansing the temple.

Joh 2:14 And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:

Joh 2:15 And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew the tables;

Joh 2:16 And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house an house of merchandise.

Christ coming at the end of the age includes the coming of “The Christ”. This refers to His Body which are the vessels through which the Lord does the greater works of bringing salvation to all men by speaking His Word and judging all men (Joh 14:12, Mat 19:28, 1 Cor 6:2). The symbols and parable in the book of Revelation speaks of the Lord’s armies that follow their head Jesus Christ, represented by the white horse and the power of God’s Word.

Rev 19:14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.

Rev 19:15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

The huge number of carcasses and dead corpses refers to the carnal thoughts and doctrines that we stumble over being overrun by a flood of lies as we are BEING brought to our wits end. The Word will devour that which had previously devoured God’s Elect.

Rev 19:17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God;

Rev 19:18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.

The war is a war of thoughts, a war of WORDS in our heavens.

Rev 19:19 And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.

Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

The bright sword and the glittering spear will cast light upon darkness. We will see Truth and what we are in these vessels of clay. This is how the lake of fire, the judgment of the flesh comes about and comes to an end after it accomplishes what it is set out to do. The false prophet that believes and teaches things contrary to the Truth within and without will be cast into the consuming fire with the beast.

Rev 19:20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

Flesh is destroyed by the inward sword of the Lord. Our own wickedness corrects us within.

Rev 19:21 And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.

Psa 17:13 Arise, O LORD, disappoint him, cast him down: deliver my soul from the wicked, which is thy sword:

We have to be shown our wickedness and come to know why the Lord has put us through this process and these fiery trials.

Eze 39:23 And the heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity: because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so fell they all by the sword.

Eze 39:24 According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions have I done unto them, and hid my face from them.

We have covered this before but will cover it again because our continued falling short of the standard of obedience torments the heck out of God’s sons who know the Truth but are not BEING GIVEN TO OVERCOME. But OH wretched men we are and we are learning. Christ comes not to the self-righteous but to those that are in need of a physician.

Mar 2:17 When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

We have to seek death and not find it before death will come. We are enduring and suffering for three and a half days (half of our witness for Christ) until the carnal mindedness is put into a grave.

Rev 11:8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.

Rev 11:9  And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves.

The dream is indeed one. This strange process not understood in Babylon is the Lord’s way.

Psa 79:2 The dead bodies of thy servants have they given to be meat unto the fowls of the heaven, the flesh of thy saints unto the beasts of the earth.

Psa 79:3 Their blood have they shed like water round about Jerusalem; and there was none to bury them.

The vision and symbolism of these verses in Nahum closely align with the verses Joel spoke from which we can tie experiencing judgment via our lake of fire RIGHT NOW, to the coming of “The Christ”.

It is God’s elect who come as “a thief in the spiritual night” to those the Lord has prepared to hear the Words of Truth.

Joe 2:9 They shall run to and fro in the city; they shall run upon the wall, they shall climb up upon the houses; they shall enter in at the windows like a thief.

The sound of rattling wheels is the sound of the earthquake the Lord is bringing against us and our covenant with death. Here the Strong’s word H7494 that is translated as “rattling” is shown to more commonly be used to describe an earthquake and related terms.

 H7494

ra‛ash

Total KJV Occurrences: 17

earthquake, 6

rushing, 3

shaking, 3

commotion, 1

confused, 1

fierceness, 1

quaking, 1

rattling, 1 – Nah_3:2

Of course the wheels are Christ’s very elect, upon whom the judgment of God falls first in this age. The descriptions of “The Christ” given in Ezekiel in chapters one and ten confirm this (Ezek 1:13-17).

Our way of life is passing away. Wheels are a spiritual shadow of how we move, how we walk and move about, having our very being in Him. That of course is through Christ, apart from which we can do nothing (Joh 15:5).

The word translated “pransing” is only found in Scripture this one time in Nahum and has no defined Hebrew root.

H1725, dâhar, daw-har’

A primitive root; to curvet or move irregularly: – pranse.

Total KJV occurrences: 1

The word prancing almost always is used in reference with horses. I saw this as a good definition for what is being told us in Nahum with the prancing horses, the armies of Christ, on the white horse.

Definition of Prancing

  • to spring from the hind legs or move by so doing
  • to walk or move in a spirited manner:  strutalso :  to dance about

We prance when we stand up in faith to do battle. There is a time and season for everything.  There is even a time to mourn (the old man) and a time to dance which is also translated as jump here in Nahum.

Ecc 3:4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance (jump)

The jumping chariots are references to the Truth where we are now seated with Christ in the heavens. The Strong’s word H7540 translated “jumping” is also the same word translated as dancing and as skipping as in these other OT witnesses.

Psa 29:5 The voice of the LORD breaketh the cedars; yea, the LORD breaketh the cedars of Lebanon.

Psa 29:6 He maketh them also to skip like a calf; Lebanon and Sirion like a young unicorn.

1Ch 15:28 Thus all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the LORD with shouting, and with sound of the cornet, and with trumpets, and with cymbals, making a noise with psalteries and harps.

1Ch 15:29  And it came to pass, as the ark of the covenant of the LORD came to the city of David, that Michal the daughter of Saul looking out at a window saw king David dancing and playing: and she despised him in her heart.

When we are seated on the right foundation and have the covering of Christ, then we dance and jump for the Lord as we do battle with the power of the Word within us. This is bringing great disdain from the heathen within and without as we are being hated for His Name sake.

We must hear the call “to come up hither” and be seated with Christ in the heavens before we can wage this war in heaven (Eph 2:6, Rev 11:12). This is the same thing spiritually as riding in the saddle of the white horse to wage war for righteousness. The covering/garments we wear must be the “garments” made with love (obedience) that we learn from the fiery trials brought by grace. The garments of Christ’s righteousness and not that of our own works.

Son 3:9 King Solomon made himself a chariot of the wood of Lebanon.

Son 3:10 He made the pillars thereof of silver, the bottom thereof of gold, the covering of it of purple, the midst thereof being paved with love, for the daughters of Jerusalem.

The Law of Christ is written on our hearts by the trials we are enduring, by the chastening and scourging of the old man and the carnal mind.

Nah 3:6 And I will cast abominable filth upon thee, and make thee vile, and will set thee as a gazingstock.

The Lord demands purity [set apartness]. As we so often say to one another, good is the enemy of excellence. With two hundred million carnal lies, it is easy to be a harlot and to fornicate godly truths and thoughts with ungodly or worldly ones. Worshipping the beast we “buy and sell” to the nations within us by being carnal and thinking above what is written. We don’t yet appreciate this Truth and command.

1Co 4:6 And these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and to Apollos for your sakes; that ye might learn in us not to think above that which is written, that no one of you be puffed up for one against another.

As King Saul we think it is perfectly okay to disobey as long as we are doing it in the name of the Lord and claim to be sacrificing to the Lord. But this is sorcery, this is witchcraft and the Lord calls it rebellion. He does not want our sacrifices, He wants our obedience and He will get it and we will become doers of the Word by this process we are enduring.

1Sa 15:22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

1Sa 15:23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.

We must separate from the ungodly as unloving as that sounds. Coming out and being set apart is a narrow road. Yet we must not have a wife that is a whore.

Lev 21:6 They shall be holy unto their God, and not profane the name of their God: for the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and the bread of their God, they do offer: therefore they shall be holy.

Lev 21:7 They shall not take a wife that is a whore, or profane; neither shall they take a woman put away from her husband: for he is holy unto his God.

The Lord discovers our harlot skirts, our sinful and fornicating ways upon our own faces. He will show our sinfulness to all the nations within. We will now clearly begin to see who the abomination is causing desolation spoken by Daniel, the Prophet, and by Christ (Dan 11, Mat 24:15). The Lord is revealing the man of sin by exposing the harlotry within.

2Th 2:8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

Being a “gazing stock” means we will be given to see what the Lord is doing in us. The baptism of fire does not come, the day of the Lord is not until we are given to see this and our old man becomes a gazing stock. This is a wonderful thing to come to know the wonders of the deep that are the wonderful works of the Lord to the children of men from Psalm 107. We will see our merchandising the things of God which is necessary to then be caused to repent.

Psa 107:23 They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters;

Psa 107:24 These see the works of the LORD, and his wonders in the deep.

The Body of Christ are the eyes (and hears, hands, feet, etc) of the Lord. But we are being judged now and it is the eyes of Christ that will show these things to us.

Psa 11:4 The LORD is in his holy temple, the LORD’S throne is in heaven: his eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men.

Rev 4:6 And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind.

Making us “vile” in the context of Nahum 3:6 is making us fade away. We must decrease for Christ to increase. We are blessed to see our self-righteousness.

Isa 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

Isa 64:7 And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities.

Here is our final verse of this installment.

Nah 3:7 And it shall come to pass, that all they that look upon thee shall flee from thee, and say, Nineveh is laid waste: who will bemoan her? whence shall I seek comforters for thee?

Here we see the consequences of the Lord revealing what we are without Him. We have seen and our seeing our abomination and our filth. We truly are beasts and nothing good dwells in our flesh (Romans 7). Believing this is what turns us away from sin and towards Christ when we see the need for a savior and the need for repentance. We will flee and go to the mountain that is Christ and His Body when we see this and won’t bring along the self-righteous clothing we previously wore.

Mat 24:15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)

Mat 24:16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:

Mat 24:17 Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house:

Mat 24:18 Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.

The harlot will be exposed through the process of us being caused to sin and seeing ourselves as the wretched man, the chief of sinners (1 Tim 1:15). An angel of the Lord will show us these things through the words of fire they are speaking.

Rev 18:1 And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.

Rev 18:2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.

When we see the harlot in all her false splendor we flee from her, we are coming out of “spiritual Babylon”, that mother of harlots.

Rev 18:4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.

There is no comfort to be found in Nineveh/Babylon within and without. They can only heal our wounds superficially in their veiled attempts to keep the beast alive and claim to serve the Lord.

Jer 6:13 From the least to the greatest, their lives are ruled by greed. From prophets to priests, they are all frauds.

Jer 6:14 They offer superficial treatments for My people’s mortal wound. They give assurances of peace when there is no peace. (NLT)

The comfort for the new man is not in Nineveh, it is completely waste. We need to come out of her as God’s people as Job learned.

Job 16:2 I have heard many such things: miserable comforters are ye all.

Being delivered from the snare of the miry clay only comes when we are driven to our wits end and call out to the Lord and He then delivers us (Psa 40:1-3). We, like David, are being brought to this place of despair and then are crying out for deliverance.

Psa 69:14 Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink: let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters.

Psa 69:15 Let not the waterflood overflow me, neither let the deep swallow me up, and let not the pit shut her mouth upon me.

Psa 69:16 Hear me, O LORD; for thy lovingkindness is good: turn unto me according to the multitude of thy tender mercies.

Psa 69:17 And hide not thy face from thy servant; for I am in trouble: hear me speedily.

Psa 69:18 Draw nigh unto my soul, and redeem it: deliver me because of mine enemies.

Psa 69:19 Thou hast known my reproach, and my shame, and my dishonour: mine adversaries are all before thee.

Psa 69:20 Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.

Deliverance comes by the deliverers who is The Christ.  We, the true Body of Christ, are the first fruits unto the Lord. We go through our judgment now so we can in turn be used of the Lord to bring judgment but also to comfort others.

2Co 1:4 Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

Truth and faith in the Lord brings comfort. God’s elect will be those used of the Lord to judge the world in righteousness and ultimately bring comfort to all men in the times appointed for all men “to come out of Babylon” where there is not found any comforters.

Rom 11:31 Even so have these also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy.

It takes a long time, a process of being born in a clay vessel and being taught the ways of the world and its millions of lies and half-truths that pervert the ways of the Lord. It then takes a journey, a walk down a narrow road to unlearn all of that and be taught the righteousness of Jesus Christ. Nahum is speaking to this process of learning and becoming a mature man in Christ. We must be patient; we must endure knowing all things are for our sakes (2 Cor 4:15).

Having true doctrine in our heavens (in our head) is a wonderful start. Yet the old stubborn beast will resist the things of the Lord hence the need for the baptism by fire. Christ gives us some sage advice, reminding us our faith will be tried.  We will be tempted and shown that our flesh is weak. Faith without works means nothing.

Mat 26:41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

We all think we have arrived long before we ever do and we never will in these fleshly bodies.  We are admonished to be examples to others that are weak and struggling by walking this narrow road and pressing on for the prize only given to those that are finishing the race.

Mat 24:13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

Php 3:16 Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing.

Php 3:17 Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.

Devouring the Devourers

We ended last week’s study with a reminder that “all things are yours” (1 Cor 3:21) and that it has been appointed for man, beginning with the Lord’s Elect to live by every word God has spoken. So these words and events and experiences we are studying are not for someone else.  They are for you and me and ultimately all men in the appointed times. I was reminded myself of this by one of the Lord’s angels recently and it has prompted me to remind you as well. Be patient as we endure these things. Christ “is, was and will be” formed in us by these painful trials and wrath that must be endured to put away our sin. That is why these words we are studying have been given to us. Our faith should make us happy if we trust in it and not the reasoning’s of the carnal mind.

Jas 5:10 Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience.

Jas 5:11 Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.

Here are our verses for today’s study.

Nah 2:9 Take ye the spoil of silver, take the spoil of gold: for there is none end of the store and glory out of all the pleasant furniture.

Nah 2:10 She is empty, and void, and waste: and the heart melteth, and the knees smite together, and much pain is in all loins, and the faces of them all gather blackness.

Nah 2:11 Where is the dwelling of the lions, and the feedingplace of the young lions, where the lion, even the old lion, walked, and the lion’s whelp, and none made them afraid?

Nah 2:12 The lion did tear in pieces enough for his whelps, and strangled for his lionesses, and filled his holes with prey, and his dens with ravin.

Nah 2:13 Behold, I am against thee, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will burn her chariots in the smoke, and the sword shall devour thy young lions: and I will cut off thy prey from the earth, and the voice of thy messengers shall no more be heard.

Let’s recall how we ended last week when we reviewed Nahum 2:8

Nah 2:8 But Nineveh is of old like a pool of water: yet they shall flee away. Stand, stand, shall they cry; but none shall look back (repent).

Here we see ourselves taking the things of the Lord (His doctrine) yet continuing on having our way and not repenting despite all the heat and affliction this raging war in the heavens has already and is continuing to bring to us. The old man is indeed a stubborn beast. Verse 9 continues with this context and our taking the things of the Lord, plundering the store for our own glory and refusing to be obedient.

Nah 2:9 Take ye the spoil of silver, take the spoil of gold: for there is none end of the store and glory out of all the pleasant furniture.

But the Lord has a method to His madness (His ways). New life only comes through death.  The penalty for stealing from our brethren or making merchandise of God’s Elect is death.  That thief that we all first are must go to the “tree” and die with Christ.

Deu 24:7 If a man be found stealing any of his brethren of the children of Israel, and maketh merchandise of him, or selleth him; then that thief shall die; and thou shalt put evil away from among you.

Mat 27:38 Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.

Laying up treasures for ourselves means much more than just money or physical possessions.  It is in fact our own righteousness, our self-righteousness that is the mammon of Scripture.

Mat 6:21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

When we spoil the Lord’s house by taking the gold and silver from the new man, to keep the old man alive, we are stealing from our brethren and that thief must die. Reaping what we sow means that we will be spoiled in return for our spoiling. Christ will recompense our thievery upon our heads and that is a very good thing.

Mat 12:28 But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.

Mat 12:29 Or else how can one enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.

We can be 100% sure that all the reaping we do to our flesh, even that done in the name of the Lord; will be recompensed upon our head (Jer 2:19, Gal 6:7). This reaping of recompense, i.e. judgment, is exactly how the head of the beast is cut off and the new man increases. But it is a process; it is a war in our heart and minds! Here are some OT witnesses to this promise and reaping what we sow for oppressing the new man within and God’s sons without.

Pro 22:23 For the LORD will plead their cause, and spoil the soul of those that spoiled them.

Jer 30:16 Therefore all they that devour thee shall be devoured; and all thine adversaries, every one of them, shall go into captivity; and they that spoil thee shall be a spoil, and all that prey upon thee will I give for a prey.

Being unrepentant hearers of the Word but not doers, we are nothing more than thieves who are robbing God and not being a living sacrifice. Such thieves are being cursed in every age.

Mal 3:8 Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.

When we steal the things of God, His doctrine, the very treasures of the Temple and “buy and sell” them, we are a harlot merchandising the things of the Lord, making His Temple a den of thieves (Mar 11:17, Rev 18:12). Those in Nineveh (the capital of Assyria and Babylon) are the same carnally minded ones that takes the things of God and make their own defiled bread (Isa 4:1). Making our own garments of salvation, we are decked with gold and arrayed in the jewels of the temple yet we are “buying and selling” lies and making others (those that hear us) drink of our fornicating wine.

Rev 17:4  And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:

Eze 16:17  Thou hast also taken thy fair jewels of my gold and of my silver, which I had given thee, and madest to thyself images of men, and didst commit whoredom with them

The beast we set up and worship in our religious zeal wants some glory. Sure we will share it with the Lord but we want a little credit; it is innate to the carnal mind. Yet the Lord will have none of it.

Isa 42:8 I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images [our image of the beast]

Having true doctrine but not yet being tried in the fire of this baptism is our time of being puffed up and in need of nothing. We are taking the things of the Lord (the gold and the silver) but we are not yet obedient [“iswasandwillbe PROCESS”]. The Lord will intensify the war in our heavens through His messengers that will change this and cause us to repent (Heb 12:6, Ezek 38:4) in due time.

Rev 3:17  Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

Rev 3:18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

Rev 3:19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

The word translated “furniture H3627 more properly refers to vessels or instruments and we will see in our next verse how we misuse those vessels and must pay the wages for our sin.

Nah 2:10 She is empty, and void, and waste: and the heart melteth, and the knees smite together, and much pain is in all loins, and the faces of them all gather blackness.

We covered the emptying out of the harlot in part 4 of the Book of Nahum. Being void is where we are when we are separated from the Lord and not living in Truth. But even as Genesis tells us the day comes when “let there be light” is spoken and the spirit of the Lord begins to move over the waters that represent our flesh and the earth.

Gen 1:2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters

The melting and burning of the land has been an almost weekly commentary as that is the heart of the Lord’s process for remaking the marred vessel and re-birthing the new man. A jealous Lord will take vengeance on those who defile His Temple and blaspheme His Name.

Knees are the largest joint in the human body and are critical for how we move about and perform essential functions like standing up.  They represent the strength and independence of the flesh and the walk of the old man. The Lord is going to smote those knees as He shows us “we are sick and in need of a spiritual physician”. In due time every knee shall bow and be submitted at the name of Jesus.

Php 2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

The story of King Belshazzar tells of this process and the resulting judgment.

Dan 5:3 Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, drank in them.

Dan 5:4 They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

Dan 5:5 In the same hour came forth fingers of a man’s hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall of the king’s palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.

Dan 5:6 Then the king’s countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another.

The king of Babylon (you and me) then call upon a prophet of the Lord to tell us the interpretation and the spoken Words reveal to us that we have exalted ourselves by using and defiling the vessels of the Temple of the Lord. There are specific commands that tell us how to eat and drink properly we will look at shortly.  The penalty for misuse of the Lord’s vessels and instruments (i.e. the furniture of verse 9) is death and the old man is quickly slain in the spiritual darkness once our wickedness is revealed.

Dan 5:23 But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified:

Dan 5:30 In that night (darkness, blackness) was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain.

Being confused, mixing lies and Truth, and having to deal with being shown our sinfulness puts us in great inward pain to the very core of our spiritual being. Not yet knowing the fullness of the righteousness of the Lord we will travail as a woman trying to give birth. Looking back at the root for the word translated as pain [H2479] ties it with the process of judgment and the type and shadow of a woman giving birth.

H2479, chalchâlâh, khal-khaw-law’ – Feminine from the same as H2478; writhing (in childbirth); by implication terror: – (great, much) pain.

If you trace this word back to its initial root it is this Hebrew word H2442 that means to wait.

 H2442, châkâh

Dan 12:12 Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days.

Three representing the process of judgment and five the chastening or scourging grace of God, Daniel’s Words are the reason why we are blessed when we are given to patiently endure to the end of our day of the Lord to be saved (Luk 21:19).

Rev 1:3 Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.

As strange as it seems to the natural man, the faces of them all gathering blackness actually refers to the Lord glorifying Himself in us. This is the positive outcome as Christ is formed in us through the destruction and affliction of the old man. The word for blackness here in Nahum 2:10 is this Hebrew word.

 H6289, pâ’rûr, paw-roor’

From H6286; properly illuminated, that is, a glow; as noun, a flush (of anxiety): – blackness.

Total KJV occurrences: 2

Looking at the root of H6286 we see a more often used word meaning glorified.

 H6286, pâ’ar, paw-ar’

A primitive root; to gleam, that is, (causatively) embellish; figuratively to boast; also to explain (that is, make clear) oneself; denominatively from H6288, to shake a tree: – beautify, boast self, go over the boughs, glorify (self), glory, vaunt self.

Here is a good example of how this root word of blackness is used in the OT.

Isa 44:23 Sing, O ye heavens; for the LORD hath done it: shout, ye lower parts of the earth: break forth into singing, ye mountains, O forest, and every tree therein: for the LORD hath redeemed Jacob, and glorified [H6286] himself in Israel.

Everyone should be familiar with the studies on the colors posted on the IWWB site including the three part series on the color black. These studies are essential to know the positive and negative of every word of Scripture and rightfully divide the Word. The double edged sword hides the mysteries that the carnal mind cannot discern.  It should be no surprise that blackness has a positive meaning knowing this truth.

Psa 139:12 Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.

When what we knew as Truth is shown to be lies, the war in heaven is in full swing. This defines the day of the Lord and why Christ came into this world (Joh 9:39).

Amo 5:18 Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end [is] it for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light.

Mat 22:13  Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Act 2:20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come:

Our faces gathering blackness is a necessary step for the throne of the beast to receive the vials representing the wrath of God that will ultimately bring us to repentance.

Rev 16:10  And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain,
Rev 16:11  And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.

1Pe 2:9  But ye [are] a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light

The next few verses will be dealing with lions and their dwellings and actions.

Nah 2:11 Where is the dwelling of the lions, and the feedingplace of the young lions, where the lion, even the old lion, walked, and the lion’s whelp, and none made them afraid?

This prophecy is addressed to both the people of Nineveh and also to the people of Judah (Nah 1:15), another words you and me if we are the people of God. We must first go into Nineveh, aka Babylon, and be seduced by the harlot before we can come out of her my people (Rev 18:4). The prayer of Jacob for his son, Judah, tells us much about what this verse is saying.

Gen 49:9 Judah is a lion’s whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up?

Gen 49:10 The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.

Judah, the Elect of God, is a lion’s whelp then a lion and then an old lion before Christ is raised in us. These three stages of spiritual growth and progression come by our judgment and the war we are studying here in the prophets. The lion is an image of a beast that is also associated with God’s Elect.

Rev 4:6 And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind.
Rev 4:7 And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle.
Rev 4:8 And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.

These words in Nahum are telling us that we are not abiding in the right place that we have not entered into the rest that remains for the people of God (Heb 4:9-10).

It is the sons of God who dwell in safety and none make them afraid. But in our immature state, being yet carnal we are not being at rest. We have not ceased from own works, we have not yet entered into the pasture that is Christ. The word translated feedingplace [H4289] in this verse is the same word almost always translated as pasture.

Eze 34:14 I will feed them in a good pasture [H4289], and upon the high mountains of Israel shall their fold be: there shall they lie in a good fold, and in a fat pasture shall they feed upon the mountains of Israel.

Eze 34:15 I will feed my flock, and I will cause them to lie down, saith the Lord GOD.

We have to be taught the fear of the Lord it is not something we decide to do with our delusion of free will. We will be driven to the Lord when our prey is cut off and we the young lions hunger spiritually. We will be dragged to Christ and fed judgment which will teach us the fear of the Lord.

Psa 34:9 O fear the LORD, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him.

Psa 34:10 The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing.

Psa 34:11 Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD.

Eze 34:16 I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick: but I will destroy the fat and the strong; I will feed them with judgment

The fat and strong are destroyed.  It is the poor in spirit the Lord is working with (Mat 5:5-9).

When we know “another jesus”, we are not afraid. We do not fear God and we are dwelling with seeming peace in the land. But we know that is all a false peace that will suddenly be shattered when Christ comes in the darkest part of the night, midnight.

We show we love God when we obey Him. Any other definition of love is false and is a witness we have not yet been taught the fear of the Lord.

1Jn 5:2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.
1Jn 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

The fear of the Lord brings obedience and that is what casts out the fear of men and us becoming prey for the adversary.

1Jn 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

When the Lord gathers His people on the mountain and feeds us with judgment then none will make us afraid. This is when He makes us lie down in green pasture next to still waters (Psa 23:1-3). Here are a few of many witnesses to this promise of perfect love (i.e. our obedience) casting out all fear.

Eze 34:28 and they shall no more be a prey to the heathen, neither shall the beast [Lions] of the land devour them; but they shall dwell safely, and none shall make them afraid.

Eze 39:26 After that they have borne their shame, and all their trespasses whereby they have trespassed against me, when they dwelt safely in their land, and none made them afraid.

Zep 3:13 The remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies; neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth: for they shall feed and lie down, and none shall make them afraid.

Lions, like every word of Scripture, have both a negative and a positive meaning. But here the Lord is mocking the old man who is living a lie in strong delusion thinking he has peace when there is no peace (1 The 5:3, Jer 6:14). When we are yet carnal, our father the devil has plenty of food and is used of the Lord to devour us and eat our flesh.

1Pe 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

Gen 3:14  And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

All Israel, God’s Elect, first fall prey to the adversary and our first mother of the flesh before we come into the haven of our spiritual mother in the Body of Christ. We all learn how to be very good lions in catching and devouring our prey which are our own people at this stage of spiritual immaturity.

Eze 19:1 Moreover take thou up a lamentation for the princes of Israel,

Eze 19:2 And say, What is thy mother? A lioness: she lay down among lions, she nourished her whelps among young lions.

Eze 19:3 And she brought up one of her whelps: it became a young lion, and it learned to catch the prey; it devoured men.

The end of the process we are enduring is that that old lion, that old adversary the Devil and Satan, along with his angels (and their chariots and horses) will be cast out of our hearts and our minds.

Rev 12:8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.

Rev 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

When the Lord turns the tables and devours the devourers then the adversary within shall have no more resting place.

Our next verse looks at how we eat unworthily in our immaturity.

Nah 2:12 The lion did tear in pieces enough for his whelps, and strangled for his lionesses, and filled his holes with prey, and his dens with ravin.

The Lord uses the wicked as His sword. Our own sinfulness will be used to bring salvation as we have studied. We are the hearers but not the doers of the Word which must be humbled before Christ in us can be exalted. The process of judgment includes Satan and his lions devouring our flesh.

Isa 5:29 Their roaring shall be like a lion, they shall roar like young lions: yea, they shall roar, and lay hold of the prey, and shall carry it away safe, and none shall deliver it.

Jer 2:30 In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.

When we are under the dominion of the adversary, the roaring lion seeking whom he may devour; we are being fed defiled meat and the dark crevices within are filled with lies that keep the ten horned beast submissive to his father, the great red dragon (Rev 12:3).  We are what we eat and what we are eating when under the adversary are lies and idols of the heart.

Rev 16:13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.

Eating and drinking refers to spiritual matters and what we think and believe and take to heart. Doctrines and carnal reasoning are what we eat and drink, either meat or wine. We have seen this battle raging in the heavens being a war of thoughts all given to us by the Lord (Amo 4:13, John 15:5).We have many commands that speak of what we are to eat and drink and with regards to meat, we are told to not eat anything that is dead of itself and is torn or strangled among other commands.

Eze 44:31 The priests shall not eat of anything that is dead of itself, or torn, whether it be fowl or beast.

The message the early church sent to the Gentiles was telling them to take heed to their doctrine and what they eat spiritually. They were commanded not to eat any meat offered to idols, from blood, things strangled or fornication. Here was the punch line of the letter delivered by Judas and Silas after the elders met in Acts 15 to consider the issue of the Law of Moses.

Act 15:27 We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who shall also tell you the same things by mouth.

Act 15:28 For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things;

Act 15:29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.

Being disobedient children first, we don’t obey these table rules on how we are to eat and must be punished with judgment.

The word translated as “ravin” here [H2966] in Nahum 2:12 is only translated that one time, and is most often translated as “torn of beasts” as these OT witnesses below attest. God’s people are not to eat ravened meat which is torn meat. That is only fit to be cast to the dogs who are those outside the covenant of faith.

Exo 22:31 And ye shall be holy men unto me: neither shall ye eat any flesh that is “torn of beasts” [H2966] in the field; ye shall cast it to the dogs.

Lev 7:23 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, Ye shall eat no manner of fat, of ox, or of sheep, or of goat.

Lev 7:24 And the fat of the beast that dieth of itself, and the fat of that which is “torn with beasts” [H2966], may be used in any other use: but ye shall in no wise eat of it.

One of our trials being in the world but not of it is that we are often put in situations where we are given these lies and carnal doctrines to eat or mediate in our mind. It is best to be separated and not engage in such eating and drinking. Even the example of Daniel being a captive in Babylon and refusing to eat of the meat or drink their wine is an example to all of us to this very day.

Dan 1:8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

We simply can’t fit in with this world and eat at the Lord’s Table and the table of devils.

1Co 10:21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils.

Heb 13:9 Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.

Heb 13:10 We have an altar, whereof they have no right to eat which serve the tabernacle.

The way a lion is stopped from roaring is to cut off his prey. By stopping the eating of this strangled meat of the world and Babylon, the negative lions within us, the voice of the adversary, is silenced by being starved to death.

Amo 3:4 Will a lion roar in the forest, when he hath no prey? will a young lion cry out of his den, if he have taken nothing?

It is through death that the adversary is destroyed and there is no more prey, no more food for the lions. By losing our life, becoming a living sacrifice; we cut off the prey of the adversary.

Heb 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is,the devil;

Mat 16:25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.

Rom 12:1  I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

The holes where we hid out in the mountains are the crevices of lies and darkness that we feed on in our deception awaiting the Lion of Judah.

Isa 42:22 But this is a people robbed and spoiled; they are all of them snared in holes, and they are hid in prison houses: they are for a prey, and none delivereth; for a spoil, and none saith, Restore.

Rev 6:15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;

Rev 6:16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:

Here is our final verse for this study.

Nah 2:13 Behold, I am against thee, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will burn her chariots in the smoke, and the sword shall devour thy young lions: and I will cut off thy prey from the earth, and the voice of thy messengers shall no more be heard.

The adversary, the devil, like lions in the natural prey upon the weak and sick. This is the spiritually poor in spirit [negative application] but when Christ comes to make war this situation change.

Pro 28:15 As a roaring lion, and a ranging bear; so is a wicked ruler over the poor people.

The brightness of the Lord’s coming happens suddenly in our spiritual darkness and then we are awakened to righteousness (1 Co 15:34). The war in our heavens will turn and the adversary will be put down as Christ increases and the old man decreases. Chariots are the lies and carnal doctrines and they will be burned in the smoke of the sacrifice of our old life. The sword of the Lord will devour the messengers of Satan, the young lions of that old serpent, the devil who is the father of lies.

The Lord will cut off the prey. The new man in us, the man child, will no longer be deceived and will no longer “buy and sell” in Nineveh. It is the beheading of the beast that cuts off the prey for the adversary and allows the new man, Christ in us, to flourish (Rev 20:4).

Gal 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

The lions of the adversary will be starved to death and the voice of the devil’s messengers, the messengers of the harlot as well; will be heard no more in the kingdom that is being put under the dominion of the Lion of Judah. Entering through the veil of flesh into the Body and abiding there is how the book is opened and the trumpets and vials of wrath are poured on the beast and his throne.

Rev 5:5 And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.

These selected verses from Ezekiel 26 nicely speak to this raging war in our heavens and how the Lord purposes to destroy our carnality (the food for the lions) through His Body speaking Words of fire that consume the chariots, horses and horsemen of the adversary.  This is what destroys the carnal mind.

Eze 26:7  For thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will bring upon Tyrus Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, a king of kings, from the north, with horses, and with chariots, and with horsemen, and companies, and much people.

Eze 26:9 And he shall set engines of war against thy walls, and with his axes he shall break down thy towers.

Eze 26:12 And they shall make a spoil of thy riches, and make a prey of thy merchandise: and they shall break down thy walls, and destroy thy pleasant houses: and they shall lay thy stones and thy timber and thy dust in the midst of the water.

Eze 26:13 And I will cause the noise of thy songs to cease; and the sound of thy harps shall be no more heard.

Next week we will begin Chapter 3 and cover the final verses of this prophecy that was written for our edification.

1Co 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the AGE (world) are come.

“The goodness of God brings repentance”

In our last study (Part 4) of Nahum we saw that the Lord reveals our own wickedness to us to initiate a great war that must be fought in heaven (our hearts and minds). The coming of Christ brings salvation and this requires a war of thoughts with horses, chariots and spears be waged. We won’t get to this verse until our next study but this is how the war ends up as the seed of the serpent within us is utterly cut off from the land.

Nah 2:13 Behold, I am against thee, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will burn her chariots in the smoke, and the sword shall devour thy young lions: and I will cut off thy prey from the earth, and the voice of thy messengers shall no more be heard.

Our old man, aka the carnal mind of the flesh, will seek to save its life and will resist the things of the Lord with all our fleshly might. But ultimately the rider on the white horse, Christ, shows up and devours His enemies and subdues the beast that was sitting on the Lord’s throne (Rev 19:11). This clash between flesh and spirit is called enmity and was put there by the Lord on purpose (Gen 3:15, Rom 8:20). The conflict is the battle of the carnal mind warring against the law of Christ.

We are bound in captivity by our carnal thoughts but when Christ comes we are given the ability to wage war and to take this captivity captive (Eph 4:8). Here Paul contrasts the two sides of this battle.

Rom 7:23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

2Co 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

All men must be dragged to Christ and be caused to lose their life. Nobody comes to the wedding feast voluntarily.

Mat 22:8 Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy

Luke’s version of this parable makes clear we are compelled, dragged there (Joh 6:44).

Luk 14:23 And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled

I have titled this study “The goodness of God brings repentance” after Romans 2:4 which says just that. Chapter 2 of Nahum is covering the process of the Lord bringing this baptism by fire which leads us to repentance. Last week we saw the revealing of our wickedness, this week we will see how stubborn and unrepentant our old man is and how we must through many trials be brought to the place of true repentance. This is the goodness of the Lord; it is His righteous judgments as this study will show Lord willing.

Nah 2:5 He shall recount his worthies: they shall stumble in their walk; they shall make haste to the wall thereof, and the defence shall be prepared.

Nah 2:6 The gates of the rivers shall be opened, and the palace shall be dissolved.

Nah 2:7 And Huzzab shall be led away captive, she shall be brought up, and her maids shall lead her as with the voice of doves, tabering upon their breasts.

Nah 2:8 But Nineveh is of old like a pool of water: yet they shall flee away. Stand, stand, shall they cry; but none shall look back.

One of the themes of Nahum is the Lord contending with us for being hearers of the Word but not doers. It takes the second baptism by fire to turn our head knowledge into a new nature and for us to be given a new name of Christ. This is our period of wrestling with God, seeking to save our live in the flesh all the while claiming we are serving God. But nobody can serve two masters and an end has been determined for this double minded man that we all are until the Lord completes His work in us.

Luk 16:13 No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Thy kingdom come, on earth as it already is established in heaven is our prayer and one that the Lord answers via the process being described here in the Book of Nahum.

Nah 2:5 He shall recount his worthies: they shall stumble in their walk; they shall make haste to the wall thereof, and the defence [covering] shall be prepared.

This war of flesh versus spirit continues with the enmity between the two serving the Lord’s purpose of showing us our innate sinfulness.  Beginning with His Elect, the House of God, aka “His worthies”, judgment will come in the age.  That judgment is how we will learn righteousness (Isa 26:9) and it is our own wickedness, caused of the Lord, that will be used to bring that correction in due time.

Jer 2:19 Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts

Luk 19:22 And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant…

Isa 1:27 Zion shall be redeemed with judgment, and her converts with righteousness.

In order to be corrected and be taught of the Lord, learning good and evil, we must fall seven times (Pro 24:16). To accomplish His purposes, the Lord causes this evil in our inward cities and uses that to seek the occasion to bring judgment against us in the appointed times.

Isa 63:17 O LORD, why hast thou made us to err from thy ways, and hardened our heart from thy fear? Return for thy servants’ sake, the tribes of thine inheritance.

Amo 3:6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it?

It is complete foolishness to the natural man who cannot see that we are taught by a loving father through the chastening and scourging for our very mistakes, which includes our sins.

Heb 12:5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:

Heb 12:6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

The Lord recounting His “worthies” is remembering we are His chosen Elect, the apple of His eye and it is through His chastening that we are remade from the marred vessel into the image of the Son being a kind of first fruits unto salvation.

Jas 1:18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

2 The 2:13 (NIV) But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as firstfruits to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth.

When judgment begins to fall upon us, our carnal instincts will have us run to the wall we built in our religious zeal yet without knowledge. We will run to this wall built with our filthy works of the flesh anchored by the 200 million false doctrines of the great harlot (Rev 9:16) within to defend ourselves, wrest away the judgment of God and keep the beast alive and well (Deu 16:19).

Mat 23:27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.

When we are rich and increased with goods, in need of nothing and relying on our own mammon (self-righteousness), we are building a high wall in our conceit.

Pro 18:11 The rich man’s wealth is his strong city, and as an high wall in his own conceit.

The baptism by fire, the sanctifying work of the Spirit is making an end to this and will usher in true righteousness.

Eze 13:10 Because, even because they have seduced my people, saying, Peace; and there was no peace; and one built up a wall, and, lo, others daubed it with untempered morter:

Eze 13:11 Say unto them which daub it with untempered morter, that it shall fall: there shall be an overflowing shower; and ye, O great hailstones, shall fall; and a stormy wind shall rend it.

Eze 13:12 Lo, when the wall is fallen, shall it not be said unto you, Where is the daubing wherewith ye have daubed it?

Eze 13:13 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; I will even rend it with a stormy wind in my fury; and there shall be an overflowing shower in mine anger, and great hailstones in my fury to consume it.

All of this sin and erring from His Way is the Lord showing us that we are truly beasts and that nothing good dwells in us. We have to come to see that and this does not really sink in until we fall the perfect number of times. The law of sin in our members, i.e. being carnally minded must be taken out of the way.

Php 3:9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

This wall of flesh that separates us from Christ and which we think in our delusion protects us is only being removed when Christ comes the second time for salvation.

Eph 2:14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;

We must endure this process of judgment to be spiritually complete, the walls only fall by us walking by faith and we must patiently endure the trials and tribulation.

Heb 11:30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days.

The old man is lamenting this process and resists having his wall taken away but nobody is going to stand in the day of the Lord’s indignation. These walls built by our works shall all fall.

Lam 2:8 The LORD hath purposed to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion: he hath stretched out a line, he hath not withdrawn his hand from destroying: therefore he made the rampart and the wall to lament; they languished together.

Isa 2:12 For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low:

Isa 2:13 And upon all the cedars of Lebanon, that are high and lifted up, and upon all the oaks of Bashan,

Isa 2:14 And upon all the high mountains, and upon all the hills that are lifted up,

Isa 2:15 And upon every high tower, and upon every fenced wall,

The word the KJV translated as “defense” is the Hebrew word sâkak H5526. This is rendered as “covering” almost always and helps to bring the verse to light as most other versions show including YLT.

Nah 2:5 YLT He doth remember his honourable ones, They stumble in their goings, They hasten to its wall, and prepared is the covering.

The old man and all of our carnal mindedness (with its many chariots and horses warring against the Spirit) will fill the temple of God, His palace with violence. This covering of self-righteousness, this wall of flesh; shall not stand in the day of the Lord. It will be destroyed from the midst of Christ, the stones of fire. The Lord first sets us in the garden but His work is not done, we must first fall away.

Eze 28:14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.

And once we have been caused to stumble and take for spoil the things of the Lord, He will come again to destroy that which defiles from His Temple.

Eze 28:16 By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.

Eze 28:17 Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.

The positive side of covering is what the cherubims of the Lord do to cover the mercy seat.

Exo 37:7 And he made two cherubims of gold, beaten out of one piece made he them, on the two ends of the mercy seat;

Exo 37:8 One cherub on the end on this side, and another cherub on the other end on that side: out of the mercy seat made he the cherubims on the two ends thereof.

Exo 37:9 And the cherubims spread out their wings on high, and covered with their wings over the mercy seat, with their faces one to another; even to the mercy seatward were the faces of the cherubims.

New Testament witnesses of the real meaning of God’s Elect covering the mercy seat include:

Col 1:24 Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body’s sake, which is the church:

Rom 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

Jas 5:20 Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.

1Pe 4:8 And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.

1Pe 2:5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

Christ bringing war to us via the white horse is both going to 1) destroy the covering of self-righteousness but also 2) to cover us with His righteousness which will come by us dying with Him on the cross daily.

Rev 19:11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.

Rev 19:12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.

Rev 19:13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.

Rev 19:14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.

When we are religious yet separated by the great divide (i.e. faith, ears to hear) that no man can cross, we have a zeal for the Lord yet without knowledge. We seek a righteousness of our own, of the carnal mind, but when Christ comes He puts an end to such folly.

Rom 10:4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

Here is our next verse.

Nah 2:6 The gates of the rivers shall be opened, and the palace shall be dissolved.

We reviewed a few weeks ago how the end of the carnal age within comes with a flood. This is a flood of lies and false words that deceive us and have us walking in strong delusion thinking we have arrived and are serving the Lord. The opening up of the flood gates bring the end of the great harlot within. (Rev 12:15-16).

The wicked within us all, the man of sin, the beast, the abomination of desolation, etc. is taken away by the flood. Only the righteous, Christ in us, inherits the earth.

Mat 24:37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Mat 24:38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,

Mat 24:39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Mat 24:40 Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

The wall we run to in order to save our life in the flesh is the same wall that swallows up the Egyptians and delivers Israel at the same time. It is the walls of water, of our own flesh and carnal mind that will consume the old man and usher in salvation for the new man.

Exo 14:27 And Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to his strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled against it; and the LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.

Exo 14:28 And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them; there remained not so much as one of them.

Exo 14:29 But the children of Israel walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea; and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.

The word translated “palace” is interchangeable with the word temple. The word for dissolved is really the word for melt as earlier in Nahum we see the same word H4127 translated that way as is the most often translation of that word. The process is the same, we are just covering greater details in the Lord’s process.

Nah 1:5 The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt [H4127], and the earth is burned at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein.

Putting these Hebrew words into their most common translation makes verse 2:6 read as follows:

Nah 2:6 The gates of the rivers shall be opened, and the temple shall be melted.

Melting and burning up is what fire and heat do. Water that washes us also cleanses by dissolving the dirt. Either way the palace, in the case the Temple of the Lord is cleaned up by the WORD. This is the very essence of baptism that comes when Christ comes to Nineveh the second time.

2Pe 3:12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

As the prophets tell us continually, it is the Body of Christ through which the rivers of living water flow.

Joh 7:38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

Jer 5:14 Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.

Christ, His Body, is the sent ambassador that preaches. We, the Body, are the gates, the very pillars of the temple of the Lord.

1Ti 3:15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

Rev 3:12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.

When these gates are opened to us, then we enter into righteousness that comes by abiding in the Living Word, found in the Body of Christ, the temple of living stones. This is how judgment is brought to our heavens and we are remade through the baptism that “is, was and will be” coming to us as we occupy these clay vessels.

Psa 118:19 Open to me the gates of righteousness: I will go into them, and I will praise the LORD:

Our understanding is increased greatly in our day of the Lord when this door to heaven is opened and these living waters come forth with the sound of the trumpet, signaling that judgment has come.

Rev 4:1 After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.

Rev 4:2 And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.

Hearing these trumpets, all seven of them is what reveals our works and the Lord cleanses His Temple, which temple we are!

1Co 3:13 Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.

1Co 3:17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

Our third verse for this study is verse 7.

Nah 2:7 And Huzzab shall be led away captive, she shall be brought up, and her maids shall lead her as with the voice of doves, tabering upon their breasts.

The reference to Huzzab is simply a translation error according to most bible “experts” and even Strong’s suggest the same.

H5324, nâtsab, naw-tsab’

A primitive root; to station, in various applications (literally or figuratively): – appointed, deputy, erect, establish, X Huzzah [by mistake for a proper name], lay, officer, pillar, present, rear up, set (over, up), settle, sharpen, stablish, (make to) stand (-ing, still, up, upright), best state.

Here is the KJC rendering of this Hebrew Word typically translated “stand” or “stood” but this one time translated Huzzab.

Here is how Smith’s Bible Dictionary puts it.

(fixed), according to the general opinion of the Jews, was the queen of Nineveh at the time when Nahum delivered his prophecy. (Nahum 2:7) (B.C. about 700.) The moderns follow the rendering in the margin of our English Bible –“that which was established.” Still it is not improbable that after all Huzzab may really be a proper name. It may mean “theZab country,” or the fertile tract east of the Tigris, watered by the upper and lower Zab rivers.

Interesting this name was said to mean “molten” by Hitchcock’s Bible Name Dictionary. But not wanting to make too big of a deal on this, I concur this was simply a mistake and should be rendered as several translations such as YLT show it.

YLT – Nah 2:7 And it is established–she hath removed, She hath been brought up, And her handmaids are leading as the voice of doves, Tabering on their hearts.

When we are yet babes and untested in the fire, when distress first comes upon our land within, us we are easily led astray and revert back to our carnal ways. Again the Lord has to show us what we truly are without Him. So we must fall, the great falling away must come first (2 The 2:3-4). It is by the process of us falling down, acting in unbelief or sin that gives the Lord the occasion to bring His wrath and judgment to us. It is a wonderful thing; the judgment of God is truly sweet to the new man. Truly a man is blessed when all this wrath we are reading about in the prophets and Revelation is brought upon our old man. This is the goodness of God to the new man also called the wonderful works of the Lord to the children of men (Psa 107).

Psa 19:9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.

Psa 19:10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

Psa 19:11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them [living them out now] there is great reward.

Judgment comes upon us as babes in the Truth. That is how we learn, through this chastening. The Lord causes us to be led away captive and then returns with judgment and that is how the times of the Gentiles (the carnal mindedness within) comes to an end.

Luk 21:23 But woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck, in those days! for there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people.

Luk 21:24 And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.

This is how we transgress from babes to the mature man in Christ being able to discern good and evil having had our senses exercised BY EXPERIENCE!

Heb 5:13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

Heb 5:14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Anytime you see the “maids or maidens” that are supposedly serving us, leading God’s Elect, you can be sure the flesh has dominion and the beast is still sitting on the throne of our hearts. This verse of doves and breasts all sounds so positive but is actually the very bondage to the law and the carnal mind. This is represented by Hagar and Sarah.

Gal 4:22 For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.

Gal 4:23 But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.

Gal 4:24 Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.

Gal 4:25 For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.

Gal 4:26 But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

We have to be dragged away from Hagar and the false peace and safety of following the crowd.

Gal 4:30 Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.

Gal 4:31 So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.

The flesh Jerusalem and the spiritual Jerusalem represents the enmity of flesh vs. Spirit and the war that IS waging in our heavens. This is the battle and the result will be salvation to all men in the appointed times. The seed of Satan will be cut off and all men will be raised anew in Christ (1 Cor 15:22).

The language of verse 7 is very difficult as rendered in the KJV. The word for breasts is really the Hebrew word for heart or alternatively our mind or understanding.

Our maidens leading us as the voice of doves, is our time following the religious beast we set up and worship as God. Being yet carnal, we are easily led by our maidens (our flesh). In this state we merchandise the things of God until Christ comes the second time. Then this “buying and selling” will stop and the voice of the doves of the valley will no longer be heard in us. The parable foretells of this event.

Joh 2:14 And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:

Joh 2:15 And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew the tables;

Joh 2:16 And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house an house of merchandise.

We always think of this Babylonian and harlot experience as being in Orthodoxy. While that is true, the worst offenders are me and you who are long out of orthodoxy and in the body of Christ. We are the worst of the harlots, we are the chief of sinners and blasphemers of the Lord until our baptism by fire comes and is completed.

Hos 11:5 He shall not return into the land of Egypt, but the Assyrian shall be his king, because they refused to return.

Hos 11:10 They shall walk after the LORD: he shall roar like a lion: when he shall roar, then the children shall tremble from the west.

Hos 11:11 They shall tremble as a bird out of Egypt, and as a dove out of the land of Assyria: and I will place them in their houses, saith the LORD.

We get comfortable in the Body and do not take heed the seriousness of the Lord’s commandments. It is easy to be a hearer of the Word but it takes a painful process of baptism to become a doer of the Word.  It is easy to slide from the fear of the Lord and the trembling at His Word. But we must remain diligent less we too become a castaway. We have seen it happen in this very Body. We must run the race to the very end.

1Co 9:24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.

1Co 9:27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

It is so easy to be led by our maid and maidens. They are to serve us not the other way around. This warning was written by Paul to all of us in case we think we have arrived. We must be vigilant in our walk and examine ourselves. Nice pretty spiritual doves speaking words of love, peace and supposed godliness can easily lead us astray.

2Co 11:3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

2Co 11:4 For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.

It is not enough to have a form of godliness. Satan’s ministers come to us within and without disguises as angels of light. We must try the spirits and not let the lying spirits deceive us by telling us what our itching ears want to hear.

2Ti 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

2Ti 4:4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

Here is the final verse for this study.

Nah 2:8 But Nineveh is of old like a pool of water: yet they shall flee away. Stand, stand, shall they cry; but none shall look back.

Christ is a rock of offense and a stumbling stone. Nothing about Him or His Body is attractive to the flesh and the carnal mind (Isa 53:2-3).

1Pe 2:7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,

1Pe 2:8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

The “they” Peter is speaking about includes me and you and is not those evil people over there.  We too will stumble even after having true doctrine, it takes judgment to bring the flesh and carnal mind under subjection and we are going to be dragged to that outcome.

The old is indeed better to the carnal mind and when the new wine, the true gospel is presented and we actually begin to have to live it out, we like Nineveh of old wants to flee away.

Luk 5:39 No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.

The looking back here in Nahum refers to us repenting or turning back. As the first to be judged, we as God’s Elect will hear the admonishments of Truth but will not submit to them. We won’t turn back; we won’t repent until we are caused to repent by the Lord’s fiery vials of wrath. We see this four times in the book of Revelation alone, but here are two incidents.

Rev 9:20 And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk:

Rev 16:9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.

When Christ comes to us and says arise (stand) and pick up your mat and walk, we don’t obey and stay walking even though we say we will (Jer 6:17). It takes the process of this baptism to get us to into thine house.

Mar 2:11 I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.

Eph 5:14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.

We cannot stand until we drink of this cup we are reading about in Nahum. Enduring this process is what causes us to stand up and stay standing.

Isa 51:17 Awake, awake, stand up, O Jerusalem, which hast drunk at the hand of the LORD the cup of his fury; thou hast drunken the dregs of the cup of trembling, and wrung them out.

Pro 12:7 The wicked are overthrown, and are not: but the house of the righteous shall stand.

These words from Ecclesiastes nicely summarize the strong delusion we have of using our own strength to make us righteous before the Lord. Our pools of water just like our bread are defiled and do not bring righteousness nor salvation which is all the Lord’s work (Jon 2:14).  It is so compelling but in the end it’s all vanity and vexation of spirit as Solomon and we ultimately find out.

Ecc 2:6 I made me pools of water, to water therewith the wood that bringeth forth trees:

Ecc 2:7 I got me servants and maidens, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of great and small cattle above all that were in Jerusalem before me:

Ecc 2:8 I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces: I gat me men singers and women singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts.

Ecc 2:9 So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me.

Ecc 2:10 And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour.

Ecc 2:11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.

We must wait on the Lord and have patience to endure all these things. All things are ours, even living through this long and painful process that Nahum is describing in these symbolic words.

1Co 3:21 Therefore let no man glory in men. For all things are yours;

1Co 3:22 Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours;

1Co 3:23 And ye are Christ’s; and Christ is God’s.

Next week we hope to complete Chapter 2 and covering some very deep verses full of symbolism that reveal details of the mystery of the kingdom of God to those the Lord has given “ears to hear and eyes to see”.
