“Eating, Drinking and Being Merry”

Key Verses:  Amos 6:2 – 6:7

We learned last week that being “at ease” in Zion meant we are not doing the work of God and instead are seeking the ways of the heathen nations to avoid the burden of living a godly life.

Joh 6:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, this is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent

Cutting peace treaties with the “chief of the nations” within ourselves is the result of our turning grace into lasciviousness and failing to earnestly contend for the faith (Jud 1:3-4).

Amo 6:1 Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!

Our failing to work is not standing on faith. For this cause the Lord will send upon us strong delusion as we feast on the finer things in the Lord’s temple and the streets of His Holy City (Luk 13:26) but attend not the carrying the cross.  This brings the occasion the Lord has been seeking to kindle the fire of judgment in our earth (Luk 12:49) that comes by the Word. The Lord’s response to this unbelief and our pleasure in continued sins and fornication with heathen nations (turning grace to lasciviousness); is to send to us strong delusion.

2Th 2:7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.

2Th 2:8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

2Th 2:9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,

2Th 2:10  And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

2Th 2:11  And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

2Th 2:12  That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Our captivity to sin and darkness is what leads to our “damnation” which is the very judgment of that man of sin within us, the blessing of God that will ultimately save us and all men in the appointed time. The unbelieving antichrist within, needs to be revealed and is identified to us as we go beyond Damascus into captivity to our flesh and carnal mind.

Amo 6:2 Pass ye unto Calneh, and see; and from thence go ye to Hamath the great: then go down to Gath of the Philistines: be they better than these kingdoms? or their border greater than your border?

Amo 6:3 Ye that put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near;

Amo 6:4 That lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst of the stall;

Amo 6:5 That chant to the sound of the viol, and invent to themselves instruments of musick, like David;

Amo 6:6 That drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments: but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.

Amo 6:7 Therefore now shall they go captive with the first that go captive, and the banquet of them that stretched themselves shall be removed.

Going beyond Damascus puts us deep into Spiritual Babylon where we are using the precious stones and vessels of the Lord for position; seeking a name for ourselves as we measure and compare ourselves to others. The heathen nations within and without are the rod of His anger used to bring judgment upon His people and reveal our captivity to sin and the lusts of the flesh.

Isa 10:5 O Assyrian, the rod of mine anger, and the staff in their hand is mine indignation.

Isa 10:6 I will send him against an hypocritical nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

Amo 6:14 But, behold, I will raise up against you a nation, O house of Israel, saith the LORD the God of hosts; and they shall afflict you from the entering in of Hemath unto the river of the wilderness.

All three of these named cities denote our spiritual progression onward to maturity and coming to see ourselves as the chief of sinners and wretched beasts when we of ourselves do anything.

Ecc 3:18 I said in mine heart concerning the estate of the sons of men, that God might manifest them, and that they might see that they themselves are beasts.

These three cities have names and linkages to the desires of our flesh to be great (pride) and to continually expand its borders (influence).  Before we are humbled and Christ is exalted, the Lord turns us over to the idols of our heart (Eze 14:4).  Driven by prideful lusts, we seek gain from our supposed godliness and exalt ourselves against the congregation (Isa 14:13), seeking preeminence and are not content (1Ti 6:6) with where the Lord has us.

Calneh came from the line of Cush and specifically Nimrod who was a “mighty one in the earth” and a hunter who like Esau was a man of the field/world (Gen 25:27, Mat 13:38).

Gen 10:8 And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth.

Gen 10:9 He was a mighty hunter before the LORD: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD.

Gen 10:10 And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.

Isaiah tells us Calneh is the same as Carchemish which means “fortress of Chemosh”

Isa 10:9 Is not Calno as Carchemish? is not Hamath as Arpad? is not Samaria as Damascus?

Chemosh was looked at in some detail in Amos Part 6.  This is the God of the Moabites who came from one of Lot’s two incestuous sons.  Spiritual incest as other studies have shown is uncovering the nakedness (sin) of our family which comes when we sleep with them in the darkness  rather than walking in the light.  The Body of Christ and the ministry of Christ is to be covering sins not uncovering them (1Pe 4:8).

Mat 25:36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

The spirit of Satan, the accuser of the brethren and fault finding spirit is being cast out of heaven and is made manifest in our journey beyond Damascus (Amo 5:27). The wagging the finger and finding fault is only cast out when we starve the old man and feed the new man.

Isa 58:9 Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity;

Rev 12:10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.

Hamath comes from H3246 meaning “walled” in like a “walled fortress”.  This is the false peace and safety we know, thinking we have made it through already before the Lord comes suddenly in the dark of night. Hamath is said to be “as Arpad” (Isa 10:9) which means “comfort” and is likened to the spreading out like on a bed. Spiritually speaking this is nothing more than being at ease, which is trusting in ourselves and the works of our hands as we build our own tower into heaven and rise above the clouds (Heb 12:1 – the saints).

Isa 14:14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

Gen 11:4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

All three of these cities are kingdoms of the heathen nations and Gath is no different, perhaps best known for being the home of Goliath the giant of the uncircumcised Philistines that represent the power of our flesh.  Goliath is our beast and the beast of all carnally minded men that walk after the flesh (signified by the number six).

1Sa 17:4 And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.

In the Micah Study Part 3, we showed the word Gath [H1660] is actually the very word in Hebrew that means winepress. Having our beast made manifest by journeying beyond Damascus into Spiritual Babylon/Assyria and engaging the armies of Israel in the war taking place in our heaven, is what brings the occasion for that same beast to be destroyed.

Rev 19:15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

Our failing to stand and fight and do the work of God in our laziness (lasciviousness) being puffed up with knowledge leads us into sin and our wicked hearts deceive us. Amos asks the question are we better than these three kingdoms or their borders greater than ours?  This is to cast light on our lack of faith and our continued doing what flesh loves to do but is so unwise.

2Co 10:12 For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.

2Co 10:17 But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

2Co 10:18 For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.

Being at ease gets more difficult as the furnace of affliction (Isa 48:10) is turned up in our day of wrath against the man of sin that is making a name for myself. We will stop it when the fire gets so hot and Romans grace accomplishes its purpose in changed behavior (Rom 5:20). Yet it is a process as we like Job, believe we are not worthy to be judged and bear this scourging.

Amo 6:3  Ye that put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near;

Putting off the day of evil is not being aware of our day of visitation from the Lord and wresting away His righteous judgments, the very trials and tribulations that are necessary to save us (Exo 6:6, Isa 1:27) by destroying our old way of life and establishing a new way.

Mat 16:25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.

Following Christ is remembering Lot’s wife and not looking back and seeking to save the old.

Luk 9:62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

It is following our Lord’s footsteps and forsaking all that truly separates the chosen from the faithful in the end (Rev 17:14).

Luk 14:33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

It is the self-righteous spirit of Job and the Pharisees (i.e. you and me and ALL MEN) who do not need judgment and believe they have arrived way before the whirlwind comes and proves otherwise. These Pharisees, full of knowledge and zeal to search the Scriptures, sit in Moses’s seat which is a seat of self-righteousness by the works of the carnal law before the true reformation is completed in our day of the Lord.

Mat 23:2 Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat:

Mat 23:3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.

Mat 23:4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.

Mat 23:5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, 

Eating and drinking in the Kingdom of God is the means to the end which is salvation and being delivered of our besetting sins. We are found worshiping ourselves, the temple of God and forgetting the presence of builder of the temple who is far greater.

Amo 6:4 That lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst of the stall;

Amo 6:5 That chant to the sound of the viol, and invent to themselves instruments of musick, like David;

Amo 6:6 That drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments: but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.

The Scriptures have many parables of our eating and drinking to excess and making that our primary focus. We so easily see this sin in others but not in ourselves as the sins of King David show us.  It takes a prophet to show us that we are THAT MAN (2Sa 12:7)

2Sa 12:1 And the LORD sent Nathan unto David. And he came unto him, and said unto him, There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor.

2Sa 12:2 The rich man had exceeding many flocks and herds:

2Sa 12:3 But the poor man had nothing, save one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and nourished up: and it grew up together with him, and with his children; it did eat of his own meat, and drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter.

2Sa 12:4 And there came a traveller unto the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man that was come unto him; but took the poor man’s lamb, and dressed it for the man that was come to him.

2Sa 12:5 And David’s anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan, As the LORD liveth, the man that hath done this thing shall surely die:

Like David we “invent” or devise and cunningly spin the truth to justify ourselves and be seen dancing and prancing in the congregation.  Yet our obedience is far from complete and we are in need of a prophet to bring rebuke to us to see ourselves as this man of sin. The end does not come until we see ourselves as this abomination in the Lord’s Temple (Mat 24:15). Only then are we taught the new song that only the Elect can sing as we abide in the fire, acknowledging we are the chief of sinners in all humility.

Rev 14:3 And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth. (by judgment)

This is the true music and true Psalms the Lord is well pleased with that comes forth from a converted and contrite heart that has and is being humbled by the light shining in darkness.  The priority will shift from knowledge to filling up in the fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22).

Eph 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

Eph 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

Seeking preeminence, seeking dominion over other’s faith (2Co 1:24) and taking their wife and killing their husband, all sins of David committed in his affair are ours sin.  We are the man!  This is our story and words the Elect of God shall live by (Luk 4:4).  We learn it is better to go to the house of mourning than feasting.

Rom 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

Rom 14:18 For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men.

Are we really serving Christ or are we serving self and feeding the old man in seeking gain among men?  The Lord knows and tries our hearts by these very judgments we are studying.

1Co 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God (and not to ourselves).

Until we are humbled and given a change of heart (little by little) we are trusting in our spiritual riches and the outward fruits we bring that are seen of men.

Luk 12:16 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:

Luk 12:17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?

Luk 12:18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.

Our work, our labor in the kingdom of God is not to get rich and lay up treasures for ourselves (Pro 23:4, Luk 12:21). The ministry of Jesus Christ is to feed others first and NOT OURSELVES. As servants we eat second and thereby reap the blessing that is greater to those who give rather than receive. Our reasonable service is our entire life be given in service and there to be no seeking of gain.

Luk 17:8 But will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare something for my supper, and gird yourself and serve me till I have eaten and drunk, and afterward you will eat and drink’

Luk 17:9 Does he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I think not.

Luk 17:10 So likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do.’

It is a narrow way to navigate the path to eternal life.  Paul praised not the carnal Corinthians who were coming together and making a show of eating and drinking for themselves when such work is to be done at home and not when we come together for service.

1Co 11:21 For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken.

1Co 11:22 What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not.

This spirit of self, manifests in our gorging ourselves with food (waxing fat – Deut 32:15) and drinking to drunkenness (Deut 29:6) that is ordained before we will know the Lord in spirit and I truth.   The day comes as it did for Noah and for Lot when we are eating and drinking in lusts for self and then Christ is revealed and the beast is destroyed by the water and fire of judgment.  (Luk 17:25-30).

Turning grace into lasciviousness is putting the light that is in us, under a bed and fornicating with the world.  We truly are being taught to separate by these many parables and learning just how serious is our calling.

Luk 8:16  No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light.

Becoming part of the living Christ is a transformation process from living for ourselves and awakening from our spiritual sleep and putting away all things that are not of faith. When the Lord comes and arises within us, then we are commanded to get up from our bed and walk in faith (Joh 5:9).

Not being grieved for the affliction of Joseph is our ignorance to our own spiritual status and need for a healing as well as those in the Body.  The words for “grieved for the affliction” of Joseph are in their primary use telling us we are not aware of our sickness [H2470] that is destroying us [H7667].  Jesus Christ only comes to those who know and acknowledge they are in need of such a spiritual doctor (1T1 1:15, Rom 7:24).

Mat 9:12 But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.

Mat 9:13 But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

This responsibility to work out our own salvation first and foremost is our duty (Phi 2:12) and what acting in faith (working in the kingdom of God) is truly all about.

Gal 6:5 For every man shall bear his own burden.

Mat 7:5  Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.

The Lord is, was and will be, getting our attention and showing us our lackadaisical faith that has turned His grace into justification for our continued sins and fornicating with the gods of this world.  Our moth eaten garments and cankered gold are being exposed and we are counseled where to go as the trials of judgment intensify.

Rev 3:18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

Rev 3:19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

The outward application of not being grieved is failing to be the faithful watchmen and truly love our brothers and go to them when they err and use the word to bring rebuke and correction where and when it is needed.

Tit 2:15 These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.

Jas 5:20 Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.

We must always take heed (remain vigilant) in the fight of faith and examine ourselves and try the spirits in ourselves and in others.  Grievous wolves enter in (Act 20:29) and speak lies to draw away disciples in the gainsaying tradition of Core and Balaam.  This is why we must always try the spirits and examine ourselves to see if we are truly in the faith.

Amo 6:7 Therefore now shall they go captive with the first that go captive, and the banquet of them that stretched themselves shall be removed.

As we are taken captive deep into Assyria beyond Damascus (aka Spiritual Babylon), our sins are being uncovered in our captivity and the feasting and celebrating ceases. Despite our knowledge, we are captives to our sins and like a pig returning to its wallowing in mire or a dog to its vomit, we are overcome by the beast.

2Pe 2:22 But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

Rev 11:7 And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.

It is a famine of hearing the words of the Lord that will bring us to our wits end and leads us back to our Father’s House as the Prodigal Son.

Amo 8:10 And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loins, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the mourning of an only son, and the end thereof as a bitter day.

Amo 8:11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD

Being awakened to righteousness and seeing our true spiritual status will lead us to wash our hands in the fire and turns us back to the Lord with the mourning and weeping necessary to bring forth the new man.

Jas 4:8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Jas 4:9  Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.

Next week the Lord begins smiting Israel for its inequities and disobedience being unfaithful to the Word.  Jacob will be made small which is the prerequisite for Christ to be exalted.  The might strong man of sin within us is being cut down as Christ is raised within us.

Amo 6:8 The Lord GOD hath sworn by himself, saith the LORD the God of hosts, I abhor the excellency of Jacob, and hate his palaces: therefore will I deliver up the city with all that is therein.

Micah Part 1 – Micah the Morasthite

Book of Micah Part 1 – Micah the Morasthite

Mic 1:1 The word of the LORD that came to Micah the Morasthite in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, which he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem.

The Book of Micah is a message to all of the Lord’s people.  It was written to both the people of both the Northern and Southern Kingdoms (Israel and Judah) another words to “all the Jews”.  The sum of the word also tells us who the true Jews are and that all the prophets of old did not minister to the flesh Jews but to the spiritual ones (The Elect) who would come much later (1 Pe 1:10-11).

Micah was a contemporary of Isaiah and they served the Lord at about the same times.  Given the similarities of Isaiah 2 and Micah 4, some speculate Micah was a contemporary of Isaiah.

The message of Micah is a message that comes to all of God’s people.  That is His very elect in this and every age when the Kingdom of God within us (Luk 17:20-21) is divided.  Neither part is living right, both are practicing idolatry and will be cutoff and a third part will emerge and be brought through the fire that will sanctify the new man (Christ) in us.

Zec 13:8 And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the LORD, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein.

Zec 13:9 And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.

While the overarching theme of the prophets and especially the minor Prophets seems to be judgment, Micah has more of a balance and the second half of the book is focused more on the hope of salvation and our needing to wait upon it.  It is in Micah that it is prophesied a Savior would come from Bethlehem (Mic 5:2).  There are many names and places mentioned in Micah and we will take the time to drill into most of them when we get to them.

Micah deals with events that are now on the house of God, which house we are, yet it also gives detail on the role of the elect and supports other prophecies regarding the Millennium rule and the role in the lake of fire.  We will deal with those prophecies when we get to them later in the series.  Here is the outline of Micah from the ESV which is similar to the chapter titles given by most other translations.

  • Chapter 1 – The Coming Destruction
  • Chapter 2 – Woe to the Rich Oppressors
  • Chapter 3 – Rulers and Prophets Denounced
  • Chapter 4 – The Mountain of the Lord
  • Chapter 5 – The Ruler to Be Born in Bethlehem
  • Chapter 6 – The Indictment of the Lord
  • Chapter 7 – Wait for the God of Salvation

It is almost comical to read the synopsis and commentaries on this Book.  They must have thought Micah was a schizophrenic switching back and forth from doom and gloom to hope and peace.  They just don’t know the ways of the Lord and the strange act He brings to His people through the process of judgment.  But we do know these things and we will be able to decipher the message the Lord intended and has hidden in the symbols and parables of the storyboard.

1Co 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

1Co 2:7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:

Divided Kingdoms

All things are yours and mine if we are the Lord’s people (1 Cor 3:21).  We live by every word (Mat 4:4) and that includes this prophecy of Micah.  The Lord comes to bring peace but that comes about only by a process of division first (Luk 12:51).  We live the Words of Micah in our later stage baptism of fire when the Lord returns the second time for salvation (Heb 9:28).  So the stage is set, the kingdoms of the Lord are divided after we have come into the knowledge of the truth and are communing with the Lord.  Like Solomon did, despite our newfound wisdom and rulership, we too will be led astray by strange women.  We do this despite knowing the commands of the Lord.  We will leave our first love.

1Ki 11:1 But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites;

1Ki 11:2 Of the nations concerning which the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love.

1Ki 11:3 And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines: and his wives turned away his heart.

This slow drift away from DOING the Truth is what we all need to be watchful of given the deceitfulness of sin that lurks in the hearts of these clay vessels.

1Ki 11:4 For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father.

The Lord in His jealousy and His wrath will seek vengeance for His Temple, which Temple we are if we are His Elect.  This inequity is visited upon the succeeding sons as we mature inwardly.

1Ki 11:11 Wherefore the LORD said unto Solomon, Forasmuch as this is done of thee, and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded thee, I will surely rend the kingdom from thee, and will give it to thy servant.

1Ki 11:12 Notwithstanding in thy days I will not do it for David thy father’s sake: but I will rend it out of the hand of thy son.

With the death of Solomon his son Rehoboam, is made king but does not follow the council of the elders and many of the people turn against him as he follows false doctrines mistreating the people (1 Ki 12:14).  The people rise up and rebel and appoint Jeroboam from the tribe of Ephraim their first king.  And we are told this rebellion of Israel against the house of David, a type of Jesus Christ will not pass away.

1Ki 12:19 So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.

Here again is the one verse we will cover today and lay a foundation for the whole study.

Mic 1:1 The word of the LORD that came to Micah the Morasthite in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, which he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem.

Micah is from the Hebrew word H4318, pronounced “Mee-kaw” and is found 32 times in Scripture.  Interesting that Strong’s defines Micah as the name of seven Israelite’s with seven representing the number of spiritual completion.

Gath is most famous for being the home of the Philistine giant Goliath and where the people were smitten with emerods in their secret parts (1 Sam 5:8-9).  The repentance of the people and the prayers of Samuel were answered and Gath was restored to Israel.

1Sa 7:14 And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even unto Gath; and the coasts thereof did Israel deliver out of the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.

Yet this peace was only temporary as the flesh does not go easy and requires a second coming of Christ (the Ark) to kill the beast within us all.  The story of David and Goliath tells us this later in 1 Samuel and brings home the point of what being a possession of Gath means.

So now we know who is playing the songs, singing and making melody to the Lord spiritually speaking.  It is those of us in the winepress, it is the Morasthite’s that have dominion over the beast within (in down payment form).

This loud noise is the trees of the field clapping their hands and is the sound of salvation as we saw in the last installment of the Nahum study.  Micah’s prophecy represents the coming of the Lord to subdue the land.  The events the whole of Scripture apply to this time frame in our walk.  First the final judgment and baptism by fire.

Rev 19:15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

And this is when we play and sing for the Lord by and through our redemption that “is, was and will be” coming through this great judgment (Exo 6:6).

Rev 14:2 And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps:

There are no idle Words of Scripture and therefore there is meaning (hidden treasure, Prov 25:2) in us being given the names of the three kings of Judah here in verse one.  Let’s do a quick review of the nature and character of these three kings and recall that three is the number of the process of our spiritual completion by judgment.  It takes this process to be made complete spiritually and these kings represent varying phases of our growth and maturation in the Lord.  Each of these kings represent part of that process as there is a time and season for every purpose under the sun.

Jotham’s father, Azariah (aka Uzziah), as king was generally a good king but like so many of us had many idols of hearts that were worshiped within.  Jotham’s father was smitten with leprosy until the day he died for his idolatry and leading Judah astray.

2Ki 15:5 And the LORD smote the king, so that he was a leper unto the day of his death, and dwelt in a several house. And Jotham the king’s son was over the house, judging the people of the land.

And here is the synopsis of what Jotham did.  This typifies our still Babylonian mindset focused on many good works but our unwillingness to obey God but rather focus on sacrifices.  But as we know and learn, far better to obey than to sacrifice.

Jotham was blessed and increased of the Lord as we also experience having found the truth and being given to reign and rule with Christ in down payment form.  But we have a whole lot of growing and maturing yet to come.  Jotham is interestingly taken from the same Hebrew word H8535 most often translated as “perfect” or upright and referenced several places in JOB including here.

Job 1:1 There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.

We know that what is good and perfect in the sight of the Lord is a much higher standard than that of men.  None of us will be perfected until we die and are resurrected.  Nobody has arrived yet.  Yet Jotham was relatively speaking a good king as well.  He was born of woman whose Hebrews names can be traced back to the possession of righteousness.

 Unlike his father before him, Ahaz did not do right, he was not “perfect” in the sight of the Lord.  This is what we all do after being given Truth and given judgment and dominion over the nations within us.  To learn righteousness and be able to discern good and evil as mature men, we will leave our first love and we will apostatize.

2Th 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

Here is more detail from 2 Kings and like all of us “apostasizers”, we will cause our sons to pass through the fire that we are expressly warned against.

Lev 18:21 And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD.

This is what happens when we don’t take heed the seriousness of the Lord’s commands to come out and be separate and touch not what is unclean.  It takes making these mistakes to learn the lesson.

 2Ki 16:3 But he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, yea, and made his son to pass through the fire, according to the abominations of the heathen, whom the LORD cast out from before the children of Israel.

2Ki 16:4 And he sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree.

2Ki 16:5 Then Rezin king of Syria and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel came up to Jerusalem to war: and they besieged Ahaz, but could not overcome him.

Our love for the world and all that is in the world will make us an enemy of God.  We will even think to take the jewels we have been given and make peace with the old man and the heathen.

2Ki 16:8 And Ahaz took the silver and gold that was found in the house of the LORD, and in the treasures of the king’s house, and sent it for a present to the king of Assyria.

These are not history lessons for us, they are Words that we all shall live by (Luke 4:4).  If we ever needed a reminder of the role of watchmen and their importance to protect the flock, we have the stories of Ahaz and these Scriptures from the New Testament written to the Body of Christ.

1Jn 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

1Jn 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

Jas 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

Ahaz was also the King of Judah when the promise of the Messiah was given as recorded in Isaiah 7.

Isa 7:10 Moreover the LORD spake again unto Ahaz, saying,

Isa 7:11 Ask thee a sign of the LORD thy God; ask it either in the depth, or in the height above.

Isa 7:12 But Ahaz said, I will not ask, neither will I tempt the LORD.

Isa 7:13 And he said, Hear ye now, O house of David; Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will ye weary my God also?

Isa 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Isa 7:15 Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good.

And here is another witness to the requirements for this apostasy and how we will be corrected by our own wickedness when Immanuel is given and born into our hearts.

Isa 7:16 For before the child shall know to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land that thou abhorrest shall be forsaken of both her kings. 

The old must be done away with and the carnal Job, the carnal Ahaz, the carnal you and me must be destroyed by the war that must take place in heaven.

Isa 14:27 For the LORD of hosts hath purposed, and who shall disannul it? and his hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?

Isa 14:28 In the year that king Ahaz died was this burden.

The Lord will not put up with the blaspheming of His Name and defilement of His Temple forever.  It is for His Name’s sake He saves us.  We all will live through this period of turning God’s grace into lasciviousness (Jud 1:4) and this all part of our maturation process and how we learn to discern good and evil (Heb 5:13).

2Ch 28:19 For the LORD brought Judah low because of Ahaz king of Israel; for he made Judah naked, and transgressed sore against the LORD.

 2Ch 28:21 For Ahaz took away a portion out of the house of the LORD, and out of the house of the king, and of the princes, and gave it unto the king of Assyria: but he helped him not.

Next comes King Hezekiah, the son of Ahaz to be King of Judah.

The number of grace is implicit in the definition of Hezekiah and what his time in our walk represents.  The fiery chastening of the Lord will strengthen the new man in us as we continue to be shown our innate wickedness and endure the righteous judgment of the Lord.

Hezekiah is a more mature king who has learned much from his fathers’ yet still has some chastening and falling down into sin to learn as we all do in falling down 7 times (Prov 24:16).

Here is a synopsis of Hezekiah’s reign from 2 Chronicles.

2Ch 29:1 Hezekiah began to reign when he was five and twenty years old, and he reigned nine and twenty years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Abijah, the daughter of Zechariah.

2Ch 29:2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that David his father had done.

2Ch 29:3 He in the first year of his reign, in the first month, opened the doors of the house of the LORD, and repaired them.

2Ch 29:4 And he brought in the priests and the Levites, and gathered them together into the east street,

2Ch 29:5 And said unto them, Hear me, ye Levites, sanctify now yourselves, and sanctify the house of the LORD God of your fathers, and carry forth the filthiness out of the holy place.

2Ch 29:6 For our fathers have trespassed, and done that which was evil in the eyes of the LORD our God, and have forsaken him, and have turned away their faces from the habitation of the LORD, and turned their backs.

2Ch 29:7 Also they have shut up the doors of the porch, and put out the lamps, and have not burned incense nor offered burnt offerings in the holy place unto the God of Israel.

2Ch 29:8 Wherefore the wrath of the LORD was upon Judah and Jerusalem, and he hath delivered them to trouble, to astonishment, and to hissing, as ye see with your eyes.

2Ch 29:9 For, lo, our fathers have fallen by the sword, and our sons and our daughters and our wives are in captivity for this.

2Ch 29:10 Now it is in mine heart to make a covenant with the LORD God of Israel, that his fierce wrath may turn away from us.

Hezekiah sought to obey the Lord and worship Him.

2Ch 29:26 And the Levites stood with the instruments of David, and the priests with the trumpets.

2Ch 29:27 And Hezekiah commanded to offer the burnt offering upon the altar. And when the burnt offering began, the song of the LORD began also with the trumpets, and with the instruments ordained by David king of Israel.

2Ch 29:28 And all the congregation worshipped, and the singers sang, and the trumpeters sounded: and all this continued until the burnt offering was finished.

2Ch 29:29 And when they had made an end of offering, the king and all that were present with him bowed themselves, and worshipped.

As we should know, Hezekiah did not take heed the stringent commands and showed the Babylonian king the jewels of the Temple and also used the Levite’s in service when only the priests are to handle the vessels of the sanctuary (2 Ch 29:34, 2 Ch 30:18).

2Ki 20:12 At that time Berodachbaladan, the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present unto Hezekiah: for he had heard that Hezekiah had been sick.
2Ki 20:13 And Hezekiah hearkened unto them, and shewed them all the house of his precious things, the silver, and the gold, and the spices, and the precious ointment, and all the house of his armour, and all that was found in his treasures: there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that Hezekiah shewed them not.

Yet the Lord was working with Hezekiah as He works with all of His elect to bring deliverance and salvation to them little by little as they grow in the knowledge and grace of the Lord.

2Ch 31:20 And thus did Hezekiah throughout all Judah, and wrought that which was good and right and truth before the LORD his God.

2Ch 31:21 And in every work that he began in the service of the house of God, and in the law, and in the commandments, to seek his God, he did it with all his heart, and prospered.

Despite many victories, our flesh does not go away easily and we must live through a continuous process of judgment to destroy and keep subdued the beast that was, is not but yet is (Rev 17:11).

Ch 32:24 In those days Hezekiah was sick to the death, and prayed unto the LORD: and he spake unto him, and he gave him a sign.

2Ch 32:25 But Hezekiah rendered not again according to the benefit done unto him; for his heart was lifted up: therefore there was wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem.

2Ch 32:26 Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah.

We grow and advance in the Kingdom by this ongoing process of spiritual completion and the Lord will prosper us exactly according to His plan and schedule.

2Ch 32:30 This same Hezekiah also stopped the upper watercourse of Gihon, and brought it straight down to the west side of the city of David. And Hezekiah prospered in all his works.

This final point to be made in this first study is to see and understand the relevance of this prophecy applying to both Samaria and to Judah. It is addressed to all men as when we understand what Samaria and Jerusalem represent.

Mic 1:1 The word of the LORD that came to Micah the Morasthite in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, which he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem.

As we saw with Ahaz and Hezekiah more notably, the Lord is serious about the commands for us to separate from the world and its ways of life.  That is transgression of Jacob that will be in our next study.

Mic 1:5 For the transgression of Jacob is all this, and for the sins of the house of Israel. What is the transgression of Jacob? is it not Samaria? and what are the high places of Judah? are they not Jerusalem?

The field is the world and is represented by Samaria.  The parable of the wheat and the tares depicts this mystery.

Mat 13:38 The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one;

Seeking to be rich with knowledge and use our godliness for gain in the Body of Christ is how we create idols and high places in Judah which represents the House of God where the Lion sits.  Micah and all of God’s prophets, which are His Elect our collectively Jesus of Nazareth whom the whole world hates.  Jesus Christ, the Lord and His Christ, must go through both Samaria and Judah.

Act 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Samaria represents the world in our later stages of development and maturation.  Worldly influences are still strong being near the gate to the holy city of Jerusalem and the land of Israel.  Going through this process and confessing our many husbands and being shown our leprosy is a requirement for “The Christ” just as it was for our Lord.

Joh 4:4 And he must needs go through Samaria.

Luk 17:1 And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee

So as move on in Micah we will see judgment first as that is what delivers us and make us usable to the Lord to be the judge of others.  We are judged for our transgressions in both the world and in the Body.

Jer 23:13 And I have seen folly in the prophets of Samaria; they prophesied in Baal, and caused my people Israel to err.

Jer 23:14 I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an horrible thing: they commit adultery, and walk in lies: they strengthen also the hands of evildoers, that none doth return from his wickedness: they are all of them unto me as Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah.

Conclusion

I wanted to lay a foundation of the breadth and depth of Micah’s prophesy.  In total it will show our progression from babes in Christ to the mature man filled with Jesus Christ.  Once prepared of the Lord, we will see in later studies that we will then be used to rule not only the inward nations but the outward nations with a rod of iron.

The prophets of the Lord are the vehicles through which Jesus Christ is revealed in us and through us.  The elect that makes up the Body of Christ are those angels and is by speaking to one another that we are judged and our scarlet sins turned into the fine white linen of the saints.  The Words of Micah and everyone one of the Body are the fire that brings to light our wickedness and reproves us.

Isa 1:17 Learn to do well; [how do we learn to do well?] seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.

Isa 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together [H3198 – reprove], saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

Like Nahum, Micah is all about our ongoing judgment and sanctification that comes by abiding in the fiery Word and be watched over by the Lord and His Christ.  We are the kings and priests of Judah the very people Micah was sent to prophesy too.

Jer 22:1 Thus saith the LORD; Go down to the house of the king of Judah, and speak there this word,

Jer 22:2 And say, Hear the word of the LORD, O king of Judah, that sittest upon the throne of David, thou, and thy servants, and thy people that enter in by these gates:

Jer 22:3 Thus saith the LORD; Execute ye judgment and righteousness, and deliver the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor: and do no wrong, do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless, nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood in this place.

Lord willing, we will be given to understand more the mysteries of the Kingdom of God and be better prepared for the trials that lie ahead as we are transitioned from hearers into doers and from babes into the mature man in Christ able to discern good and evil and in the process of becoming like gods.

Psa 82:6 I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.

Psa 82:7 But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes.

Psa 82:8 Arise, O God, judge the earth: for thou shalt inherit all nations.
