Amos Part 10 – Smiting the Winter House

Key Verses:  Amos 3:8 – 3:15

We ended last study with this verse containing the final two rhetorical questions that portray the extent of the Lord’s hand in the process of judgment.

Amo 3:8  The lion hath roared, who will not fear? the Lord GOD hath spoken, who can but prophesy?

The most recent installment of Mike’s Isaiah’s study emphasized that the words “roared” and “spoken” are in the Hebrew Piel (perfect mood) tense; meaning they represent a continual is, was and will be action. It is the continual roaring of the Lion of the tribe of Judah that teaches us the fear of the Lord and continually sends us forth to prophecy to the nations within ourselves and without (Link to Isaiah 7:19-20 Study Here).

It is this ongoing revelation (action) of Christ working in us that is being declared unto us which is the secret hidden from the world and revealed only to the chosen few.

Amo 3:7 Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.

1Co 2:7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:

The church of Jesus Christ is built when The Christ, the Lord’s ambassadors, are sent forth to prophesy (Isa 6:9, Mat 10:5-8). Like all the prophets of the Lord, we are prophesied to by an fellow angel/prophet and in turn are sent to bring the revelation of Jesus Christ to all men.

Rev 10:11 And he said unto me, Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.

The prophesying to the nations begins inwardly for the Elect in this age of judgment and will outwardly be fulfilled as we are used to bring others to Christ now and in the lake of fire.

Amo 3:9 Publish (hearken) in the palaces at Ashdod, and in the palaces in the land of Egypt, and say, assemble yourselves upon the mountains of Samaria, and behold the great tumults in the midst thereof, and the oppressed in the midst thereof.

Amo 3:10 For they know not to do right, saith the LORD, who store up violence and robbery in their palaces.

Amo 3:11 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; An adversary there shall be even round about the land; and he shall bring down thy strength from thee, and thy palaces shall be spoiled.

Amo 3:12 Thus saith the LORD; As the shepherd taketh out of the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear; so shall the children of Israel be taken out that dwell in Samaria in the corner of a bed, and in Damascus in a couch.

Amo 3:13 Hear ye, and testify in the house of Jacob, saith the Lord GOD, the God of hosts,

Amo 3:14 That in the day that I shall visit the transgressions of Israel upon him I will also visit the altars of Bethel: and the horns of the altar shall be cut off, and fall to the ground.

Amo 3:15 And I will smite the winter house with the summer house; and the houses of ivory shall perish, and the great houses shall have an end, saith the LORD.

The Word sent forth will be heard (published) in the fleshly, worldly and religious kingdoms of this world. This applies inwardly in this age to those few given ears to hear and being caused to hear the Word of the Lord (Jer 18:2, Pro 1:23). Outwardly these words will be fulfilled in the lake of fire when the kingdoms of this world become the kingdoms of the Lord and His Christ.

Ashdod as studied in Amos Part 3, was a key Philistine city (strength of the flesh), where Dagon (symbolizing our beast) was/is their and our god at the appointed times. When the Word of God is published in these spiritual strongholds (the inward Philistine cities), the result is the cutting off of the lies and the power those lies have over our walk (1Sa 5:3-4). The beheading of Dagon foretells the work the Word will do in the appointed times for all. The fire of judgment will cut off the lies and their power over us.

Pro 19:9 A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish.

Egypt represents the world and the kingdom of the old man and the carnally minded. The burden of the Egyptians is bondage and what the Spirit of Christ will set us free from in our day of judgment.

Exo 6:6 Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments:

The Word of God calls us to gather on the mountains of Samaria where we will see great tribulation (tumult) and oppressions. God’s people, who is Jesus Christ, the Body that the world hates and persecutes (Act 22:8, Joh 15:18), must needs go through Samaria. We must live by every word and thank God because it is here in spiritual Samaria where we will and are meeting the real Christ and begin to partake of the true living waters.

Joh 4:4 And he must needs go through Samaria.

Joh 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

In Part 2 of the Micah study,  there was a deeper review of the meaning and significance of Samaria. The woman at the well (in Samaria) was found by Jesus Christ and a lost sheep was returned to the fold worshiping in Spirit and in Truth by partaking of the living waters. Our role as watchman is not just within Jerusalem. From the wall that is The Christ, we look both inwardly and outwardly. With eyes round about, we look out into Samaria and pull in the lost sheep of the house of Israel the Lord has prepared and brings to us (Psa 10:17, Rom 10:15) by the foolishness of our preaching (1Co 1:21).

Luk 15:4 What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?

Mat 10:5 These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not:

Mat 10:6 But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

The process of spiritual progression is signified by the number three. Samaria in this way is like Babylon, the third step of progression we must endure and then come out of to be delivered.  Overcoming the flesh (Ashdod), the world (Egypt) and the lies of the great harlot(Samaria) are all necessary experiences for God’s people to live out and thereby learn.

Rev 18:4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues

Samaria is where we go to flee from our old life and find peace. We flee to the mountains after being shown that we are the abomination causing desolation despite our outward religiosity.

Mat 24:15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)

Mat 24:16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:

Mountains are elevated earth that sits closer to the heavens and spiritually speak to the pride of carnal man and it is on those mountains where the beast carries the great harlot sits within our yet carnal mindset. A fellow angel/prophet shows us these truths as we look behind in our day of judgment.

Rev 17:8 The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.

Rev 17:9  And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.

Coming out of Babylon is coming out of Samaria and that is a process that takes the rest of our days in these clay vessels. The 200 million lies of the harlot is a giant army that takes much overcoming as our faith is tried and we learn to judge righteous judgment (Joh 7:24) and not even think above what is written (1Co 4:6). There is always more work, more maturing to come and we must guard against slothfulness. It’s a good fight of faith to the end (1Ti 6:12, Mat 24:13)

Rev 2:20 Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.

The Lord knows how to reserve the unjust for their day of wrath. Our temporary peace and being at ease is a false peace and will come to an end when the woes (judgment) come.

Amo 6:1 Woe to those at ease in Zion, and those trusting in the mountain of Samaria, those noted as the leader of the nations! And the house of Israel came to them.

The great tumults [H4103] in our midst is the trouble and destruction that is necessary and ordained for salvation to come.  Being given the Morning Star (Rev 2:28) is the blessing of judgment as Christ rised within is and brings much trouble to our old man.

Eze 7:6 An end is come, the end is come: it watcheth for thee; behold, it is come.

Eze 7:7 The morning is come unto thee, O thou that dwellest in the land: the time is come, the day of trouble [H4103] is near, and not the sounding again of the mountains.

Learning righteousness comes from enduring this trouble and learning patience in our judgment. This is how we are caused to keep His commandments (Eze 36:27) and be set free from sin, if we continue in Truth (Joh 8:32). Before we are being taught through the chastening and scourging grace of the Lord (Tit 2:11, Heb 12:6), we do not  know to do right and we oppress the new man within us and those without ourselves as we judge and act in an unrighteous manner.

Amo 3:10 For they know not to do right, saith the LORD, who store up violence and robbery in their palaces.

Our time in spiritual Babylon (Samaria) is the time preceding the great earthquake that brings salvation. We must go into Samaria and lay up treasures in our earth and store up wrath for the day of wrath yet to be revealed from heaven.

Isa 39:6 Behold, the days come, that all that is in thine house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store until this day, shall be carried to Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith the LORD.

Rom 2:5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest (store) up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;

Ignorance is no defense of our misdeeds in our physical courts of law and neither is it a defense in God’s court. Sins of ignorance must be recompensed and an offering made (Lev 4:3, 4:13).

Heb 2:2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward

Act 17:30 Truly, these (former) times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent,

To bring us to repentance the Lord creates adversaries.

Amo 3:11 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; An adversary there shall be even round about the land; and he shall bring down thy strength from thee, and thy palaces shall be spoiled.

So therefore, because of our sins, God’s elect who are judged first are the first to learn the fear of the Lord. Learning this teaches us that our every misdeed has a just recompense from a sovereign God. We reap what we sow. The Lord creates adversaries to test us and punish us when we disobey and this is all purposed for our learning righteousness.

1Ki 13:26 And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the word of the LORD: therefore the LORD hath delivered him unto the lion……

Coming to our wits ends (Psa 107:27) requires us to lose all hope of escape and deliverance of our own. The Lord uses the wicked WITHIN and WITHOUT, as His sword to oppress us and in due time cause us to cry out to the Lord.

Psa 17:9 From the wicked that oppress me, from my deadly enemies, who compass me about.

Psa 17:12 Like as a lion that is greedy of his prey, and as it were a young lion lurking in secret places.

Psa 17:13 Arise, O LORD, disappoint him, cast him down: deliver my soul from the wicked, which is thy sword:

Our redemption draws near when we see ourselves surrounded by enemies (Luk 21:20).   Spiritually speaking this is our flesh and the lusts and pride that defines the carnally minded.

Mat 24:9 Then shall they (Carnal Men) deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake.

Psa 22:12 Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round.

The Lord created a crooked serpent to deceive (Job 26:13), the same being the waster that destroys (Isa 54:16). The Lord works all things, even evil things for good (Rom 8:28) even raising up an adversary to surround the land promised to the Israel of God. The Lord turns us over to the law of sin and the flesh and lusts that live deep in these bodies of clay. Babylon and Assyria are part of the same spiritual army the Lord uses to accomplish His will of salvation.

Isa 10:5 O Assyrian, the rod of mine anger, and the staff in their hand is mine indignation.

Isa 10:6 I will send him against an hypocritical nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

Jer 27:6 And now have I given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant; and the beasts of the field have I given him also to serve him.

Jer 27:7 And all nations shall serve him, and his son, and his son’s son, until the very time of his land come: and then many nations and great kings shall serve themselves of him.

There are a couple of revealing nuggets in this verse’s comparison of our deliverance with the residue of a sheep being taken out of the mouth of a lion.

Amo 3:12 Thus saith the LORD; As the shepherd taketh out of the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear; so shall the children of Israel be taken out [delivered – H5337] that dwell in Samaria in the corner of a bed, and in Damascus in a couch

First it is God’s elect, all those who enter thru the door that is Christ that are the shepherds of the sheep (Joh 10:2). This is what prophesying does, it rescues and delivers the residue of sheep from the mouth of the roaring lion who is our father the devil. David, as a type of Jesus Christ and of God’s elect, who would come at Pentecost, experienced in the physical, what we do in the spiritual (Joh 6:63, 1Co 10:11).

1Sa 17:34  And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:

1Sa 17:35  And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.

The beast that all men are (Ecc 3:18) are of their father the devil who seek to devour the man child within ourselves and without.

Rev 13:2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.

Psa 22:21 Save me from the lion’s mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns.

There is not much remaining after a lion gets hold of sheep and so it is with the true Israel of God, the spiritual Jews who the Lord judges in this age. This is true individually within ourselves but also outwardly thinking of those few, the few chosen is relative to all mankind.

Jer 30:11 For I am with thee, saith the LORD, to save thee: though I make a full end of all nations whither I have scattered thee, yet will I not make a full end of thee: but I will correct thee in measure, and will not leave thee altogether unpunished.

Rom 9:27 Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved:

The Lord’s makes the wicked for the day of evil (Pro 16:4) but His purposes is always good and that is to remake us and not to destroy us. All it takes is a tiny sprig/seed planted by the Lord.

Isa 11:1 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:

1Pe 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

What the Lord has torn down, He will and is raising up again in the “three days” of our spiritual progression (Joh 2:19, Mat 24:2). The Lord that turns us into sin (destruction) yet also turns us back (Psa 90:2) and restores all that was lost with even greater treasures.

Joe 2:25 And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.

Mat 17:11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.

A final point on verse 12 is our dwelling in Samaria on a bed and in Damascus on a couch.  Beds and couches are where we sleep or relax. The new man will be taken from this Samaritan bed and the old man will be left (Luk 17:34). Until we go through it, we always think the Lord has come and our earthquake is already past. Yet He comes as a thief in the night when we are saying peace and safety resting on beds and couches in spiritual Samaria (1Th 5:2-3).

Until we go through our judgment and abide in the fire, the furnace of affliction (Isa 48:10), there remains a rest we have yet to fully find. Even when we do find it, there is yet more to be found and this journey of faith and growing never ends.

Heb 4:9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.

Heb 4:11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

Our labor for the Lord is to be done in His House which is where deliverance is found (Zion).

Judgment being upon the altars of Bethel, the House of God means our way of worshiping and making sacrifices in serving the Lord is in focus. The outcome of our judgment is that we will and are obeying the Lord (Rom 2:13, Rom 6:14). The Lord accomplishes this destroying of the power of flesh by cutting off our horns from which we get our power to defy and rebel against Him.

Horns signify power and like all words can be positive or negative. The Lord and His Word is the power or the horn of our salvation (Psa 18:2, Rom 1:16). Yet here in Amos the horns being cut off is the power the enemy hold over the new man. In wrath and jealousy that power is destroyed when the Lord brings vengeance for His Temple.

Lam 2:3 He hath cut off in his fierce anger all the horn of Israel: he hath drawn back his right hand from before the enemy, and he burned against Jacob like a flaming fire, which devoureth round about.

Lam 2:4 He hath bent his bow like an enemy: he stood with his right hand as an adversary, and slew all that were pleasant to the eye in the tabernacle of the daughter of Zion: he poured out his fury like fire.

The power of Satan over us is the carnal mind. To be carnally minded IS DEATH (Rom 8:6) and it is this mindset that holds power (unbelief) over us and must be destroyed.

Rev 13:2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.

Christ comes to us and through His death in us, we overcome through death to self, the power of our father the devil (Joh 8:44).

Heb 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

For Christ to increase, the flesh and old man is being decreased (Joh 3:30) and by this process we grow and take on the mind of Jesus Christ (1Co 2:16).

Amo 3:15 And I will smite the winter house with the summer house; and the houses of ivory shall perish, and the great houses shall have an end, saith the LORD.

The Maker of all things is the Maker of all houses and the One who makes all the seasons of life.

Psa 74:17 Thou hast set all the borders of the earth: thou hast made summer and winter.

There is indeed a time and a purpose for every season under heaven (Ecc 3:1-8). Before we bear fruit, we don’t bear fruit and this is why the Lord brings judgment against His vineyard (Isa 5:4-5) for raising up briars and thorns instead. Good lasting fruit only comes by us falling down, acting in unbelief and then being chastened of the Lord.

Heb 12:11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

Winter is a time of spiritual darkness, storms/trials and a dearth of spiritual fruit. It is cold in the winter signifying our need for covering and the comfort that only the Body of Jesus Christ can provide. Love covers a multitude of sins (1Pe 4:8) as does our learning obedience in the fire of out trials (Rev 3:18). Our covering is found only in Christ by The Christ of Christ.

Rev 1:13 And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.

Rev 19:8 And to her (The Body) was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.

The elect must stay faithful in the winter seasons and stand on faith knowing the author of salvation is not ourselves but the Lord. We are being taught to be patient and wait on the Lord.

Mat 24:32 Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh

Jer 36:22 Now the king sat in the winterhouse in the ninth month: and there was a fire on the hearth burning before him.

God is smiting the winter house within us with the summer house to destroy it. The summer house that brings the Light and the warmth is the Body of Christ, the same purveyors of judgment through the spoken Word (Mat 19:28, Rev 20:6). Our winter house of flesh is smitten by the summer house and in turn we become a summer house to work the same work in others.

Rev 22:8 And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things.

Rev 22:9 Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.

The man of sin’s abode is the winter house where we abide alone and serve self. The summer house is the Body of Christ which is the instrument the Lord uses to bring judgment and salvation. Our way of escape is only through the pillars of the Temple that are the body of Christ (Rev 3:12, Rev 15:7-8). Praying our flight not be in winter, is a prayer that we be given a spiritual wife, a help (Gen 2:18), to guide us on our way of escape. We cannot make it alone.

Mat 24:20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:

Pro 31:14 She is like the merchants’ ships; she bringeth her food from afar.

It is by showing the winter house to the summer house that we become ashamed of our sins and begin to strive (stop being at ease) to conform to the pattern shown us by the Word.

Eze 43:10 Thou son of man, shew the house to the house of Israel, that they may be ashamed of their iniquities: and let them measure the pattern.

Ivory is a cherished physical ornament used to dress up and make attractive things in the natural. Ivory being predominantly white is used by us spiritually speaking when we focus on the outside of the cup rather than the inside where God looks. Both the kings of Samaria (1Ki 22:39) and the beast of Babylon worship and serve the false gods of Baal under the influence of the harlot (Jezebel) that make merchandise of the things of God (Rev 18:12) and focus on the outside vs. the inside of the cup.

Luk 11:39 And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness.

The Lord is not impressed with appearances and looks to the heart of man for righteousness.  Abiding in spiritual Samaria (Babylon) we become complacent with our knowledge which is why the Lord comes the second time for salvation apart from sin. Those beds and houses we make of ivory to justify ourselves and seek gain are consumed by the fire poured out.

But the day does come that God’s elect and ultimately all men will return with the wine and summer fruit to be enjoyed by all:

Zec 14:8 And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be.

Rev 22:2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

Next week Lord willing, we will continue into Chapter 4 where the Lord will begin and are  dragging us off the mountain of Samaria and to Himself using fishhooks.
