Amos Part 4 – Forgetting the Brotherly Covenant

Key Verses: Amos 1:9 – 1:10
We are spending significant time on a few verses at a time in these early segments in our study of Amos. This is because there are eight specific transgressions the Lord is making against the inward spiritual cities that are in the Kingdom of God within us. And we know the number eight symbolizes new beginnings, the coming forth of the new man. It is important to cover these eight essential progressions of judgment and understand the specific transgressions the Lord is bringing against us. The Elect of God, who are being judged NOW, in this age, should be looking for and hastening (accelerating) the day of the Lord. This is the day that will make manifest the new heaven and new earth that symbolize the appearing of Jesus Christ within us.
2Pe 3:11 Therefore, since all these things (the old) will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness,
2Pe 3:12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat?
2Pe 3:13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness (Jesus Christ) dwells.
Let’s remember the first two transgressions that brought the occasion the Lord was seeking to bring fire and destroy the palaces and walls that represent the strength of our flesh.
1. Damascus threshed Gilead with instruments of iron: The most basic judgment is teaching us to stand only on the WORD and make righteous judgment not leavened with carnal reasoning and worldly thoughts.
2. Gaza led the whole captivity captive and delivered them up to Edom: The weak flesh is actually the strong flesh that needs to be subdued in order for us to advance in maturity. The Lord manifests our secret sins (smites us with emerods) to humble us and show us our innate wickedness.
We start today in verse 9 with the city of Tyrus accused of building upon Gaza’s transgression.
3.Tyrus delivers up the whole captivity to Edom, and remembers not the brotherly covenant.
The accusation of Tyrus (Tyre) builds on the transgression of Gaza that delivers the carnally minded (the whole captivity) up to Edom. Edom representing the first man of the flesh, a hunter and man of the world (field) and is where we are imprisoned to the flesh and are unable to repent and to judge righteous judgment. Yet Tyrus is also charged with a serious offense because “they” (YOU and ME) remembered not the brotherly covenant.
Amo 1:9 Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Tyrus, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they delivered up the whole captivity to Edom, and remembered not the brotherly covenant:
Amo 1:10 But I will send a fire on the wall of Tyrus, which shall devour the palaces thereof.
The Body of Christ, “The Christ” is a spiritual family uniquely chosen of the Lord and knitted and bonded in love.
Eph 4:16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
Jesus Christ is our brother, and our sister, our mother and our father. He is all of these things if we know the real Jesus Christ and that He has come in His flesh which is His Body.
Mat 12:48 But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren?
Mat 12:49 And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!
Mat 12:50 For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.
As God’s people we are not to seek our own gain but are to be sold out for our brothers. Our Lord tells us there is no greater love than this.
Joh 15:12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
Joh 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
The Lord, speaking in parables tells us just how important is it that we walk in obedience to love.
Mat 22:36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
Mat 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Mat 22:38 This is the first and great commandment.
Mat 22:39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Mat 22:40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
And lest we have any doubt on what love is, we have many Scriptures that make it crystal clear.
1Jn 5:2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.
1Jn 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
2Jn 1:6 And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.
The Lord’s true disciples are also known as “Disciples Indeed”.
Joh 8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue (abide, obey) in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
Not remembering the brotherly covenant happens when we are led astray by our sins and lusts and do not constantly continue in His work for the brethren. If we are to be found faithful, we need much more than knowledge of doctrine. There had best be some fruit. We must follow our Lord and live a sacrificed life like our Lord who gave His life as a ransom.
Eph 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them
Rom 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
We are to do good (love all) but this is especially so for the household of faith (Gal 6:10).
1Pe 2:17 Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.
Contrary to the carnal mind and the fleshly way of judging, when we speak the Word in sincerity and meekness to correct a brother or sister we are loving them.
Heb 12:6 for whom the Lord loves He chastens, and He scourges every son whom He receives.”
Eph 5:2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savour.
Forgetting the brotherly covenant is neglecting our work and roles as watchmen of the flock. We have to contend for the faith. We don’t cease from our work until the 7th day, when it’s over.
Jas 5:20 Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.
Jud 1:3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.
Being in covenant is being ONE with Christ and that means with His Body.
1Co 12:12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.
1Co 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
1Co 12:14 For the body is not one member, but many.
The Body of Christ, our brothers and sisters in Spirit is the HELPER the Lord has made for us.
Gen 2:18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
Entering the kingdom of God requires enduring many trials and suffering much affliction. The many stories about Tyre and its kings tell us much about the man of sin that we are before Christ comes to make war and bring the spiritual earthquake that brings salvation. When we have true doctrine but are still not doing the WORD, only hearing; we are seeking gain and promoting our old way of life and keeping the beast alive and well on the throne of God. We are serving SELF not the Lord at this stage. We need to transform and become more blessed by becoming a giver.
Gal 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ, and I live; yet no longer I, but Christ lives in me. And that life I now live in the flesh, I live by faith toward the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself on my behalf.
Mat 20:27 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:
Mat 20:28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
Our carnal mind will strongly resist becoming a sacrifice and being content with our spiritual wages. The fleshly strongholds within us (Tyrus) will implicitly want gain from our supposed godliness (1Ti 6:6). This gain saying (Core) and reward seeking (Baalam) ceases as we suffer the punishment of our transgressions.
2Co 2:17 For we are not, as so many, peddling the word of God; but as of sincerity, but as from God, we speak in the sight of God in Christ.
Our reward comes at the end if we endure, learning righteousness by judgment all the way. That is the prize yet the race must be finished (Rev 17:14, 2Ti 4:7) to obtain it.
Php 3:14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
Our service to our brothers and BODY, is our duty and what unprofitable servants take great joy in performing.
Luk 17:10 So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.
We have to endure much torment to have the jealousies, covetousness and vexation of the flesh burned out of us so we can serve one another without malice and without prejudice.
Rom 12:10 Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another;
Rom 12:11 not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord;
The Christ are “saviors in training” by our being “judges in training” for our role in judging all men (1Co 6:2, Rev 20:4). If we are not given to move on to maturity in this regard, we will have no part in the blessed and first holy resurrection. There is no allowance for us to forget and forsake the brotherly covenant. In fact, we have many warnings against doing such.
Heb 10:24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
Heb 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
If we are His Elect, it is because we have been chosen to be Kings and Priests. We have a role, a service to perform and we must do it faithfully to the end to make the first resurrection and be used of the Lord to judge the world.
Oba 1:21 Then saviors shall come to Mount Zion To judge the mountains of Esau, And the kingdom shall be the LORD’s.
Isa 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
The Lord is jealous for His Temple and His People that have His Name. It is through our faithfulness to the brotherly covenant that the Lord will send the fire that destroys the man of sin in our day of the Lord.
Amo 1:10 But I will send a fire on the wall of Tyrus, which shall devour the palaces thereof.
Names and places have great spiritual significance. The fact that it was Tyrus that forgot the brotherly covenant is no coincidence as the meanings and ensamples in the Old Testament show (1Co 10:11, 1Pe 1:10-12).
In the outward physical world Tyre is an ancient city that exists to this very day in the nation of Lebanon. Tyrus is out from the coast of the Mediterranean and is located about 80 km south of modern day Beirut, Lebanon. The name of the city means “rock” after the rocky formation on which the town was originally built. The city of Tyre was particularly known for the production of a rare and extraordinarily expensive sort of purple dye. This is fascinating as we know purple comes from the mixture of flesh (red) and spirit (blue) as the sum of the WORD shows us the spiritual significance of colors and their hidden meaning.
The merchandising activities that we do in spiritual Tyre (a type of Babylon) is the same merchandising that the harlot engages in as told in the Book of Revelation (Rev 18:16-17). It is the man of sin within us that is trafficking in carnal reasoning’s and thoughts. This is what we do when we are immature before our faith is proven with trials. We will seek gain, peddling the Word for profit and generally make merchandise of the things of the Lord going the way of Cain and following after the error of Balaam. That city and all it represents is being burned with fire in the Day of the Lord.
Rev 18:8 Therefore her plagues will come in one day—death and mourning and famine. And she will be utterly burned with fire, for strong is the Lord God who judges her.
In the physical, Tyrus was an island surrounded by the sea. If we think of the spiritual significance of an island and the sea, we can readily see that Tyrus represents a part of us that is puffed up with knowledge (elevated) yet still surrounded by the strength and pulls of the flesh (the sea). When a “burdensome” prophet (the meaning of Amos) comes to speak words of fire, that kingdom is being laid waste and it is revealed to us from the Body of Christ (the land of Chittim).
Isa 23:1 The burden of Tyre. Howl, ye ships of Tarshish; for it is laid waste, so that there is no house, no entering in: from the land of Chittim it is revealed to them.
Tyre, like Babylon, takes the word of God and wraps it in its own idols of dust and makes its paths out of this corrupted and leavened judgment that it applies in its carnal reasoning.
Zec 9:3 And Tyrus did build herself a strong hold, and heaped up silver as the dust, and fine gold as the mire of the streets.
Rev 18:12 The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all thyine wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, and all manner vessels of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble
Living by every word means that we, above all people, given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, will leave our first love. We will leave this first estate and fall away so the man of sin can be revealed (2Th 2:3). This is not happening out there in orthodoxy, it’s happening in the church of the saints is, was and will be.
Jud 1:6 And the angels (messengers of God) which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.
Jud 1:11 Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.
Act 20:30 Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.
Tyre or Tyrus is H6864 and comes from a root word of the same name that is translated as flint or sharp stone.
H6864, story, tsore
From H6696; a stone (as if pressed hard or to a point); (by implication of use) a knife: – flint, sharp stone.
The root word is used as a positive when speaking of the mind of Christ and immovability of the truth and the Lord our God who changes not.
Eze 3:9 As an adamant harder than flint [H6864] have I made thy forehead: fear them not, neither be dismayed at their looks, though they be a rebellious house.
It is indeed this hard and sharp mind of Christ that accomplishes our spiritual circumcision and we see that in type and shadow in the circumcision of Moses’s son by his wife.
Exo 4:25 Then Zipporah took a sharp stone [H6864] and cut off the foreskin of her son, and cast it at his feet, and said, Surely a bloody husband art thou to me.
Yet in the negative, a hard stone, a flint is representative of our rebellious and unrepentant hearts that do not want to give up their life and are not willing to pay the price of being a disciple. A hardened heart (stone) is what a heart of proud flesh is. This heart is being replaced by us living through our judgment and the process of spiritual circumcision.
Eze 36:26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.
Our living spiritually in Tyrus and Babylon is the Lord working all things for the greater good for those who love Him. We have to see ourselves as this man of sin and in this way, the sharp stone of Tyrus is used to cut off our flesh when our judgment has come (Jer 2:19, Eze 34:16)
As we saw last week with the smiting of Gaza, Ashdod et. al. with emerods in their secret places, the Lord brings judgment by manifesting SIN in our midst. Yes, the Lord makes peace and creates evil (Isa 45:7) and He is the one causing us to err from His ways (Isa 63:17).
2Sa 12:11 Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.
Amo 3:6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it?
But the Lord shall have no part in sharing His glory with our man of sin. The Lord turns us over to the idols of our hearts and sends evil spirits (Psa 78:49, Joe 3:4) to manifest sin and to uncover our wickedness. We must come to see it before the appearing of Christ within us.
Eze 28:7 Behold, therefore I will bring strangers (evil spirits) upon thee, the terrible of the nations: and they shall draw their swords against the beauty of thy wisdom, and they shall defile thy brightness.
Eze 28:10 Thou shalt die the deaths of the uncircumcised by the hand of strangers: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD.
There are two sides to the two edged sword. The Lord uses even the wicked, including our own wickedness to bring about salvation.
Psa 17:13 Arise, O LORD, disappoint him, cast him down: deliver my soul from the wicked, which is thy sword
Pro 16:4 The LORD hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.
Here we have an example of the Lord doing this against the inward city of Tyrus. This is the same as the fire that ultimately destroys the strength of Tyre, the walls and its palaces.
Eze 26:3 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Tyrus, and will cause many nations (strangers) to come up against thee, as the sea causeth his waves to come up.
Eze 26:4 And they shall destroy the walls of Tyrus, and break down her towers: I will also scrape her dust from her, and make her like the top of a rock.
The King of Tyre was instrumental in building King David’s house (2Sa 5:11) and then later the outward “flesh Temple” of the Lord through King Solomon.
2Ch 2:7 Send me (Solomon) now therefore a man cunning to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass, and in iron, and in purple, and crimson, and blue, and that can skill to grave with the cunning men that are with me in Judah and in Jerusalem, whom David my father did provide.
2Ch 2:8 Send me also cedar trees, fir trees, and algum trees, out of Lebanon: for I know that thy servants can skill to cut timber in Lebanon; and, behold, my servants shall be with thy servants,
We now know that the Lord does not dwell in Temples made by human hands. Instead He dwells in His people who are His Temple (1Co 3:16) that He Himself builds. In our self-righteousness, we will build in vain but not on the firm foundation that is Christ (1Co 3:11). That Temple built with our fleshly hands shall not stand. King Hiram did not do this out of the goodness of his heart, he was paid well for his work by David and Solomon alike (2Ch 2:10). The sum of the Word tells us that Jesus Christ builds His church and He does not need any man to help Him. Building temples for the Lord is what we all do at first but it is proven vanity in the end. King Solomon learned with time and wrote about it in Psa 127:1 and Ecc 1:2. JOB also learned that his own righteous works were filthy rags as he boasted in them (See Job 29). The Lord’s standard for righteousness exceeds that of a Pharisee (Mat 5:20) and leaves no room for a “Me, Myself and I” or an “I have arrived attitude”. The reason we are not to think above what is written is given us in the next verse we often overlook.
1Co 4:7 For who maketh thee to differ from another? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it?
Tyre represents the pride of our man of sin thinking he or she is somebody of their down doing. With a gain seeking mindset driven by the pride of life we buy and sell, trafficking in the things of God for honor and glory.
Isa 23:8 Who hath taken this counsel against Tyre, the crowning city, whose merchants are princes, whose traffickers are the honourable of the earth?
The telling proof of what Tyrus represents comes from the very well-known yet misinterpreted Scriptures from Ezekiel 28 regarding the prince of Tyrus. If there was ever a set of Scriptures that spoke about us being in a self-exalted, gain saying mode, knowing truth but also forgetting the brotherly covenant which is the foremost commandment of the law — then these passages from Ezekiel 28 are them. Oh what a wretched man of sin we are when we forget the covenant and don’t remember it’s not about US but it’s about Christ.
Eze 28:2 Son of man, say unto the prince of Tyrus (YOU and ME), Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thine heart is lifted up, and thou hast said, I am a God, I sit in the seat of God, in the midst of the seas; yet thou art a man, and not God, though thou set thine heart as the heart of God:
This is what possessing the treasures of the Lord’s Temple will do to flesh without the Spirit of Christ to subdue our pride and humble us. Our hearts will be lifted up and we will worship the image of the beast. Knowledge is an insatiable appetite the Lord gives us in this stage. This is our Luke 12 days of storing up treasures and building bigger barns (Luk 12:16-21) thinking we do the Lord a service.
Eze 28:4 With thy wisdom and with thine understanding thou hast gotten thee riches, and hast gotten gold and silver into thy treasures:
Eze 28:5 By thy great wisdom and by thy traffick hast thou increased thy riches, and thine heart is lifted up because of thy riches:
Tyrus signifies our reversion into the ways of the world and judging un-righteously. We must be on guard the deceitfulness of what lives (sin) in our hearts. We must constantly examine ourselves (2Co 13:5, Eph 5:15). Don’t think for a second these verses don’t apply to you and me. We live these words also that the Lord spoke (Mat 4:4. Luk 4:4).
2Co 11:13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.
2Co 11:14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
This is leaving our first love is forgetting the brotherly covenant. The new man, immature in the faith will stumble. This falling away and getting puffed up and using our godliness for gain must be experienced for the pride of flesh to be brought low (Isa 5:15, Jam 4:9). The lamentation for Tyrus continues…
Eze 28:14 Thou art (prince of Tyre) the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.
Eze 28:15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
Eze 28:16 By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore, I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.
Having the spiritual city of Tyre within us burned with fire is what brings contentment with where the Lord has us in life.
1Ti 6:6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.
1Ti 6:9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
The Lord will use these judgments against our transgressions TO CAUSE us to walk in His statutes which is the same as having the love of God shed abroad in our hearts.
Eze 36:27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.
Rom 5:5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
These judgments we live out from Amos are how we have learned and are continuing to learn righteousness. As we grow in faith and are judged for our revealed sins, we will come to know and to love our family in Christ. We have some spiritual formula’s and admonishments on how to escape the lusts of the flesh and snares of the carnal mind. Central to these admonishments is that we not forget but instead remember and focus on the brotherly covenant with The Christ.
2Pe 1:5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
2Pe 1:6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
2Pe 1:7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
1Co 13:13 And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
