Biblical Truth

Repentance Unto Life

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Many wrongly accuse those preaching the truth that salvation is 100% of the Lord of eliminating repentance from the gospel.  Such is not the case and this argument stems from the carnal belief that man saves themselves as a result of its own free will decisions they make on behalf of Christ.  The  hope is that this post on Biblical repentance will open up the understanding for some that are stuck with the dilemma of repentance without man having free will to repent .  A recent question came in as follows:

Repentance is very clearly stated as vital for salvation throughout the Bible.  If you don’t see repentance written throughout the Bible then I’m not sure what Bible you are reading!   You  are putting forward a world that repentance is not possible.

This is not at all what disciples of Christ teach and is by no means what has been promoted on this website.

What has been said on this site is that it is impossible for man on their own initiative to repent.  This post will show this clearly from the Scriptures.  Repentance is indeed a necessary part of salvation which is not a mystery that is veiled from carnal eyes.   What is at issue is the origins or the causation  of  that repentance.  The truth is God is the one working all aspects of salvation and man has absolutely not say so in it or its timing.   Very challenging to our carnal minds to truly believe that we like Jesus can do absolutely nothing on our own initiative.

 John 5:30  I can of mine own self do nothing

Repentance is most certainly in the list of things that man cannot do on his own initiative    Yet it is a very simple  truth that  without repentance it is impossible to enter into the kingdom of GOD:

Matthew 3:2-3 (John the Baptist coming) and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying: “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Prepare the way of the LORD;

In order to understand repentance we need to first accept that these words are actually true ;

Psa 119:160  The entirety of Your word is truth

Ephesians 1:11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of him who works ALL THINGS after the counsel of his own will:

If one cannot truly accept that it is GOD who IS  in control of every second of our lives than it will do you no good to continue to read this post.    If one accepts the Scripture such as Ephesians 1:11 and others like it,  then you are obliged to accept that HE also will have to work our repentance according to HIS will because all things in GOD’S economy means ALL THINGS.

Here are the things we must accept in order to even begin to Repent:

Psalm 139:16 Thine eyes did see mine unformed substance; And in thy book they were all written, Even the days that were ordained for me , When as yet there was none of them.

This speaks not only to the number of days but all that will take place on those days.   God has declared the end from the beginning and He will bring it to pass without exception.  If Psalm 139:16 is true (and it is) that all our days were written and ordained for us than it is true also that our repentance was also written. therefore;

1 John 3:20  Even if we feel guilty, God is greater than our feelings, and he knows everything.

The God I serve is not at all surprised or confused by my shortcomings because not only did He make me and devise a plan for my life but also said this:

Job 14:5 Man’s days are determined; you have decreed the number of his months and have set limits he cannot exceed.

No man can exceed all that has been determined because it has been written and here is what GOD tells us about what has been written;

Malachi 3:6  For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore you sons of Jacob are not consumed.

Knowing the unchanging nature of God leads us to consider these powerful words of truth.

Matthew 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.

So every word that has been written in GOD’S book for our lives we will have to live them out.   What happens and the order and sequence of things has all been determined in advance by an Almighty God for which nothing is impossible.  Look around you… look at every one who is in much worse shape than you financially or spiritually they too are living their written words because;

Acts 10:34
Then Peter said, “Now I understand that God doesn’t play favorites.

Every night when you lay your head on the pillow knowing that you have lived every word of GOD is the only way you will find peace and not feel guilty here is why we feel guilty;

Luke 22:31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat.”

Satan cannot just come against us unless he is directed by the Lord to do so.  Once Satan does his work and makes us sin, Satan then goes back to God and accuses us and this is where our guilty conscience comes in.  This can be readily seen in the story of JOB, who is a type for God’s Elect and God bringing judgment against us through the destroyer HE created for this very purpose.

JOB 1:6-12 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them.

7 And the Lord said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

8 And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?

9 Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?

10 Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.

11 But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.

12 And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord

But through judgment,  God will humble us and we will learn righteousness and salvation will come.

Revelation 12:10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brothers is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.

but if CHRIST is indeed living in you, you will not fall victim to his tricks;

2 Corinthians 2:11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

because the word of GOD tells us that;

1 John 4:4 Ye are of God, my little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world.

GOD indeed is no respecter of persons remember it was GOD who sent CHRIST to be tempted by satan;

Young’s Literal Translation
Matthew 4:1 Then Jesus was led up to the wilderness by the Spirit, to be tempted by the Devil,

but is why CHRIST tells us these words;

John 16:33 These things I have spoken to you, that in me you might have peace. In the world you shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

If indeed you have come to understand all that has been written so far than the rest will certainly make sense to you. and so let us begin the study;

How Do We Repent

2 Tim 2:25-26if God perhaps WILL GRANT them repentance, so that they may know the truth, and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.

Act 5:31 Him God has exalted to His right hand to be Prince and Savior, TO GIVE repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.

Act 11:18 When they heard these things they became silent; and they glorified God, saying, “Then God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life.

Man repents only and  because we are granted and given repentance not because our flesh desires to repent on it’s own.  It is right there in clear words.  Because if you reading this now did not know this before you will know it now;

Rom 2:4  Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?

Hence the word GOODNESS;

chréstotés: goodness, excellence, uprightness

Original Word: χρηστότης, τητος,
Short Definition: goodness, benignity, kindness
5544 /xrēstótēs (“useful kindness”) refers to meeting real needs, in God’s way, in His timing (fashion). Hence 5544 (xrēstótēs) is listed as a fruit of the Holy Spirit (Gal 5:22). With the believer,

metanoia: change of mind, repentance

Original Word: μετάνοια, ας,
Part of Speech: Noun, Feminine
Transliteration: metanoia
Phonetic Spelling: (met-an’-oy-ah)
Short Definition: repentance, a change of mindDefinition: repentance, a change of mind, change in the inner man Cognate: 3341 metánoia – literally, “a change of mind” (“afterthought“); repentance.
See 3340 /metanoeō (“repent”)

Ezekiel 36:26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.

leb: inner man, mind, will, heart

Original Word: לֵב
Part of Speech: Noun Masculine
Transliteration: leb
Phonetic Spelling: (labe)
Short Definition: heart

Is Repentance Necessary For Salvation:

2 Corinthians 7:10 For having sorrow in a godly way results in repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regrets. But the sorrow of the world produces death.

Everyone talks about Repentance and repentance and have no clue that there are two different kinds of sorrows.  One leads to repentance and the other one to destruction.

Here is the difference if you can see it and we will use the example of lust, but it applies to all sin and things that defile:

MAT 5:27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’

 There are tons of people who are not committing adultery but how many of us have not committed adultery for fear of being caught and on the flip side, how many have committed adultery for years but when they were caught (chiefly those in the public eye) are quick to offer a so called candid apology to the public but within self still wish never were caught, so therefore the lust to fornicate is still deeply penetrated within their souls.

 See when this things happen folks are not sorry of having committed adultery or whatever one is caught doing because the same unrighteous act has been going on for years but folks are sorry cause they were caught and so what does a little jail time or embarrassment causes ….? A WHOLE LOT!

Because after released from jail, find a new job or in the adultery example make up with the wife  nothing has really changed.  When the wife begins to trust a bit after the adultery is exposed, the perpetrator becomes smarter, more careful and equips self with new and more effective strategies which guarantee they will not be caught and therefore this kind of sorrow leads to continued sin which leads to death.

So all the crying in public may have fooled the blind but it will not fool the saints because we shall know them by their fruit.

 Therefore all the repenting folks talk about is carnal because godly repentance can only come from GOD.   Godly repentance is the repentance that will make sure that before you even commit the act again you have already been convicted and chastised in your heart.  With Godly repentance one will repent right there and then and will therefore not commit the physical sin.

Here is how CHRIST describes it best:

MAT 5:28 But I say to you that any one who looks at a woman with lust, has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Has any one ever looked at a woman or man with lust…?Oh  I am sure many haven’t …right? Yea okay. This however had to of dis-inflated this disciples overly righteous and big ego folks so much that they to end up saying at one point;

Mark 10:26 And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, Who then can be saved?

And of course CHRIST as always had the answer and so HE tells us still today that:

Mark 10:27 And Jesus looking on them said, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.

All things are possible with God and this includes granting of repentance in one’s heart.  GOD is the only one who can lead us to Godly repentance.

Rom 2:4  Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?

Where in this scripture does it say that we can repent on our own will or own initiative?  It does not.  The Scriptures say everything to the contrary it says that our flesh is the enemy of GOD so our flesh instead of repenting for doing wrong, it will do the opposite, our flesh thrives on doing wrong.

GOD is the only one who can make us turn (repent) from looking at women with lust or man with lust and therefore heal us. Our flesh cannot repent of anything.  It can do nothing on its own initiative except to do what it was created to do which is to sin.

 We cannot think up things to repent about. all sincere repentance come from GOD because it cannot come from us because our flesh is weak and hates the things of GOD.

And here is how it is done, the spiritual surgery :

Ezekiel 36:26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.

Ezekiel 36:27 I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.

I need to make it clear that here where it says that GOD will give us a heart of flesh is simply for the purpose of contrasting it with the heart of stone. A new heart.

No one is born with an actual heart of stone right…? but we are all born with hardened hearts.  As far as a new Spirit well why…? because here is from who spirit we are first:

John 8:44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Are this words for someone else…? NO! These words are for you who is reading the Scriptures put forth! We all live by every word of GOD. We are all first children of the devil whether we agree or not but at an appointed time here is whose child we become when given the new Spirit;

Romans 8:15 For you have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but you have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

Galatians 4:6 And because ye are sons, God sent forth the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

And is why Apostle Paul tells us this great mystery:

Colossians 1:27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

Once we are revealed this mystery we with Apostle Paul through the Holy spirit can say:

Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ lives in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith OF the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

We have no FAITH unless CHRIST comes and live in us through HIS word. It is only than that we gain HIS FAITH and is why we are told this:

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

and once again why;

Ephesians 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

But GOD had the whole thing planned out and international version says it best look;

Ephesians 2:13 For we are God’s masterpiece, created in the Messiah Jesus to do good works that God prepared long ago to be our way of life.

I would like to also touch a bit on the wrath of GOD who it has come up on.

Psa 78:31 The wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, and smote down the chosen men of Israel.

Is come upon the spiritual chosen and so we with Jeremiah say;

Lam 3:1 I AM the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath.

And here is what happens

Lam 1:21 They have heard that I sigh: there is none to comfort me: all mine enemies have heard of my trouble; they are glad that thou hast done it: thou wilt bring the day that thou hast called, (THE DAY OF WRATH) and they shall be like unto me.
Lam 1:22 Let all their wickedness come before thee; and do unto them, [affliction by the rod of his wrath!] as thou hast done unto me for all my transgressions: for my sighs are many, and my heart is faint.

Psa 78:62 He gave his people over also unto the sword; and was wroth with his inheritance.
Psa 78:63 The fire consumed their young men; and their maidens were not given to marriage.

 Who is his inheritance again? Paul tells us that “the riches of the glory of his inheritance is in the saints,

 Eph 1:18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,

Because of our unrighteousness and the Spirit of old Adam in us all by nature, GOD in his fiery wrath carried us ALL away into Babylon; this is part of the “ongoing revelation of the wrath of GOD in our lives;”

Ezra 5:12 But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven unto wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon.

 In spiritual Babylon, where we are held captive for 70 symbolic years, we try to keep the Law of Moses and try to be perfect upon the earth, and offer burnt offerings and sacrifices according to the Law. (i.e. tithing, keeping Holy Days, etc.). In doing this, we aim to be as Job, “perfect and upright, and one that feared GOD and eschewed evil.” [Job 1:1] In the same way, we try to be as Paul before Damascus, having our “own righteousness, which is of the law“.  But as Paul learned, such righteousness is dung.

Phi 3:9 And be found in him, NOT having my own righteousness, which is of the law, BUT that which is through the faith of CHRIST, the righteousness which is of GOD by faith:

We really truly are clothed and covered in garments of salvation by FAITH,  which is a gift given to few in this life.

It is my sincere hope that all reading this will come to appreciate the vast importance of repentance in our salvation.  But it is equally important that we understand repentance just like all aspects of salvation is the work of the Lord. It is not the work of man.  We can see a stark reminder of this in the words of the Lord when He explained about why He spoke in parables and hid the meaning of His words.

Mat 13:13  Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.

 Mat 13:14  And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says: ‘HEARING YOU WILL HEAR AND SHALL NOT UNDERSTAND, AND SEEING YOU WILL SEE AND NOT PERCEIVE;

All happens in the appointed time.  God is working all things for the counsel of His will.

Eph 1:11  In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will

He is the grantor of salvation and He is also the grantor of repentance.  It is all HIM 100%.  There is NO “YOU” involved.  All is the work of God in the appointed time.

Eze 36:26  I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

Eze 36:27  I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.

Eze 36:28  Then you shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; you shall be My people, and I will be your God.

It is only AFTER God does all of these things,  that then we shall dwell in the land of promise.  This is the heavenly Jerusalem which of course is inside of us just as Jesus said.

Luke 17:20-21  The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

God turns His chosen people through judgment.  It is thru His judgments that the whole earth will learn righteousness in the appointed times.

ISA 26:9  For when Your judgments are in the earth, The inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.

 Salvation and every step of it is all the work of the Lord,  even repentance.  This is what God will have to show you and He will in due season.  We will end this post with a few verses that contain this hidden mystery of God and how He brings His people to salvation through HIS judgments.  When this happens or begins to happen to you,  then you will know He is the Lord.

Isaiah 1:24-26  Therefore the Lord says,
The Lord of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel,
“Ah, I will rid Myself of My adversaries,
And take vengeance on My enemies.
25 I will turn My hand against you,
And thoroughly purge away your dross,
And take away all your alloy.

The Lord and our Father God get their will done in the end.  The will of God is that no man should perish but all will come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9).  It will be done in its appointed times.  All enemies will be destroyed, not in an eternal hell, but by the power of God (GRACE) turning the hearts of all people back to Himself.

Psa 66:3  Say to God, “How awesome are Your works! Through the greatness of Your power Your enemies shall submit themselves to You.

Psa 66:4  All the earth shall worship You and sing praises to You; They shall sing praises to Your name.” Selah

Those who turn or repent will turn from transgression.  God will be sure to burn out all that which defile out of a man who has been so blessed,  chosen and granted this gift of repentance unto life.

Isa 48:10 Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.

Isa 59:20  “The Redeemer will come to Zion, And to those who turn from transgression in Jacob,” Says the LORD.

Isa 59:21  “As for Me,” says the LORD, “this is My covenant with them: My Spirit who is upon you, and My words which I have put in your mouth, shall not depart from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your descendants, nor from the mouth of your descendants’ descendants,” says the LORD, “from this time and forevermore.”

God will put His words into our mouths and that is what we shall joyfully proclaim even amongst great opposition.  That is a promise and is part of the testing and trial of our new found faith given by the Lord.

Salvation is of the Lord,  all HIS doing.  He will grant repentance to men unto life.

ACTS 11:18  When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

 Disciples will preach these truths among great opposition.  God will use these times to teach us gentleness and humility and patience as we strive and pray that they would be granted the repentance and come to know the truth.

 2 Tim 2:24-25  And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient,  in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth,

May God open eyes and ears to see and to hear this truth.

Jonah 2:9  Salvation is of the LORD!
